The term applied to sediment transported by rivers and spread over submerged lowlands. This alluvium forms exceedingly fertile flood-plains bordering rivers. Along the Missouri, James and Sioux Rivers, as well as many other streams, there are vast areas of such fertile soil, usually sub-irrigated and adapted to all cultivated crops and meadows, especially to alfalfa.
