(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. GUS GILBERT, the enterprising proprietor of the clothing store at Parker, Turner county, is a native of Norway and was born fifty years ago. When he was seventeen years of age he emigrated to America and went direct to Lansing, Iowa, where he engaged as clerk in a general store. Five years later he removed to Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and started a store for himself. He conducted a general merchandise store there until spring of 1875, when he located at Swan Lake, Turner Co., Dak. Ter., and established a general store at that point. In 1879 he moved his stock of goods to Parker, and about 1891 closed out the business and became manager of the South Dakota Echo, a local newspaper. He remained at newspaper work for a year and then engaged in the clothing business, which he has continued ever since. In connection with his clothing business he also conducts a fine farm of 300 acres in Turner county. Mr. Gilbert has held various public offices in the county. In 1888 he was elected county treasurer, has been a member of the school board and was also a city councilman when the town of Parker was incorporated. Mr. Gilbert was married March 25, 1868, to Miss Carrie Eggen, a native of Norway and a daughter of Jens Eggen. This union has been blessed with one son, Julius C. V., who assists in his father’s store. Mr. Gilbert is a free-silver Republican politically, and socially is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Master Mason degree, Royal Arch, Knights Templar and Shriner and I. O. O. F., in all of which he is actively interested.
