DAVID REMILLARD, well known as one of the older settlers of Union county, who has
successfully applied himself to farming in section 34, Civil Bend township, is a
native of eastern Canada, and was born in 1842. He mastered the elementary branches
of learning in his native country, and in 1855 emigrated to Dubuque, Iowa, where he
found employment till August, 1862, when he came to Union county.

Mr. Remillard was one of four or five settlers who were the only inhabitants of this
section of the territory, and he passed through all the discouragements and
vicissitudes incident to the development of a new country. He has lived here during
the Indian troubles with Little Crow, lost his crops, like other farmers when the
grasshoppers were so troublesome, and has seen three overflows of the Missouri
river; but, notwithstanding all these discouragements, he has prospered and now has
the homestead of 160 acres, which he entered when he arrived in Union county, all
improved, and owns 160 acres more in Lake county, S. Dak.

Mr. Remillard was married to Miss Dinese Jandreu, a native of Canada, whose father,
Noel Jandreu, now resides in Elk Point. They have thirteen children, eleven of whom
are living, viz.: Mrs. Mary McKiel, Louis C., Patrick A., Nicholas, Mrs. Odeil
Morrison, Mrs. Emma Steinbrook, Joseph, George, Fred, Cora and Paul. The family are
members of the Catholic church. Mr. Remillard has been a member of the school board
and politically is a Republican.
