Madson Phillips Bee April 11, 1940 Mrs. Bertha K. Madson, highly esteemed resident of the town of Kennan, passed away at her farm home there Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m. following a short illness. Her death was caused from a cerebral hemorrhage. At the time of her demise Mrs. Madson had attained the age of 75 years, 1 month and 15 days. Bertha Anderson Lein was born in Vallers, Norway, Feb. 19, 1865, and she came to the United States in 1881. In November of 1884 at Oldham, S.D. she was married to Martin I. Madson, and in 1904 the family moved to the town of Kennan, where Mrs. Madson resided until her death. Her husband passed away June 15, 1910. During the many years spent in the Kennan-Catawba community Mrs. Madson became very well known and was highly respected by all her acquaintances. She was a devoted member of the Lutheran Church of Catawba for many years. Mrs. Madson had been making her home on the farm of her two youngest sons, Melvin and Harold. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Grimsrud of Ladysmith, were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Catawba Lutheran Church, and internment was made in the Catawba cemetery. The services were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. surviving relatives include the following members of her family--Edward, Mrs. Hilda Hitzler, Mrs. Melva Netland, Mrs. Edna Pierrard, all of Catawba; Mrs. Minnie Clark, Tomahawk; Mrs. Mabel Peterson, Ingram, Mrs. Ida Pierrard, Melvin and Harold, Kennan. She also has one sister, Mrs. Oliana Hanson, and a brother, Andrew H. Lee, both of Lake Preston, S.D. There are also 24 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
