THE ARNOLD FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF THE SOUTH _________________________________________________________________________________ “Family Trails” from the Unpublished Newsletters 1979-1983 Part Three _________________________________________________________________________________ Volume XI (December 1980) Zachariah Arnold of Lincoln County, Tennessee 2 (Virginia to Georgia to Tennessee) Nicholas Arnold of Bourbon County, Kentucky ` 12 Other Arnold Families Found in Clay County, Missouri 18 Thomas and Grace Arnold of King George County, Virginia 21 Volume XI (December 1980) Some of our members have made exciting progress in their Arnold research in the past year. Our “Family Trails” will detail two of these and we will initiate a study of the family of Thomas Arnold and his wife, Grace. Zachariah Arnold of Lincoln County, Tennessee (Virginia to Georgia to Tennessee) Clifford L. Arnold, AFAS Member #45, joined our Association in our first year. At that time he had followed the trail of his line back to Moses Arnold (b ca 1815) of Lincoln Co. Tenn. Later, he learned that Moses was son of Zachariah Arnold of Lincoln Co. He was in doubt that Zachariah Arnold of Lincoln Co. was the same man who had earlier been in Oglethorpe Co., Ga. (son of Thomas of Cumberland and Prince Edward Counties, Virginia), and could not find the proof he needed of this. Finally, in February, 1980, he compiled his records as completely as he could and sent revised charts and Family Group Sheets to us. In July of 1980, Mrs. Helen Johnson became a member of the AFAS (#301) and she supplied some of the missing links which Clifford had despaired of finding. Mrs. Johnson’s husband and children are descended from Zachariah Arnold through Zachariah’s daughter, Malinda. They also have the Bostick line – the same family of Bosticks which were associated with Arnolds in Goochland (later Cumberland) County, Virginia as early as 1736, later were in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, and associated with Arnolds there, and then in Lincoln County, Tennessee. It is always fascinating to see the same family connections all along a Family Trail. On the next few pages we present some records which have been found on the line of Zachariah Arnold. William Arnold, grandfather of Zachariah, received a grant of 400 acres from William Gooch on 17 March 1736. This land lay on both sides of Tan Wallet Run in Goochland County (in that -2- part which later became Cumberland County, Va.). The description mentions “John Bostick’s line near the west side of Tan Waller Run.” On 16 June 1740, William Arnold deposed in Goochland County, Virginia, regarding the will of William Bostick which William and his wife, Elizabeth, had witnessed on 30 Dec 1739. In his deposition, William Arnold gave his age as 40. (See AFAS Vol. VII, p 61). The Will of William Arnold of Cumberland County was dated 16 Sept 1774, probated 28 Nov 1774 (see AFAS Vol. VII, p 45). In his will he bequeathed land to 3 sons, Moses, William, and Thomas. He also had a son, Henry. Thomas Arnold, son of William, is mentioned in several records of Prince Edward County, Virginia (see AFAS Vol. VII, Prince Edward Co., Va records). He moved to Georgia where, on April 16, 1793, he wrote his will in which he was “of co. of Wilkes.” This will was probated 29 June 1796 in Oglethorpe Co., Ga. (See AFAS Vol. II, p 193). In this will, Thomas named his wife, Mary, and 3 eldest sons, one of whom was Zachariah. Zachariah Arnold, who was son of Thomas Arnold, was mentioned in several records of Prince Edward County, Virginia. One record is the marriage of Zachariah Arnold to Nancy Beasley. In AFAS Vol. VII, p 125, we find the marriage bond of Zachariah Arnold to Nancy Beasley, dated 4 Dec 1784. The book, “Marriage Bonds and Ministers’ Returns of Prince Edward Co., Va., 1754-1810” states this marriage took place in February, 1785. According to Mrs. Johnson’s records, one daughter was born to this union, Mary “Polly” Arnold, born 9 May 1785. We assume Nancy Beasley Arnold died about this time or shortly thereafter. Zachariah Arnold married (2) Charlotte Tarver on 6 February 