As will be observed from the catalogue of ferns and flowering plants, several members of the apple family are indigenous to the State. There has been no extensive planting of apple orchards, although fair success has been secured from such trees as have been planted and cultivated with care. There is an annual production of about 250,000 bushels. The life of apple trees here seems limited to about 25 years. In 1878 Mr. L. A. Alderman, of Hurley, planted a quarter section of land near that place to apples, which soon came into bearing and for about twenty years thereafter were very profitable. The success has been chiefly with summer and autumn varieties. For some unexplained reason winter varieties produce a crop that matures for autumn use. Conditions in the Black Hills are more favorable than upon the prairies and there is some commercial orcharding there to meet local demands.
