Mr. Allyn was born in Wellington, Wayne county, Ohio, studied law and was admitted to practice at Cleveland. During the war, Mr. Allyn served for a short time in the 11th Regiment of Kansas Infantry, and came to Dakota in March 1881. In May, 1882, Mr. Allyn filed a homestead in section 27 township 106 range 66 of this county being the first settler in the township as well as the first to die there. When the post office was established at Crow Lake Mr. Allyn was appointed postmaster which position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Allyn left a wife and eight children, to whom he had been a kind husband and indulgent father, and a large circle of friends who will ever cherish his memory in faithful trust. His remains were taken to Oberlin Ohio, for interrment.
