Miss Elizabeth Cummings was born in the town of Lyman, Newhampshire on the 14th of May, 1797. In the year 1834 she moved to Erie county, Penn., and on the 4th of March, 1835, she and James Duncan were united in marriage. They had two children, one died in infancy and the other, Mrs. B. G. Cummings, survives her mother. Mr. Duncan's death occurred 23 years ago, April third 1867. He had been a soldier in the war of 1812. Mrs. Duncan moved to Lowell Mass. in 1841 on account of poor health, remaining there four years, after which she returned to Erie county Penn. In 1853 she moved to Carroll county, Ill, where she lived 3 years and then moved to Grundy county Iowa, which was her home for 26 years. In 1883 she came to Dakota with her daughter, Mrs. B. G. Cummings. Mrs. Duncan was one of a family of 14 children, of which only two younger brothers survive her. She was a member of the congregational church before coming to Dakota but had not united with any church since living here. She was a constant reader of the Bible until her eyesight failed about 2 years ago. In 1881 she met with an accident dislocating her hip, since which she has not walked, but has often expressed a wish that she might be relieved from these bodily ailments and go where sorrow and afflictions never enter. Thus one who had lived to a good old age passed quietly away to her reward proving that all must sooner or later tread that unknown road to our God.