1787, according to the Family Bible. This marriage probably took place in Georgia, for in a Prince Edward County, Virginia, records we find “Zacharias” Arnold mentioned as being “of the State of Georgia in Wilks(sic) County” on 6 Dec 1785. (AFAS Vol. VII, p 124) The following abstracts of deeds of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, are contributed by Ted. O. Brooke: Oglethorpe Co., Ga., Deed Book B, p 182 Instituted 10 May 1796; Recorded (no date given) Grantor: John and Elizabeth Tarver of Oglethorpe Co., Ga. Grantee: Zachariah Arnold of Oglethorpe Co., Ga. Description: $500 paid for 137 acres on waters of Dry Fork of Long Creek, bounded by John Tarver, Radford Ellis and Robert Jennings. Witnesses: John Gibson, JP Signed: Jno. Tarver, E. Tarver Oglethorpe Co., Ga., Deed Book L, p 193 Instituted: 13 Dec 1798; Recorded 10 Nov 1824 Grantor: John Tarver of Wilkes Co., Ga. Grantee: Zachariah Arnold of Oglethorpe Co., Ga. -3- Description: $300 paid for 105 acres in Oglethorpe Co. on waters of Dry Fork of Long Creek “joining the lands where the said Arnold now lives, granted to said John Tarver 9 Feb 1790.” Bounded by “Tarver’s other land.” Witnesses: Richard Tarver, John Gibson, JP Signed: J. Tarver, E. Tarver No relationship is indicated in these deeds but note the first one was instituted 10 May 1796; Zachariah had married Charlotte Tarver in 1787. Without a doubt, John and Elizabeth Tarver were closely related to Charlotte Tarver and it is possible they were her parents. From the “Early Records of Georgia,” Vols I and II by Davidson, Ted O. Brooke sends information from the Will of John Tarver: Will Book “HH” (1810-1816), p 48 Will of John Tarver … wife Elizabeth and my six children, Richard Tarver, Patience Gibson, Moses, Charlotte, Benjamin, and Andrew Tarver. Signed 20 Apr 1808; probated 7 Jan 1811 Note he did not use a married name for his daughter, Charlotte; we do not know if this was the Charlotte Tarver who had married Zachariah Arnold nearly 20 years previously, or of this was a younger Charlotte Tarver. Zachariah Arnold was listed in the 1800 Census of Oglethorpe Co., Ga. in Capt. McElroy’s district. Mrs. Johnson has contributed the enumeration, with her comments in parentheses: 1800 Census, Oglethorpe Co. Ga. Capt. McElroy’s district: Zach Arnold – 2 m under 10 (John, Moses); 1 m 26-45 (Zachariah); 1 f under 10 (Patsy); 1 f 10-16 (Mary “Polly”); 1 f 26-45 (Charlotte); 7 slaves. We don’t know just when Zachariah and Charlotte (Tarver) Arnold moved to Lincoln Co., Tenn. Mrs. Johnson lists all the children as having been born in Georgia, through 1810. So, the move must have been between 1810 and 1820. She sends the 1820 Census of Lincoln Co., Tenn, p 41: Zachariah Arnold – 1 m 10-16 (Sanders Walker); 1 m 45+ (Zachariah); 3 f 10-16 (Nancy, Malinda, Malissa); 1 f 45+ (Charlotte); 11 slaves The 1830 Census of Lincoln Co., Tenn., p 270 (contributed by Mrs. Johnson with her notes in parentheses) shows: Zachariah Arnold – 1 m under 5 (perhaps son of Sanders W.); 1 m 20-30 (perhaps Sanders Walker Arnold); 1 m 60-70 (Zachariah); 1 f 20-30 (perhaps wife of Sanders W.); 1 f 50-60 (Charlotte). -4- Perhaps the most exciting (and certainly among the most important and helpful) record which Mrs. Johnson sent is copies of the Family Record from the Family Bible of Zachariah and Charlotte Arnold. This Bible is in the possession of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Curtis Walker, Kelso, Tenn. (The record from this Bible has been published in “Lincoln County, Tenn., Bible Records” Vol. 5, compiled by Mabel Abbott Tucker and Jane Warren Waller, and published by Lincoln County Tennessee Pioneers, by Mrs. Jane Warren Waller.) The front and back pages of this Bible are gone, and there are many loose pages. Zachariah Arnold died on 11 Oct 1835 (typo?) (according to the Family Bible) and his will was recorded 4 Dec 1834, (according to a note at the bottom of said will). His widow, Charlotte, was listed in the 1840 Census of Lincoln Co., Tenn., age 70-80 (See AFAS Vol. II, p 250). With her was a female age 20-30. He was retired 19 Oct 1864 but during the time he was in the Army (Company H, 