So far as is now known the aboriginal inhabitants of South Dakota were various tribes of Indians of the Caddoan, Shoshonie and Siouan groups. The known tribes were Arickara, Comanche, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Omaha, Ponca and possibly Iowa. These will be treated under their tribal names. There is evidence that this region has been inhabited for many centuries.
