A. Ogle & Co. (1897) H. K. DIPPING, the amiable and popular proprietor of the Hotel Wentworth at Parker, was born in Prussia, Germany, December 19, 1858. When he had reached the age of seven years his parents left the fatherland for America. The father died on the voyage across the Atlantic and the sorrowing mother and family were left to continue their journey alone. They landed at New York and went direct to Allamakee county, Iowa, and there the mother too succumbed and passed to her reward beyond the dark river. At that time our subject was but ten years of age and he remained with his brother-in-law until thirteen years old; in the meantime his sister died and young Dipping went to Minneapolis to work in a flouring mill. His first occupation was as a sweeper, then he was given the care of the purifiers and later was promoted to the position of grinder. Finishing the milling trade he came to Sanborn county, Dak. Ter., in 1887 and bought a grist mill which he carried on for two years, then sold out and went to Washington territory. From the northwest he came to Parker, Dak. Ter., and engaged in the hotel business, first renting his present location which he bought in 1896. He conducts a first-class hostelry in every respect and in connection with same runs a livery for the accommodation of his guests. Mr. Dipping was married September 11, 1887, to Miss Lena Ziegelmier, a native of Winneshiek county, Iowa. Politically he supports the principles interpreted by the Republican party and strongly adheres to them. He belongs to the Masonic fraternity at Parker, of which he was at one time reasurer, [sic] and to the M. W. A. order of the same place.