1st Tenn. Reg. Inft. CSA), he was a prisoner of war for almost a year and contracted small pox, which left scars that he covered by growing a beard. His left elbow was shattered and was set so that he could feed himself or hold a plow. He married (2) on 6 June 1865 to Mary Mandana Stubblefield (born ca 1841). They had 8 children. He moved his family from Tennessee to Missouri in 1884. He farmed east of Thayer, Mo., and had a small store for a time. At the age of approximately 45, Thomas P. Arnold married (3) Winnie Foster (born 1858) who was approximately 23. They had 4 children, two of whom died in infancy. Thomas Porter Arnold died at the age of 81 on 3 Nov 1916, and is buried at Areytown Cemetery, Thayer (Oregon Co.) Missouri. Clifford Arnold descends from Arthur Cyrus Arnold, a son by the second marriage. NICHOLAS ARNOLD OF BOURBON COUNTY, KENTUCKY T. J. Beach, AFAS Member #166, has recently returned from Kentucky where he examined records, still trying to find the parents of his Samuel Arnold who married Tabitha Noel. There -12- are many questions yet unanswered about his line but he has written the following account, using the information which he has, to date, on Nicholas Arnold and his descendants. According to a DAR lineage chart dated March 23, 1951, Nicholas Arnold was born in Wales about 1734. He married a woman by the name of Margaret (surname unknown); and they lived in Culpeper County, Virginia, until they moved to Kentucky before 1788. At that time he signed a petition for the separation of Fayette County. His first wife died about 1790 and he married Sarah Champ on 23 May 1793 in Bourbon County. This is also proven by deeds made by Nicholas Arnold, recorded in Woodford, Harrison and Bourbon Counties in Kentucky. The earliest deed mentions his wife, Margaret, and other deeds in 1794 in Woodford and in 1796 in Harrison give his wife as Sarah. In 1794, Nicholas and Sarah Arnold of Bourbon Co., purchased 600 acres of land on Russells Creek in Green County from Thomas Mosby, of Woodford Co., who was acting for Alexander McRoberts of Virginia. In 1796, Nicholas and Sarah sold 300 acres of land on Gray’s Run, a branch of the South Fork of the Licking, to Samuel Nexbutt. This was land that Nicholas had received from Lewis Craig. Nicholas Arnold is listed on a tablet in Paris, Kentucky, which gives the Revolutionary soldiers buried in Bourbon County. He received pay for Revolutionary services, as shown in the Auditor’s Accounts (folio 204) for 1779. The DAR reference lists the following children: 1. John, born 10 January 1754, who married Elizabeth Hitt, a daughter of Petter Hitt II. 2. James, born about 1756. 3. Thomas, who married Susan Pryor Taylor and was born 3 Jan 1770. 4. Elisha. On the same record, Lewis Arnold was not listed, but he was a son, as proven by the pension papers of John Arnold, who says that his brother, Lewis, marched off to war and never returned. John’s wife, Elizabeth, says that her husband’s brother, Lewis, came to Kentucky the year before they came. This was from an interview in the Draper Collection. Information on the children of John and Elizabeth Arnold is well known, but little is known of the children of James, Thomas, Lewis or Elisha Arnold. There may have also been other children. In 1783, Nicholas Arnold signed a bond for the marriage of Sarah Arnold and John Hiett in Orange Co., Va.. She may be a daughter. Nicholas Arnold received a land grant from the State of Kentucky. The grant consisted of 400 acres on Townsend Creek in Bourbon County. The survey is dated 10 October 1797 (Survey No. 4,864 in KHS Vol. No. 22). The grantee is listed as Robert Champ Arnold and Heirs, dated 13 March 1801. Samuel Arnold who married Tabitha Noel paid taxes on 50 acres of unimproved land in Burbon Co., Townsend Creek, in 1802 while he was living in Garrard Co. This would indicate that he was probably a son or grandson of Nicholas Arnold. Nicholas Arnold died in Bourbon County about 1808 according to the above DAR record. -13- I. John Arnold was born 10 January 1754 in Virginia and he died 4 May 1818 in Woodford County, Kentucky. He married 29 August 1775 to Elizabeth Hiett (Hitt) in Fauquier Co., Va. She was born 12 March 1751 in Fauquier and died about 1848 in Woodford County, Ky. His will is in Will Book F, p 41, and it lists his 10 children. He and his wife came to Kentucky in 1781 with the traveling church of Rev. Lewis Craig. They were in the siege of Bryan’s Station in Fayette County before moving on to Craig’s Fort in Woodford County. 