(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. HIRAM BARSE, who has a fine farm of 360 acres in section 30, Germantown township, Turner county, came to the territory of Dakota in 18S0, at which time he bought the farm where he now resides. His land is all under cultivation, and he devotes his time to general farming, at which he has been very successful. Mr. Barse is a native of Herkimer county, N. Y. He was born October 26, 1824, and is a son of George and Catherine (Wollaver) Barse. The former was born in New York, in 1800, and by occupation was a farmer and stonemason. He died in Cattaraugus county, N. Y., aged seventy-six years. Mrs. Barse was born in New York of German descent, and died in her native state, aged eighty-two years. Hiram was the second child of a family of eight children, and was reared in his native place. Coming west in 1852, he located at Osceola, Wis., in the lumber region, working in the woods in winter and on the rivers in summer. Later on he took up rafting and steam-boating on the Mississippi river, which he followed as a business for thirty years, fifteen years of which time he was captain of the boat. Then he came to Turner county, Dak. Ter., as stated above. Mr. Barse was married in 1876 to Catherine Mace, a native of Germany, who came to America with her parents when but four years of age. They have no children. Mr. Barse is a staunch Republican in his political views, and is also a member of the Masonic fraternity.
