He is the earliest Arnold appearing in extant colonial records over a period of time in the south, first seen as a witness in Lancaster County, Virginia, under the spelling “Anthonie Armoll” on 3 October 1654. His story, with documentation, has been told in my book, “Some Ancestors and Descendants of Benjamin Arnold of King William County, Virginia, and Greenville County, South Carolina, published 1 May 1974 by the Arnold Family Association of the South (2008 – no longer available). Additions and corrections have been noted from time to time in Annuals published since 1975. These additions and corrections will be found in the articles cited in the bibliography which follows this article. Several books augment the descendants found in my book. John A. Focht, a resident of Austin, Texas, published a book, “Descendants of David Saxon and Temperance Lucinda Arnold,” June 1960, in which he attempted to trace every descendant of this couple who are Arnold cousins. It was an effort on his part to update William Hendrick Arnold’s book, “The Arnold Family” through this particular branch. He stated “some of the descendants have been lost” (1960). Mr. Focht has graciously given The Arnold Family Association of the South permission to reprint his book in our annual. It will be published as a Family Trails article in the future (never done). Another book, “Our Kith and Kin” by Aimee Roberts Thomason (no date) carries the Thomasons and allied families further than I do in my book. Ms. Thomason repeats the old family tradition that Benjamin Arnold, who married Anne Hendricks, was son of a Philip Arnold and Anneke Jans Bogardus, though she offers no evidence whatsoever for this statement and shows in a chart on page 8 of Philip Arnold born 1726 and his wife born 1721, while she shows his purported son, Benjamin Arnold, as born 1719! The son, then, was two years old when his mother was born and seven years old when his father was born. Her book can be used for leads and clues to the earlier generations of Arnolds and Thomasons if they are checked against records where they lived (Laurens County, South Carolina, and Campbell County, Georgia) but it is felt the later generations are probably more correct as they were closer in time to Ms. Thomason. As in all printed genealogies, no lineage should ever be accepted as proof just because it has appeared in print. Every effort should be made to check each generation on the lineage against as much documentation as is extant and can be discovered. William Hendrick Arnold’s book, “The Arnold Family” (1935) should be consulted as well, keeping in mind that he was not a genealogist and that he perpetuated many errors which have come down in our family and which have proved to be romantic but not true. His book is best in describing his immediate ancestors, himself, and his descendants as well as containing some letters from distant relatives in South Carolina which describe their families. -2- Toney A. Hardy, “No Compromise With Principle” (no date), is a biography of the author’s father, William Harris Hardy, and an autobiography of Toney Hardy. It perpetuates that romantic traditions that our former member, Lucille Hendrix Beard, aptly dubbed “Same Old Stories.” This book give precise dates as far back as 1781 for some of these stories without citing any sources. William D. Sullivan’s “Register of the Sullivan Family,” January, 1882 to 1931, a handwritten manuscript on deposit at the University of South Carolina in The South Caroliniana Library, is a wonderful source of data on the Sullivan descendants who claim Benjamin Arnold II as ancestor. This book is indexed and references are made to many relatives and neighbors of the Arnolds in South Carolina. The author’s grandfather was Benjamin Arnold, Jr., son of Benjamin Arnold II. The Sullivans and Arnolds who remained in South Carolina were bound by ties of blood and friendship and Mr. Sullivan is at his best in describing these families and their children. The