She died Tuesday,Feb.11,1997,at the Sturgis Long Term Care Center.A memorial has been established to the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. She was born Feb.14,1901 at Central City,Colo.,to Richard Sherman and Nellie (Thompson) Harvey.The family moved to Boulder,Colo.,in 1916.She attended preparatory school and the University of Colorado where she received a Bachelor of Arts and Education degree in 1924.She taught English,Latin, Spanish and history in secondary schools in Colorado and at Sturgis High School until 1931.on Jan.19,1931,she married Clarence Johnson at Denver,Colo. They lived on the Johnson family ranch in Bear Butte Valley until moving to Sturgis in 1982. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church,the Order of the Eastern Star,and had been active in many community organizations including AAUW,Black Hills Art Association,and the Women'slierary Club. Survivors include three daughter,Virginia Nesbitt,Chico,Calif.,Gail Sudman and Eleanor Coddington,both Rapid City;10 grandchildren;and eight great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and a granddaughter.
