He graduated from the Alleghany College with the class of 1879, and wished to enter the profession of his father, Doctor James Kughler, but through the latters advice he abandoned the idea, and in 1882 came to Cherokee, Cherokee county, Iowa, where he settled upon a farm. In the spring of 1883 he sold out there and started for Dakota. When at Pipestone, Minnesota, by an unfortunate speculation, he lost about $2,000.00. From thence he came to Wessington Springs Jerauld county. He did teaming during the summer and in the meantime filed on a piece of land. He was unmarried and lived a lonely life on a claim. He was an industrious, hard working young man, honest and frugal; honored and respected by all who knew him. On the morning of the 12th of January 1888, he went with his ox team to the straw pile about 40 rods south of his house to get a load of straw. The storm came on and he was forced to leave his wagon and seek shelter. The oxen would not face the storm but turned and fled with the wind. In his anxiety to care for his beasts, Charlie lost all thought of personal safety, until too late. After wandering about, some seven miles they all perished undoubtedly by suffocation from the fine, flour-like snow, as their faces were entirely covered and their nostrils filled. After the finding of the body it was brought to Wessington Springs and cared for by Messrs Spears, Hackett and Sturges. His father Dr. James Kughler arrived here on Friday, in response to a telegram, and started back Monday, with the body, for his home in Sharon Pennsylvania.