contents of these books, my own and those of my distant kin, described above, are fragmentary at best. As Mr. William Hendrick Arnold wrote on 15 February 1932, “it is hoped that other members of the family will take up these records … and supplement them with additional investigation.” ASSOCIATION MEMBERS WHO JOINED AND DESCEND FROM ANTHONY ARNOLD (Arnold Family Number One) (NOTE: First number relates to Association membership number.) #1 1) Hazel Judith Arnold md. Since this is one of the most prolific families in America, I am sure I did not note all of the persons who descend on this line found in our first twelve volumes of AFAS publications. I am familiar with only a few lines of descent in this family. If your research has led you to believe you are of the Anthony Arnold line, you would be well advised to search each volume personally. No records found in the pages of AFAS publications should be taken as proof of a given lineage. The searcher should procure the original record in each case.) JAMES H. ARNOLD OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY (LATER HARNETT COUNTY), NORTH CAROLINA – Contributed by Doris Nelson Introduction: When Mrs. Lloyd P. (Doris) Nelson, our member #246, joined our Association in 1978, her earliest-known Arnold ancestor was Joseph W. Arnold of Harnett County, North Carolina. Since that time, she has made two trips to North Carolina (1979 and 1980), and in May of 1980 she spent several days doing research in the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City. These trips proved very profitable in terms of genealogical leads on her Arnold family. She also visits the Clayton Genealogical Library in Houston regularly, where she has gleaned much information, particularly in the form of census records from microfilm, etc. Follow this article is -11- data which she has gathered on Arnolds in Cumberland, Moore, Harnett, and Franklin Counties, North Carolina. Thank you, Doris, for writing this article and sharing your data with us. (In a letter to the Editor, dated 2 June 1982, Doris Nelson said “she could never have done (the article) without Marian’s (Ledgerwood) help with the organization and typing.” When Doris Nelson became interested in genealogy in 1976, her mother was no longer living and she didn’t even know the names of her mother’s grandparents but she remembered hearing the State of North Carolina mentioned. In the 1880 Soundex of North Carolina, she found a Joseph W. Arnold family in Harnett County, with a daughter, Lillie V., age 13, her grandmother. She also found a Joseph Dennis family with a son, William D., age 14, her grandfather. The age of Joseph W. Arnold presents somewhat an enigma because of variance in census records. On the 1880 census, his age was at first misread as 39 (fn) so Doris searched all Arnold families listed in 1850 North Carolina Census Index until she found a John and Eliza Arnold in Franklin Co., N.C., with a son named Joseph, age 9; so she assumed this was the correct family. However, this proved incorrect as will be explained later. Also in 1850 in Cumberland Co., N.C., (from which Harnett Co. was later formed) there was listed a Jo W. Arnold, age 3, son of James and Kesada Arnold. The 1860 census of Harnett Co. shows Jas Arnold, 42, wife Kisidia, 36, with son J. W., age 12, and daughters J. F., 5, and E. E., 1 - - all born in North Carolina. In the 1900 census of McLennan Co., Texas, Joseph W. Arnold’s age is 51 and birth date May 1849. (Footnote: At a later reading of the 1880 census, it was agreed by two people that this age probably is 32.) Later Doris found a deed record in Harnett Co., N. C., (Deed Book 160, p 342), which lists Joseph W. Arnold, along with his sisters, Frances J. (Arnold) Mimms, Emma E. Johnson, and Mary A. Ausley, as heirs of James H. Arnold, deceased. James H. Arnold had married Kisada Prince in Cumberland Co., N. C., on March 14, 1847. She was the daughter of Joel Prince and Sally Johnston, who had married in Cumberland