Mr. Gray was born in Cedar County, Iowa, September, 28th, 1844. His father died when he was 12 years old. His mother still lives aged 76. He has one brother in Kansas. He came to Dakota the last of May 1882, and thus he begun his work with the early settlers of this county. He was a worthy, industrious man, one of strict justice, and good sense. When the county was organized in 1883 he was appointed as justice of the peace. He was afterward elected assessor of the county, holding the last till his death. He filled the office with strict integrity, and honor bothto himself and the county. He leaves an afflicted wife and seven children to mourn his loss. His death is a loss to the community, who sympathize with the family.
