Page 104 - 106 Information transcribed by Joy Fisher, http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00001.html#0000031 Hurley In 1880 Rev. C. W. Batchelder had charge of the work in Turner county. He organized classes at various points and began the work of building a church edifice at Swan Lake, which was then the county seat of Turner county. Rev. L. W. Miller followed in having charge of Parker, Swan Lake and Lennox. During this yeat the church was completed at Swan Lake, the church costing $600. In 1882 Rev. C. P. Stiles was pastor for Centerville, Swan Lake and Hurley. In 1884 Rev. F. A. Burdick, while pastor for Parker, preached for six months in Hurley, and organized the first class with ten members. About six weeks before the session of 1885 Rev. Morey Clyde was sent to take charge of the work at Hurley, and at the conference of 1885 Hurley appears in the list of appointments, supplied by Rev. I. A. Sparks. In 1886 Rev. M. Clyde again became pastor. The church edifice at this time was out alone upon the prairie, at the site of the deserted town of Swan Lake. The C. & N. W. R'y having built through the country and made its station at Hurley, the people of Swan Lake had moved thither. It was now determined to remove the church, and Rev. Clyde became one of the laborers in this undertaking. In this work he injured his thumb, which gave him no uneasiness at the time, as it seemed to quickly heal. Soon after it strangely swelled, became very painful, and caused blood poisoning. About Christmas time Rev. Clyde started to Tankton to consult a surgeon, reached Centerville where he was to change cars, and remarked to a friend that he thought he would wait for the next train. His friends have not seen him since, and the mystery of his disappearance is as great as ever. Rev. I. A. Sparks returned from school at Mitchell and filled out the balance of the year with acceptability. In 1887 Rev. T. Carson was appointed to this work, but was removed after a few weeks at his own request. Rev. Thomas Alcock is supplying the work for this year. At present there are 55 members and 3 probationers.