Co., N. C., Dec. 18, 1819. Joel Prince was the son of Nathan Prince. Kisada Arnold’s given name is spelled in different ways on census records and other documents (Kisada, Kesada, Kizzada, Kisidia). According to the 1880 census of Harnett Co., N. C., Joseph W. Arnold’s wife’s name was M. Frances. Her maiden name was not known and a copy of the death certificate of Lillie Virginia Arnold Dennis (their daughter) was of no help. Then, Doris found a deed record signed by all her children in 1913, selling land they had inherited through their mother, who was one of the heirs of Aaron Thomas. M. Frances Arnold’s maiden name was confirmed as being Thomas by a copy of the death certificate of Mary Etta Arnold, sister to Lillie Virginia Arnold. A very interesting fact was discovered in researching the Arnolds of Harnett Co., N. C. Four sisters, daughters of Aaron Thomas and Elizabeth Harrington, married three Arnolds. Joseph W. -12- Arnold married (1) Martha Frances Thomas (born ca. 1845, died ca. 1890), by whom he had seven children. After her death, he married (2) her sister, Nancy Elizabeth Thomas (born ca. 1846, died 1899). Annabel Thomas (born ca. 1836, died 1904) married William Arnold, and Mary Jane Thomas (born ca. 1838, died ?) married Abel S. Arnold. A local resident of the area told Doris that the Arnold men were brothers, but this proved to be untrue, as evidenced by the deed record cited earlier (Harnett Co., DB 160, p 342). Also, Doris had corresponded with Mr. Percy A. Arnold of Fuquay-Varina, N. C., whose father, J. F. Arnold,, had purchased land from the children of Joseph W. Arnold and M. Frances Arnold in 1913. Mr. Percy A. Arnold says he now owns the Aaron Thomas farm and that these Arnold men were not brothers. There is no doubt they were closely related, probably cousins or uncles and nephews. The J. F. Arnold (Percy Arnold’s father) was the son of Abel S. Arnold and Mary J. Thomas; listed as their four-year-old son in the 1880 Census of Harnett Co. (Vol. 11 Enum. Dist. 96 Sheet 18). It has been learned recently that Percy A. Arnold has sold a portion of this land to the State of North Carolina to be used as Raven Rock State Park. Aaron Thomas (father of the sisters who married Arnolds) was born in 1809, Moore Co., N. C. He died 17 Sep 1889 in Harnett Co., N. C. His parents were Frederick Thomas and Nancy Cox. (This information is from a Family Group Sheet in the LDS Archives.) His wife, Elizabeth Watts Harrington was born Jan. 1809, Robeson Co., N. C., and died in Harnett Co., N. C., in Aug. 1894. She was the daughter of Thomas Harrington (born 5 April 1779, Pittsboro, Chatham Co., N.C.; died 17 July 1852, Cumberland Co., N. C.), who was the son of Sion Harrington and Elizabeth Watts. Elizabeth Harrington’s mother was Ann Stephens (born 1787, Robeson Co., N. C.; died 1836 Cumberland Co. N.C., daughter of James Stephens and Mary Dalrymple). Elizabeth Harrington had a sister, Mary Harrington (born 22 Oct. 1821; died 1 June 1906) who married Abel Arnold, who is found in records of Cumberland Co., N. C. (This information is from a Family Group Sheet in the LDS Archives.) With the information found in the LDS Archives as a guide, Doris was able to trace her lineage back to Sion Harrington, a Revolutionary War soldier, and she received her DAR Certificate on his service. Joseph W. Arnold married Martha Frances Thomas, probably ca. 1866. Their first child, Lillie Virginia Arnold (Mrs. Nelson’s grandmother), was born 27 March 1867. The second daughter, Mary Etta, was born in Mississippi in Sept. 1870. These Arnolds returned to North Carolina before the birth of their third daughter, Elizabeth Florence, in November, 1872. The fourth child (first son) was James Aaron Arnold, born March 1876 in North Carolina. It would appear he was named for his two grandfathers, James Arnold and Aaron Thomas. Two more daughters were born to Joseph W. and Frances Arnold – Ada Marion Arnold, born Nov. 1879, and Emma Lola Arnold, born Aug. 1881. The seventh