S. Army, 1808; Colonel, 1813; transferred to 6th Infantry, 1815; Brigadier General, 1820; in 1823 commanded Dept. of the Missouri with headquarters at St. Louis; visited the Dakota country at head of Trade and Intercourse Treaty Commission, 1825; made treaties with all the Dakota bands and the Arickara.
