(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. JACOB SCHUCK is a good type of the self-made men who have risen by their own exertions to a state of affluence. He is the proprietor of one of the fine farms of Prairie township, Union county, lying in section 14, and here he is carrying oil a good business as a general farmer. Mr. Shuck is a native of Scott county, Iowa, and a son of George and Mary (Van Duser), Shuck who were early settlers in the Hawkeye state, coming there when the now thriving city of Davenport was a hamlet. The father died some years ago and Mrs. Shuck remarried and is still residing in Scott county, Iowa. By her first marriage she was the mother of two sons, our subject and John Milton, the latter now operating a farm in Adair count)-, Iowa. Our subject was born June 2, 1845, and was raised in his native county, where he also acquired his education. He remained a member of the paternal home until he became twenty years of age, giving his father valuable assistance on the farm and incidentally gaining a thorough knowledge of all matters pertaining to agriculture.' In 1868 he contracted a matrimonial alliance with the estimable lady who has for over a quarter of a century shared his joys and sorrows. This lady is also a native of Scott county, Iowa, and a daughter of Samuel Moore and wife, who both came originally from Ireland. Mr. Moore died in the Hawkeye state but his widow still survives, making her home with her daughter and son-in-law, the subject of this biography. Mrs. Shuck's given name was Maria, and by her union with Mr. Shuck has become the mother of ten children, nine of whom are living, viz.: May, the wife of Benjamin Payne, of Union county, has three children; George, Charles, Nettie, Bert, Perry, Inez, Harry and Carl. Mr. and Mrs. Shuck after their marriage rented a farm in Iowa on which they made their home until 1885, coming that year to their present location in Union county, Dak. Ter. The farm they settled on was but roughly improved and took a good deal of hard work to bring it to its present condition. It consists of 320 acres in all, and 225 acres are under cultivation. Mr. Shuck is exclusively a farmer and has been quite successful in his pursuit of agriculture, at which he has always been engaged. When he started out for himself he had absolutely nothing; but by faithful and persevering efforts he has succeeded and his property, which is adorned by a nice, comfortable residence, barns, cribs, etc., all of his own building, testifies to his persistent energy and enterprise. He has been a member of the school board, and in this connection it may be said that he is giving his children good educations, believing that “knowledge is power.” Politically he uses his right of suffrage in the support of the candidates of the Republican party.