1. Lewis Arnold was born about 1780 in Virginia. He was born about 1799 and she was born about 1802. This is probably the Thomas Arnold who married Martha Arnold 10 Sept 1823 in Woodford Co. He is listed as Thomas Arnold, Jr., and the bondsman was James Arnold. Martha or Jenny may be the daughter of James Arnold, brother of John, wife, Elizabeth. i. John Arnold born about 1829. ii. OTHER ARNOLD FAMILIES FOUND IN CLAY COUNTY, MISSOURI There were at least two other Arnold families living in Clay County, Missouri, who do not seem to fit into the John and Elizabeth (Hitt) Arnold family, at least not from the known sources of Arnold materials. The other possibility for their parentage, if they do not belong in this family, is for them to be the sons or grandsons of James Arnold, brother of John. According to a sketch of Lewis S. Arnold, he moved to Clay Co. from Garrard Co., Ky. This is the same county that Samuel Arnold lived before he moved to Boone Co, Ky. According to a descendant of Samuel Arnold, this family is related to the Arnold families in Clay County. The following information -18- comes from the census of Clay County, Mo., as well as the sketches of William B. Arnold and Franklin G. Arnold, found in the “History of Clay and Platte Counties in Missouri, 1885.” I. Lewis S. Arnold was born about 1805 in Kentucky and married Arabella Arnold on 28 Apr 1827 in Woodford Co. He moved to Clay Co., Mo. about 1831. After his death, his widow married Rev. William Warren, a Baptist minister. Lewis S. moved to Clay Co., Mo. from Garrard Co., Ky. He went west and died in the Rocky Mountain area. He might be the son of John Arnold, who died in Logan Co., Ky. before 1825. At that time, Tillman (Tilghman) Offutt of Woodford Co. was appointed guardian of the orphans of John. He was also the executor of the estate of John Arnold of Logan Co. This is the second John Arnold who died in Logan with estate in Will Book C. His son was Lewis S. 1. John Arnold was born about 1830. He was living in Clay Co. in 1880 and his wife was named Ruth. 2. William B. Arnold was born in Apr 1833 and married Cleopatra Ann Hart. This couple had 5 children, but only 3 lived to be adults. They lived near Kearney, Clay Co., Mo. (Note: In 1900 Census they are listed as having been married 27 years and she states she has not given birth to any children. Did William have another wife?) A. Alice Arnold was born in 1867 and married Homer Davis. B. Claude Arnold was born about 1872. 3. Henry C. Arnold was born in 1836 and his wife is listed as Frances in the 1880 census. They also lived in the Kearney Township of Clay Co. Mo. (2 houses away from William B.) A. Eugene Arnold born about 1859. B. Flora Arnold born about 1860. C. Mary Arnold born about 1864. D. Nannie Arnold born about 1865. E. Gertrude Arnold born about 1870. F. Fanny Arnold born about 1879. -19- 4. Lucy Arnold married William Grooms. 5. Mary E. Arnold married Henry Shaver. II. Fauntleroy Arnold was born about 1807 in Kentucky. He died in Clay Co., Mo. in 1857. He married 12 May 1828, in Woodford Co., Ky, Alvira Carter of Fayette Co. Ky. He moved to Clay County about 1830. His wife was born about 1812. In 1848, when the will of Lewis Arnold was recorded in Woodford Co., Ky, it mentioned a David Hayden as the guardian for a John, Ann, and Fauntleroy Arnold. That Fauntleroy Arnold would be too young for the one found in Clay Co. Mo. 1. Bradford Arnold born about 1831 2. William H. Arnold was born 25 Jul 1832 in Clay Co. Mo. He lived in Harrison and Clinton Counties in Missouri. In the 1880 census he is found living in Liberty, Clay County. He married Mary Jane Browner of Jessamine Co., Ky. She was born in 1832. A. Charles F. D. Arnold is listed as a school teacher in the 1880 census. He later became a Baptist minister who