Melvin Hammond Stringer, proprietor. Melvin and his wife Nettie (Hannah Amorette Perry) are landlords. They, and their children, Susie Pearl (b. 1880 in Elgin, Kane, IL) and Melvin Whitford (b. 1876 in Elgin, Kane, IL) are listed on the 1885 South Dakota Territorial Census. Also listed are several employees and numerous boarders. Susie Pearl may be the young girl in the picture. The proprietorship must have been short-lived, between 1881 and 1886, as Susie Pearl was born in 1880 in Elgin, Kane, IL, and her younger brother, Harry, was also born in Elgin in 1886. The reverse of the picture reads: "Parker House, M.H. Stringer, Prop.; Parker, Dak." Melvin Hammon Stringer and Nettie are my Great-Great Grandparents. I can find no other listing for a boarding house of this nature in the other census reports. There is, however, a record in the Parker 1909 Business Directory (South Dakota State Business Directory) of H.J. Still being the proprietor of Parker House. Whether this is the same Parker House is still a mystery. Additional Comments: I would love to have any other information about this location.
