The academy has not flourished in South Dakota for the reason that public high schools supply the educational facilities formerly offered by academies. The Catholics, Congregationalists and Presbyterians have at times maintained independent academies, some of which still prosper and will be treated under their respective names. Academies were formerly maintained in connection with the several denominational colleges, but have been abandoned in recent years.