served churches in Clay, Clinton, and Platte Counties in Missouri. B. Franklin Grimes Arnold was born 24 Feb 1859 and married Mary Jane Holt on 14 Nov 1883. She was born in Clinton Co. Mo. i. C. L. F. Arnold ii. Franklin J. Arnold iii. J. T. Arnold iv. W. J. Arnold v. J. M. Arnold C. John T. Arnold born about 1861. D. Willie Jane Arnold was born about 1863 and married S. B. Wilhoit. E. James M. Arnold born about 1866. I can not find a Fauntleroy Arnold in the family of John, wife Elizabeth Hitt, or in the family of John Arnold of Logan County. As I look at the names of this family, I notice James M., which is the name of the first circuit clerk in Bourbon County, Kentucky. The descendants of Nicholas Arnold appear to be scattered in the counties of Bourbon, Woodford, Garrard, and one perhaps in Logan (the second John Arnold to die in Logan). There are also descendants in Boone and Nicholas Counties, as well. In Missouri, it seems to be Clay and Platte Counties. -20- THE FAMILY OF THOMAS AND GRACE ARNOLD OF KING GEORGE CO., VIRGINIA A number of the members of the AFAS are tracing their Arnold line back to Thomas and Grace Arnold. In order to correct some misconceptions or wrong assumptions which have found their way into print in our pages, it has been decided that we should go back to the beginning and take a fresh approach in working out this line. An attempt will be made to examine each piece of evidence carefully, in a comprehensive analysis, avoiding as much conjecture and speculation as possible. We shall strive to base any theories (or working hypotheses) on all the tangible evidence we can find. We shall also study those men whose names were listed as neighbors, witnesses, etc., recognizing the possibility of family alliances among them. The will of Thomas Arnold has finally been made available to us, with the discovery and return of Will Book A-1, which disappeared from King George County during the Civil War. A copy of Thomas Arnold’s will (which is recorded on page 39 of Will Book A-1) was secured from the Clerk’s office of King George County, and a full transcript of it appears on page 24. The first thing we learned from the will of Thomas Arnold was that he was in his 77th year of age when he wrote it. That means he was “76, going on 77,” as we said when we were children. (How helpful it would be if everyone would indicate their age in their will!). This will was dated 27 December 1725/6, so we can estimate his birth year at circa 1649. We have no clue as to the place of his birth, nor do we know the names of his parents. (Instructions included here about changing information in AFAS Vol. IV, p 102 and Vol. VII, p 149) There are a few records of men by name of Thomas Arnold in early Virginia records and we have at times speculated as to the possibility of one of these men being “our” Thomas Arnold. Nothing we have at this time indicates that any of these were the same man. The statement on p. 149 of AFAS Vol. VII that he may have been Thos. Arnoll who was transported to Virginia in 1662 by Edward Sanders should be qualified. He would have been about 13 years old at the time. In Nugent’s book, “Cavaliers and Pioneers” Vol. II, p 181, one James Keyes, on 3 April 1678, claimed transportation of several persons including one Thomas Arnold. James Keyes received land in (Old) Rappahannock Co., Virginia, on the north side of the Rappahannock River near the mouth of Doeg’s Creek. This wasn’t too far from the area where Thomas and Grace later bought their land on the Gingoteague Creek. There was a ship Captain by the name of Thomas Arnold, of whom we find 3 references (in 1674, 1682/3, and 1690). Some have speculated that our man may have been this ship Captain, but it would seem he was a bit young for that responsibility in 1674. Besides that, he was settled in (Old) Rappahannock Co. by 1679. The first tangible evidence we have found on our Thomas Arnold bears the date 13 Jan 1679 (at which time he would have been about 30 years old). In a deed of that date, he was listed as being a resident of Sittingbourn Parish in Rappahannock County when he bought land from -21- Simon Miller. (fn) (Footnote) Simon