(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. ANDREW J. JOHNSEN, a well-to-do, prominent and enterprising farmer and old settler of Turner county, in section 4 of Daneville township, of which he is carrying on extensive farming operations, is a native of Denmark, and was born April 21,1840. He 1 was reared in his native place, and at the age of sixteen years began an apprenticeship at the tailor's trade. This trade he followed up to 1869, as a means of livelihood, with the exception of two years, which were spent in the Danish army, and when he was twenty-nine years old he started for America. After landing in this country he went direct to Winnebago county, Wis., and a couple years later came to Dakota territory and rented a farm in Clay county. This latter he operated for a period of five years, at the expiration of which time he homesteaded and settled on the farm where he now lives. That was in 1877 and he has since constantly resided thereon. His present landed possessions consist of 720 acres of as good land as can be found in Turner county, and on this he has erected some first-class buildings, among which is a fine dwelling, which was built in 1 894, at a cost of about $1,500.00. He does a general farming business, and beside this is treasurer of the Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance company, which position he has held for the past eleven years. He has been closely identified with local matters of interest and was one of the organizers of Daneville township, as supervisor and road-overseer of which he has served at various times with credit. He now holds the office of township treasurer. Politically he is a stanch Republican of the straightest type, and religiously is a member of the Lutheran church. The marriage of Mr. Johnsen and Miss Anna Jorgensen was celebrated December 8, 1870. Mrs. Johnsen, like her husband, is a native of Denmark, and first saw the light January 14, 1837. She grew to womanhood in the land of her birth, and came to America the year of her marriage with Mr. Johnsen. To this congenial union have been born six children, viz.: George H., who married Mathilda Melgaard, resides in Spring Valley township; Mary I. is the wife of Oman Sorrensen, and also lives in Spring Valley township; Hans Peter, Martin, and Carl A are at home, and Christina is deceased.
