Obituary index for BERESFORD NEWS, Vol. 17, 1899 The following is an index of obituaries which were published in the "Beresford News" in the year 1899. The paper was weekly and was published every Thursday. This index covers issues 38 and 41 of Volume 17, published in the year 1899. These are the only copies of pre-1904 issues of the "Beresford News" that are known to have survived. Any information not listed in the fields below was not provided in the original obituaries. Beresford's first newspaper, the "Beresford News," was founded by John Rathburn Carleton. At age ten, John became a printer's apprentice in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. From that point on, John's life was spent as either a printer or a publisher. After serving during the Civil War, John married Louise Wass, and moved to New Hampton, Iowa in July 1877 to take charge of the "New Hampton Courier." In July 1883, John sold his half interest in that paper and moved to Beresford, Dakota Territory, where he founded the "Beresford News." The first issue was reported to have been published on August 30, 1883. Mr. Carleton was reported to have served as the first postmaster of the newly-established Beresford post office until eventually turning that job over to Thomas Brady. Despite years of debilitating pain and illness, John Carleton continued work on the paper as editor until a week before his death at age 59, which occurred on January 5, 1900. His paper, the "Beresford News," continued to be published weekly until the mid 1920's. The last issue archived was dated December 30, 1926. Most of this information came from John Carleton's obituary, published January 11, 1900 in the "Beresford Republic." In 1899, Beresford, SD had a second weekly newspaper called "Beresford Republic," also published every Thursday. It is worth noting that both papers often published different obituaries for the same individuals. And, the obituary from one paper sometimes contained information that was absent in the obituary from the other newspaper. However, the following index was compiled only from data found in the "Beresford News." Some married women were listed only listed by their husbands names. In those cases, the husband's name is listed in the first name field inside [ ]. During the time period when the 1899 "News" issues were published, some death notices were not published as formal obituaries. The "Beresford News" contained various news items and a column called "In the Public Eye." The ITEM field indicates the area where the death notice appeared. "Pub" refers to the column, "In the Public Eye." "Other" refers to some other form of article in the paper besides "In the Public Eye" or a formal obituary. As a rule, less formal death notices tended to lack any detailed biographical data on the individual. Therefore, formal obituaries for individuals were indexed here whenever possible; but when none were available, the less formal notices were indexed instead. Some misspellings may have come from the original published obituaries. And, a few death notices may have been missed when this index was compiled; since, some were not formal obituaries and were therefore more difficult to locate within the paper due to lack of headlines or titles. This index was compiled by Brian M. Hass. The author of this index does not keep an archive of the obituaries listed.
