A. Ogle & Co. (1897) ZEB STOUT, the popular ex-sheriff of Turner county, was born in Kildare, Ireland, August 1, 1853. He is a son of James P. and Mary (Creig) Stout, both natives of the Emerald Isle. The former was a blacksmith by trade and emigrated to America when our subject was but six years of age, locating on a farm in Grant county, Wis., where he died in 1862. His aged wife still resides in Hurley, ninety-three years old. They were the parents of eleven children, our subject being the ninth child in order of their birth. Zeb was reared in Wisconsin where he grew to maturity, and was employed as foreman in the lead mines located in Grant county. There also he was married in March, 1871, to Miss Alice Narse, a native of Wisconsin, and a daughter of Monroe and Nora (Alderman) Narse. Immediately after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Stout came to Turner county, Dak. Ter., and located in Childs township, where he homesteaded 160 acres. They lived on this property, proved up and then sold out, buying a farm in Swan Lake township, where they made their home from 1877 till 1892, when he was elected sheriff of Turner county and removed to the village of Parker. In 1894 he was re-elected to the same position, serving in all four years. He has also been chairman of the school board of Hurley township for six years, and is a member of Parker lodge No. 98, I. O. O. F., and the Masonic fraternity lodge of the same place. In politics Mr. Stout is a Republican of the stanchest variety and strongly supports that party's principles. Mr. and Mrs. Stout have two children, Millie and Jesse. Additional Comments: Extracted from: MEMORIAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF Turner, Lincoln, Union and Clay Counties, SOUTH DAKOTA.
