Page 106-107 Information transcribed by Joy Fisher, sdgenweb@yahoo.com Elk Point Elk Point charge is among the oldest in Dakota. Preaching services were held in this vicinity as early as the year 1864, and possibly earlier. The charge was permanently organized in January, 1867, by Rev. Almon Gore. The class at that time consisted of 22 members and probationers, Benj. Briggs being the leader. The first Methodist preacher who passed through Elk Point was Rev. Septimus Ingham. This was October 12, 1860. At that time the town had one or two inferior log cabins with dirt roofs, and two other buildings of better grade were then being constructed. The first person to be baptized by "our office and ministry" at Elk Point were Preston Hotchkiss, Sally Hotchkiss, Lycurgus H. Collins, Charlotte Collins and Jane Collins, in August, 1867, the ceremony being performed by Rev. A. Gore. The first marriage ceremony, solemnized by a Methodist minister, took place February 5, 1867, Rev. Gore officiating. The contracting parties were Lorenzo Wood and Fannie C. LeGro. The first work done on this charge, was by Rev. E. C. Collins, a local preacher. The following ministers of our church have labored in Elk Point and vicinity: Revs. Almon Gore, Ira Brashears, T. McKendree Stuart, W. McKendree Cain, Fred Harris, O. S. Bryan, W. F. Gleason, B. W. Gorham, A. T. Mattison, S. T. Moon, Wm. McCready, Seymour Snyder, Miltiades Miller, G. R. Oake, Lewis Bradford, Duane Rifenbark. The church edifice, which is worth about $500, was built by Rev. Fred Harris, and the parsonage, which is worth $650, was built by Rev. Wm. McCready.