and last child was a son, Carl, born September 1883 The family of Joseph W. Arnold was missing from the 1870 census of Harnett Co. Also missing from that census is the James H. Arnold family. Since Mary Etta, second daughter of Joseph W. and Martha Frances Arnold, was born in Mississippi in Sept. 1870, according to subsequent -13- census records and her death certificate, numerous Mississippi counties have been searched in their entirety in the 1870 census but these Arnolds have not yet been found. Martha Frances (Thomas) Arnold, first wife of Joseph W. Arnold, died about 1890 in Harnett Co., N. C. As stated earlier, her husband married, second, her younger sister, Nancy Elizabeth Thomas (born ca. 1846) before 14 December 1891. On that date, Nancy E. (Thomas) Arnold wrote her will in Harnett Co., N. C., leaving her property to her husband, Joseph W. Arnold, and to his children. Nancy E. (Thomas) Arnold died on 14 January 1899 in Coryell Co., Texas. Mrs. Nelson has copies of some interesting papers which have to do with Nancy’s decease: 1) A letter having the original envelope with an 8 cent and two 1 cent stamps, postmarked Gatesville, Texas, Jan. 25, 1899, addressed to H. L. Prince in May, N. C. (H. L. Prince would have been a kinsman of Kisada Prince Arnold.) 2) The will of Nancy E. Arnold, dated Dec. 14, 1891, written on a letterhead which has, printed in the upper left-hand corner, “Office of Register of Deeds, Harnett County, Alvis C. Holloway, Registrar.” 3) An affidavit by one of the witnesses of Nancy E. Arnold’s will, which has a 10 cent Documentary Stamp and the seal of Coryell Co., Texas. It is not known when or where Joseph W. Arnold died. He may have returned to North Carolina before his death. He was dead before 2 Sep. 1913, when his children deeded the land they had inherited through their mother. All his children were living in Texas in 1913. Neither North Carolina nor Texas has been able to locate a death certificate for him. Lillie Virginia Arnold, oldest daughter of Joseph W. and Martha Frances, married William David Dennis on 12 Sep. 1889 in North Carolina. (These are Mrs. Nelson’s grandparents.) He was the son of Joseph Dennis and Dorcas Tutor (daughter of William Tutor and Telletha Powell, who married on 28 Dec. 1829, Wake Co., N. C.). Their first child, Joe Mavert Dennis, was born 26 Sep. 1891 in North Carolina. They sold their land in Harnett Co. to Andrew W. Dewar on 30 Sep. 1890, and went to Texas by wagon train, late in 1891 or 1892. (Mary Etta Arnold’s death certificate, 1910, stated she had been a resident of Texas for 19 years.) Joseph Arnold and his family also came at this time. Lillie Virginia (Arnold) Dennis died in Port Arthur, Texas, on 9 Mar. 1927, and William David Dennis died on 2 June 1942, also in Port Arthur. Joseph Dennis (father of William David Dennis) died after 1889; before 1900. Until the 1900 census was released, Doris never knew her great-grandmother, Dorcas Tutor Dennis, came to Texas. She was living in Bell Co., Texas, in 1900. She returned to Harnett Co., N. C., before her death on 23 Dec. 1928. Efforts to find William David Dennis and family in the 1900 census have been unsuccessful – Texas, Louisiana, and North Carolina have been checked. -14- Doris’ mother, Ada Blanche, the youngest child of W. D. and L. V. Dennis, was born 16 Feb. 1900 in Falls Co., Texas. Though no proof has been found, as yet, Doris feels fairly certain that the parents of James H. Arnold were William S. Arnold (born ca. 1792, N. C.) and Elizabeth Douglas (born ca. 1795, N. C.). The 1830 North Carolina Census Index shows one William S. Arnold, who was in Moore Co. on page 471. The 1840 North Carolina Census Index shows a William Arnold in Moore County on page 201. On both the 1830 and 1840 Census Records of Moore Co., William S. Arnold had a son of the proper age to be James H. Arnold. In January 1830, William S. Arnold of Moore County, N. C., bought land located in Cumberland County on the southwest side of Cape