Madison, Lake CO., SD - 1888 Methodist CHurch Records This information is from "Palmer's Directory of the Methodist Episcopal Church for Dakota Conference - 1888" by Rev. John G. Palmer. Pages 133, 135 Information transcribed by Joy Fisher, sdgenweb@yahoo.com Madison Old Madison, together with Madison Circuit, was first served by Rev. C. W. Batchelder, who was appointed October 1, 1877. His successor, Rev. W. B. Hastings, came to the field September 30, 1878. Rev. G. R. Oake, who was appointed to Dell Rapids October 26, 1880, served portions of this circuit for a few weeks, and then for a period of several months Madison proper was without preaching. Rev. G. W. Kliver came to the circuit February 20, 1882. Rev. D. L. Johnson, appointed to Dell Rapids and Lake County in the fall of 1882, came to the circuit May 11, 1883, and supplied it till October 15, 1883. Rev. J. W. Bell then followed and remained one year. Rev. A. F. Thompson followed, and during his term superintended the building of the Madison M. E. Church. Rev. J. K. Shiffer, a transfer from Upper Iowa Conference, succeeded Rev. Thompson, and served one year. He was appointed for a second year, but in view of much illness in his family he returned to Iowa, and this charge was left without a pastor from the fall of 1886 till the last of February, 1887, at which time Rev. C. D. Cone was sent to supply this work. At the last session of the Conference Rev. C. E. Hager was appointed to Madison. In consequence of its being the location of the Territorial Normal School, it is one of our important fields, and we cannot afford, as a church, to overlook the fact. Those who are to go forth from the halls of this institution should be favorably impressed with our beloved Methodism. That Rev. Hager will meet the need is quite evident. Already he has witnessed an increase of 14 in the membership of the church since Conference, and the people have made a large addition to the parsonage building. The charge now stands as a station, and proposes to meet all apportionments. Trustees - Dr. S. W. Jacobs, F. R. Vanslyke, Dr. W. E. Daniels, J. T. Johnson, J. H. Roberts, Dr. E. L. Clark, E. B.
