(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. JOHN D. HEEREN, ex-county treasurer and postmaster of the town of Chancellor, Turner county, where he has a general store, is a native of Stephenson county. Ill., and was born December 16, 1857. He is a son of Jelle and Tillie (Parks) Heeren, both of whom came to America when quite young. They still reside on the farm that Mr. Heeren located on in Stephenson county when he came to this country fifty years ago. They were the parents of twelve children, five sons and seven daughters, ten of whom are living. John D. is the fifth child in order of their birth, and spent his boyhood days in his native place, where he attended the common schools of the district for an education and helped his father on the farm. He remained at home till he was married, February 23, 1882, to Christina Akkerman, also a native of Stephenson county, born December 30, 1859. Mr. and Mrs. Heeren after their marriage came to Turner county, Dak. Ter., and located in section 9, Germantown township, where he purchased a farm of 320 acres for which he paid $2,800. He engaged in farming until 1892, when he was elected treasurer of Turner county and moved to Parker. In the spring of 1894, the town of Chancellor was located, and in August, 1895, Mr. Heeren opened the first store and was appointed postmaster of the place. He at present owns 490 acres of land, one quarter of which is in Parker township, and all of this he rents. Mr. Heeren was a director in the Finlay school township, which included Germantown and Parker townships, is local agent for the Chancellor town site, and agent of the United States Express company there. He and his wife are the parents of ten children, viz.: Matilda J., deceased; Annabelle, John, Elmer, Arthur, May, Myrtle and Mable, twins, James and Alfred L.