Fear River from James Northington. In June 1841, while still a resident of Moore Co., N. C., William S. Arnold bought land located in Cumberland Co. on the north side of Cape Fear River from Alexander McLennan. The family apparently moved to Cumberland Co. before 1850. The 1850 Census of Cumberland Co., N. C., shows Will S. Arnold on page 133. In his household were his wife, Elizabeth, age 55, William Arnold, age 12, and Abel Douglass, age 80 (probably he was Elizabeth’s father). James Arnold and his wife and young son are listed on page 134 (the next page from Will S. Arnold). Harnett County was formed from Cumberland County in 1855. In the 1860 census of Harnett County, W. S. Arnold (age 68) and family are shown living next to Jas Arnold (age 42) and family (page 57, lines 4 and 9). William S. Arnold died between 1860 and 1870. His widow, Elizabeth, age 76, was living with William and Ann Arnold in 1870 census of Harnett Co. (page 11). No will or probate records can be found for William S. Arnold. (The Courthouse of Harnett County suffered fires in 1892 and 1894). We do know that William S. Arnold was the son of Solomon Arnold, a Revolutionary War soldier from Moore County, whose will, probated in 1847, named his children and is recorded in Volume B, p 168, Moore County, N. C. A full transcript of his will is printed elsewhere in this issue. Solomon Arnold was born in Lunenburg Co., Virginia, in 1758. He served as a Private in the N. C. Militia. He married Mary Gurley in Warren Co., N. C., on 29 Jan. 1784. They moved to Moore Co., N. C., about 1817. He died 23 Oct. 1844 and she applied for a Widow’s Pension in 1845 (W12208). -15- The following proofs are needed in this line: that William S. Arnold was father of James H. Arnold that William S. Arnold’s wife, Elizabeth was the daughter of Abel Douglas Date and place of Joseph W. Arnold’s death OTHER ARNOLDS OF CUMBERLAND/HARNETT COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, who were probably related to Joseph W. Arnold: 1) Harwell J. Arnold, born 1800-1819, married Eliza Lanier in 1829. Silas Douglas was their bondsman. They were listed in the 1840 census with 2 sons and a daughter. Harwell was gone in 1850 and Eliza was listed on p. 134, next to James and Kisada. Eliza was age 41 (born ca. 1809) with two children and also James Brown, 26, a laborer. Children of Harwell and Eliza: a) Thomas Arnold (born ca. 1830) b) Mary E. Arnold (born ca. 1832) married Thomas R. Brown, 2 Dec. 1851. J. Brown, bondsman c) Solomon Arnold (born ca.1835) who was listed in the 1880 census of Harnett Co. as Solloman B. Arnold, on the next page from Abel Arnold. He was listed as age 45, with wife, Easter, and 2 children. Also with them was Eliza Arnold, age 73. d) Eliza C. Arnold (born ca. 1846) 2) Abel D(ouglas?) Arnold, born ca. 1816, N. C., was probably son of Will S. and Elizabeth Arnold. He married Mary Harrington. (See 1870 census, Harnett Co., N. C.) 3) William Arnold, age 12 (born ca 1838) was the only child of Will S. Arnold and Elizabeth in the 1850 census. He probably was the William Arnold, age 32, shown on p. 11 of the 1870 census. His wife as Annabel. They had four children and Elizabeth Arnold, age 76 (widow of Will S.) was with them. Also listed in the 1850 census of Cumberland Co., N. C., were some Arnold children in the household of John C. Truelove. John C. Truelove was married to Sarah J. Arnold on 31 May 1842 in Cumberland Co., but his wife (as per the 1850 census) was Mary A. (or M. A. J. in the 1860 census). In the 1850 census, they had three sons of their own, plus 1) William Arnold, age 15 (born ca 1835), N. C., laborer 2) James Arnold, age 13 (born ca. 1837) 3) Sol A. Arnold, age 10 (born ca 1840) In the 1860 census of Harnett Co., Jno. C. Truelove and wife had two sons and a daughter plus: 4) Jos Arnold, age 20 (born ca 1840) N. C. -16- At this time, nothing is known of the parentage of these Arnold children. FAMILY GROUP SHEETS – Prepared by Doris W. Nelson (1981) James H.
