Location of the Homestake mine, the largest low grade gold producer in the world, with a monthly pay roll of $200,000. Lead has a modern gas plant, electric light plant, paved and macadamized streets, ten miles of sewer, only three tier railroad bridges in the world, a $1,025,000 water plant, well equipped hospital, free library and reading rooms, free kindergarten, nine churches, eight school buildings, two broad-guage railroad lines, over a million and a half deposited in banks, school assembly hall, seating 800; well equipped school gymnasium, 60 by 80 feet; over a quarter of a million invested in school buildings. Annual school expenditures, $60,000.00; teachers annual payroll of over $37.000.00. Lead has the reputation ofbeing the best ordered and best built mining town in the world. Population 10,000.
