Ernst A. E. Petzel, Ph. D., was born in Koenigsberg, Prussia, July 12, 1867. As a
child he was very fond of books, and at the early age of seven read the works of
Lessing, Goethe and Schiller. At the age of ten he came to America, and two years
later, after being confirmed in the German Lutheran church, he went to the seminary
at Addison, Ill., where he became interested in the science and art of teaching
through Prof. Krauss, a graduate of Leipzig university, and determined to fit
himself for this profession.

At about seventeen years of age he entered the University of Watertown, Wis., where
he pursued a classical course of study. After graduating with honors he went to
Europe and entered the University of Berlin to pursue his favorite studies of
philosophy, philology and literature. While here, through the merit of one of his
written productions, “The Creation of the World According to Homer,” he was
appointed honorary member of the Philosophical society of Berlin, Germany. From
Berlin he was appointed principal and to the professorship of philosophy and
literature at Detroit Female college. His vacations were spent in attending a
post-graduatecourse at Harvard university. In the summer of 1895 the University of
Illinois conferred upon him the degree of Ph. D. His leisure time as student and
teacher has been devoted to literary pursuits. He accepted a call to Augustana
college in the fall of 1894, as professor of German and literature.