Miller married Margaret, 2nd wife and widow of John Prosser (who died 1673-77). Simon Miller’s will in (Old) Rapp. Co., Va, pp 92-93, was dated 16 Feb 1679 (little more than a month after the date of the above deed), and was proved 5 Sep 1683. (Note: “William & Mary Quarterly”, Vol. 17 #2, p 76 – Order Book 3, Richmond Co. states Simon died 1684.) (Following from AFAS Vol. VIII, pp. 101-102) “Wills of Rappahannock County, Virginia” by Sweeney, p 55 PROSSER, JOHN, of Golden Valle in the Parish of Sittingbourne in the Freshes of Rappac County. To buried by my first wife Martha. To my wife that now is I mean my Loving wife Margarett 500 acres of land and 1/2 of my moveable Estate my debts and funeral charges being paid and if my moveable Estate will not pay my debts then soe much of my land back upon Pewmansin to be sold by her as will fully satisfy all. Leaves his sons under the protection of his wife until they come one after another to the age of Eighteene and to whome she shall think fitt to put them too and I doe hereby desire Mr. James Kay to assist my said Executrix in performing all my will and Testament and whereas I have sold some Land that as yet hath no conveyance do hereby impower my said Executor Mr. James Kay or his or her certaine attorney to give conveyance for the same and to acknowledge it to be recorded. Wit: John Waight, Hugh (X) Pallmer. 28 Aug 1673; 30 June 1677. Editor’s Comment: John B. Boddie, “Historical Southern Families” Vol. II, p 111, states, “William Goffe was the immigrant ancestor of this family, patented 1000 acres in New Kent County on 7 Oct 1658. This land was on N.E. side of the -22- Mattapony River.” This land was later assigned to John Madison (a neighbor of Anthony Arnold’s) who assigned it to Martha Goffe (wife of William Goffe). After the death of William Goffe, his widow married John Prosser, immigrant ancestor of this family. Thus we have two new ancestors, on the line of Isaac Arnold, Sr., wife, Margaret Goffe: her father, Thomas Goffe was the son of William Goffe, the immigrant and his wife, Martha. The designation “son-in-law” meant in colonial times, stepsons. Mrs. Margaret Prosser later married Simon Miller. Another deed, just 3 months later (dated 18 April 1679) shows Thomas Arnold bought land from Adam Wolfendale. Both men were listed as residents of (Old) Rappahannock Co. This land was on the south side of Gingoteak Creek (fn). This deed was recorded 3 May 1679/80, mentions Simon Miller. (Footnote) Gingoteaque Creek – several different spellings. Warner, “History of Rappahannock County, Virginia, 1656-1692”, p 169, “Old Places and Streams” states Guicotic or Guigateepe flows into the Rappahannock River on the north side about 2.5 miles below Port Conway (across from Port Royal, Caroline Co.) at the narrows just above Port Tobago Bay. We have on order several records of (Old) Rappahannock County, Virginia, including the two above-mentioned deeds and two others. We shall discuss these records more fully in a future installment. The other two deeds included in the records we have ordered are: (1) Thomas Arnold and his wife, Grace, sold land to Henry Going on 16 June 1689. From an abstract in AFAS Vol. VII, p 52, we find that this land was on the west side of the main branch of Ginateaque Creek, contained 50 acres, and was bounded by a line of Prosser. (2) A deed from Adam Wofendale to Thomas Arnold, recorded December 1679-80. The first deed, above, is the first record we have found which gives the name of Thomas Arnold’s wife, Grace. We do not know her surname, when or where she was born, when or where they married, or her parentage. We assume she was the mother of Thomas’ children. On 16 June 1689, Grace Arnold granted to “friend” Joseph Beckley (or Buckley?) Power of Attorney regarding “my thirds of tract of land sold unto Henry Going according to deed of sale made by my husband and myself.” Richmond County, Virginia, was formed in 1692 from (Old) Rappahannock County and the land on which Thomas and Grace were living was then in Richmond County. We have a copy of a deed from Richmond County which is abstracted as follows: Richmond County, Virginia, Deed Book 