  American Horse. A chief of the Oglala Sioux. After breaking Red Cloud of his
chieftainship in 1882, Dr. McGillicuddy made American Horse chief of the Smoke
band, that is of the band of Old Smoke, made famous in Parkman's "Oregon Trail."
His father, of the same name, was killed in the Battle of Slim Buttes.
