(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. HJALMAR HOLMGREN, A. M., M. D. In a state as large as South Dakota, where the medical profession is represented by so many men of theoretical knowledge and practical skill, it would be hard indeed to determine who stands in the front rank. It will not be disputed, however, that Dr. Holmgren has a high standing as physician and surgeon, not only among the people, but among his medical brethren; and although he has been a resident of Canton but a comparatively short time, he has become well known throughout the state, western Minnesota, Nebraska and a large part of Iowa, as a skillful operator and an honest and painstaking medical practitioner. Dr. Holmgren was born in Stockholm, Sweden, February 21, 1864, and was reared in his native country, where he was afforded many advantages for a liberal education. His father, Hjalmar Holmgren, Ph. D., was at one time a member of the cabinet of Sweden. He was a professor of mathematics at the Royal university for over forty years, and died in Stockholm in 1885. Our subject’s paternal grandfather, Andreas Holmgren, was chaplain of the court, and lived to be ninety years of age. Hjalmar Holmgren, Jr., possessed many of the excellent traits of character which marked the popular life of his father. He became a student early in life, and when but fifteen years old received the degree of bachelor of arts, at eighteen the degree of master of arts, and after that studied medicine and made several trips to various institutions of learning of Europe in scientific research and discovery. After his arrival in the United States, in 1890, he took a course of study in the Beaumont Hospital Medical college, of St. Louis, from which he graduated with the highest honors, standing No. 1 in the class of ‘91. The Doctor then located in Ishpeming, Mich., and began the practice of his profession, continuing there until 1893, when the iron mines were temporarily closed. That year he located at Alcester, Union Co., S. Dak., but only remained there a short time prior to his coming to Canton, where he was called by the surrounding people, who founded a hospital to better facilitate his work in caring for the sick. Dr. Holmgren has been actively engaged since 1895 in the Canton hospital, of which he is surgeon-in-chief, and a few words regarding this institution will doubtless be of interest to our readers. The Canton hospital is an organization incorporated under the laws of the state, capitalized at $5,000, and opened its doors to the suffering in February, 1895. Although its existence has been of short duration, its success thus far has been remarkable. Up to July 1, 1896, 108 surgical cases had been treated, besides numerous cases of less importance; during this time but three deaths occurred, and but one of those was the result of a surgical operation. The institution has become quite famous, and patients from various parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin have been successfully treated for different complaints. It is well conducted and ably managed, and open to all physicians and patients without regard to nationality or creed. A portrait of the Doctor will be noticed on another page of this Record.