2, pp. 142-144 1 Mar, 1694/5; 7 Nov 1695 Adam Woffendall of Richmond Co., Planter to -23- Thomas Arnold of Richmond Co., Planter 2,000 pounds of good Tobacco and cask 100 acres of land on north side of Rappahannock River in the Freshes of said River … on the west side of a western branch of Jengateague Swamp … thence west to line of Anthony Savage, thence northeast along the said Line to the Jengateague Swamp, thence down said Swamp to the first Station … Signed by Adam Woffendall and wife, Honoria Witnesses: Christopher Edrington and James Woffendall. This was the 100 acres which Thomas Arnold left to his two sons, John and James, when he wrote his will in 1726. Each of those two sons got 50 acres. Nearly 50 years after this land was bought by Thomas Arnold, it was sold to Harry Turner by Thomas’ grandson, Weedon Arnold, and the deed states that “Aforesaid tract being purchased by Thomas Arnold of Adam Wofendale by Deed bearing date the first day of March 1694/5 which said Land was by the sd. Thomas Arnold bequeathed to the said James Arnold to whom the said Weedon Arnold is the Eldest son and heir at law.” Since we have found no record of Thomas and Grace for the 30 years interim between 1695 and 1725, we assume they lived quietly on their own plantation in that part of Richmond County which became King George County in 1720. Below, we are printing a full transcript of the will of Thomas Arnold: King George County, Virginia Will Book A-1, page 39 December the 27th 1725/6 In the Name of God Amen. I Thomas Arnold of Hanover Parish in King George County in the 77th year of my age doe make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as followeth – Ffirst I bequeath my Soul and Spirit into the hands of my heavenly Ffather by whom of his Mercy and only free Grace through the Death of my Savior Jesus Christ I Enterest to be Saved and Redeemed to eternal rest - - my reched body I commit to the Earth to be buried at such rate as my Grace my wife whom I appoint my Exekutrix wholly hereinafter named shall think fit. A brief explanation may be in order for some of the terms used in this inventory of items which were common in those days, but unknown to most of us: Drugget – fabric of wool or wool mixed with linen, used for clothing. Piggin – a wooden vessel. Cooper tools – used for making or repairing wooden casks or tubs. Tobacco was stored in casks. A cooper was a barrel-maker. Roundlet or rundlet – small barrel. Grace Arnold, widow of Thomas, probably remained on the home plantation until her death about 7 years later. On 2 March 1723/3, Administration on the estate of Grace Arnold was granted to Isaac Arnold and her estate was ordered to be appraised. Isaac Arnold furnished bond for the proper administration on her estate and Rush Hudson was his security. (King George Co. Cop: Test: T: Turner Cl Cur: Children of Thomas and Grace Arnold: Thomas Arnold’s will named two sons: James, and my youngest son John Arnold.” It may be they had other children, including daughters, but we have no conclusive evidence to that effect. In AFAS Vol. VII, at the bottom of page 149, cross out Thomas as a known son of Thomas and Grace Arnold. They may, indeed, have had a son named Thomas but we have no record of such a son. The one referred to was probably Isaac’s son. Someone wrote, “What proof do you have that Isaac was son of Thomas?” The answer is, “We have no conclusive proof, yet.” There is no doubt that Isaac was very closely related to Thomas and Grace, since (1) he witnessed Thomas’ will, (2) he administered Grace’s estate, and (3) Isaac owned land which adjoined Thomas’ land on Gingoteague Creek. Isaac said, in a deed of 1719, that this land was granted to him by Patent for 226 acres by Mr. Thomas Lee, Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia. At this time, we are working on the theory that Isaac was the eldest son of Thomas and Grace. (In AFAS Vol. IV, p 102, in the discussion of Isaac Arnold I, about the middle of the page, please cross out the words ”fourth and last child.”) In a later installment, we shall discuss children of Thomas and Grace and the land owned by Thomas and land owned by Isaac.
