Mr. Stoddard was born in Middletown, Rutland County, Vt., and there grew up to manhood. On mMay 8th, 1848, he was united in marriage to Sarah Frisbie, and to them was born six children, two sons W H and K B Stoddard, who now reside near Hurley, Turner County, the four daughter being Mrs. H P Flannagan of Sioux Falls, Mrs. D B Wilcox and Mrs. J M Clementson of Richland, Union County, and Mrs. C E Swoyer, of Clay County. Up to the time of his death the family circle had not been broken, but la grippe claimed its victim after a very short and sudden illness. The funeral services were conducted at the family residence by Rev. G D Cleworth and the remains were given a resting place in the beautiful Vermillion cemetery. Vermont was the home of Mr. Stoddard until the spring of 1865, when he moved direct to the then territory of Dakota and settled on Brule Creek, in Union county and right here might be added that of the fourteen pioneers who formed the American settlement on Brule Cree in 1865, ten are now known to be dead. In the fall of 1889 he moved to Vermillion and remained there until he died. All of the children were present a tht efuneral. Mr. Stoddard, though feeble in appearance was very active and his death was a surprise. He was a good citizen and will be missed by all with whom he was connected in any way.
