Wessington Springs Herald, May 2, 1884
Mr. Lawton, the father of the five persons who died of diphtheria in 108-66
recently, died on Sunday last. The mother and only surviving child are in a
deplorable condition. The neighbors of the suffering family have done all that
could be done under the circumstances. A young man by the name of Beels has been
staying with the family during their sickness and at times has been their only
attendant. Too much cannot be said in praise of the heroic conduct of this young
man who has stood by this afflicted family so long a time, without expectation
of reward or recompense of any kind, and who is himself sick with the disease.
The county commissioners have provided a building for the unfortunates but they
were too sick to be moved.
