(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. JAMES LOUGHRAN, well-known as an old settler, and one of Turner county’s skillful, practical and successful farmers, in section 34, Daneville township, of which he makes his residence, is a native of Ireland, born near the city of Dungannen, county Tyrone, August 12, 1845. He was reared in his native place until he had attained his majority, on a farm, and, in 1867, left the downtrodden country of his birth and came to the land of the free. On arrival he located in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia on a farm, where he worked by the month until 1869, and that year came west to Iowa. In Jackson county, of the latter state, he remained until 1874, when he located in Turner county, Dak. Ter., and homesteaded 160 acres, a part of his present farm. To this tract he has added as his circumstances would permit, until now his landed possessions aggregate 800 acres, and all of this he operates himself with the exception of a quarter section. Mr. Loughran came to this country a poor man, having but half a guinea in his pocket when he landed in Mew York city. For seven years he worked at farm labor, and then began his career in Dakota territory, in a sod house 14 x 20 feet. His present dwelling, which was erected in 1893 at a cost of $2,000, is a fine house, and the farm is further embelished by good, substantial barns and out-buildings, making it a model estate in every respect, and one that reflects credit on the thrift and enterprise of the owner. Mr. Loughran was married December 2, 1873, to Miss Catherine Ryan, a native of Jackson county, Iowa, and a daughter of William and Margaret (Leonard) Ryan, both of whom were born in Ireland. Mrs. Loughran was born February 15, 1S45, and by her marriage to our subject they have become the parents of nine children, but five of whom survive. The living are: Mary, the wife of Thomas King, of Yankton county; Margaret, Bernard, Ellen and John, the latter four being still at home. The deceased are: William, Hugh, Michael and William. The family are members of the Catholic church. Mr. Loughran is a Democrat politically, and a strong supporter of the party’s principles. He has served as a member of the school board, and during his residence here has made many friends by his honest habits and straightforward manner in all his dealings with his fellow men.
