(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. PETER N. AGGERGAARD, the largest individual land owner of Turner county and one of the most extensive live-stock dealers in this section of-the country, has his residence in section 17 of Daneville township. He was born in Denmark, January 11, 1844, and reared on a farm in his native place until he had attained the age of sixteen years, when he left home and started out in the battle of life for himself. He worked for a while on the railroad in Denmark, receiving the munificient salary of sixty cents per day, and later went to Austria-Hungary where he secured employment at the same work. There, however, he received much better remuneration for his services, his monthly salary being equivalent to about $80 in this country. He was foreman for an old Englishman, and during the seven years he remained in his employment our subject saved his money, and when he had accumulated $9,000 he sailed for America. This was in 1870, and he immediately commenced in his old line of business, taking a contract for grading the extension of one of the Chicago & Northwestern railroad’s branches in Wisconsin. He also worked on a railroad in Minnesota, and in 1873 for two months worked on a steamboat on the Mississippi river. In June of that year he arrived in Turner county, Dak. Ter., and pre-empted the half section of land whereon he now lives. This property he improved, and as he prospered he invested his savings in other tracts of land, until now his possessions foot up between 5,000 and 6,000 acres in Yankton, Clay and Turner counties. Much of his property he rents out, cultivating only about 1,500 acres himself. Mr. Aggergaard, as stated above, is also a very extensive live-stock raiser, and now has about 500 head of cattle on his farm. He does all his own shipping, most of his stock going to Chicago, and is without doubt one of the largest stock dealers in this section of the country. The estimable lady who so graciously presides over the household affairs of our subject, became his wife May 11, 1888. She was formerly Miss Elesena Nelson, and, like her husband, is a native of Denmark. To them have been born a family of seven bright, interesting little children, on whom have been bestowed the following names, viz.: Arthur, Anna, Larse, Mary, Downey, Francea and Peter. Mr. Aggergaard politically affiliates with the Republican party. He is one of the early settlers of the county and his marvelous success in the prosecution of the various enterprises with which he has connected himself is the result of sound and mature judgment combined with natural business acumen, which he possesses in a large degree. He has applied himself diligently to his own interests, carefully considering the advisability of every transaction to which he is a party, and as a result of this unstinted use of his faculties and the courage to act on his judgment to the last letter, his success has been assured.
