This important corporation had its beginning immediately after the end of the War Between the States and later under the direction of HENRY C. ARNALL, over a period of four decades it expanded to its present large proportions and outstanding position in the manufacture of blankets sold to an international trade. Shortly after the death of the President, HENRY C. ARNALL, A. W. ARNALL became President, a position he occupied until March 15, 1936, when F. M. ARNALL became President. p. 169 ARNALL, ALTON W. – Mr. ARNALL was born in 1880, the son of H. C. ARNOLD, was a soldier in the War of 1812, serving under Andrew Jackson, was Brigadier-General of Tennessee Militia, was a member of the Tennessee Bar for over 50 years and represented the First District of Tennessee in Congress. Mr. ARNOLD’s mother was VIRGINIA LOWRY, of Tennessee. His maternal grandfather was William M. ARNALL, one of Senoia’s prominent citizens, was born in Walton County, GA, in 1839, his parents, JOHN and NANCY A. (GIBBS) ARNALL, being also natives of this state. The father, born in Butts County in 1811, was the son of WILLIAM H. ARNALL, a Virginian who came to Georgia, settling in Butts County before 1800, making the long journey thither on horseback. He was by trade a wheelwright and blacksmith, at which he worked for many years. His son JOHN settled in Coweta County in 1843, and there the younger WILLIAM grew to manhood, attending school in what was noted as a better schoolhouse than most of that time, in that the logs of which it was built were hewed, and the chimney, though of sticks and dirt, was the outlet of a fire-place extending almost across the entire end of the building. The writing-desk too, was a great improvement for those days, being made like the roof of a house, with a slope on each side so that it would accommodate pupils on both sides. It was no unusual occurrence in those days for the pupils to turn the teacher out on Christmas and make him treat. “Soon after the outbreak of the War, in July, 1861, young ARNALL enlisted in Company A, Seventh Georgia Regiment. In this company he remained until the Second Battle of Manassas, where he was wounded in the arm, on Aug. 30, and when he reached home on Sept. 20 he weighed only eighty-four pounds. As soon as he was sufficiently recovered he helped Capt. J. H. Graham recruit a cavalry company, and on Dec. 29, 1862, he returned to the front, at which time he weighed 172 pounds. In May, 1863, his wound broke out afresh and the physician told him he must lose his arm or his life; he, however, refused to submit to amputation of the suffering member, and at last, to his great joy, it healed. “He was in a number of very hard-fought battles: Yorktown, VA., the Seven Days fight at Richmond, Thoroughfare Gap, VA, and that at Manassas. He was with Bragg in his retreat from Chattanooga; was wounded again, this time in the hand, at Chickamauga, by which he was laid up about two months. But as soon as he was able he returned once more to his company, to remain with it to the end of the war. He was with Gen. Wheeler when he captured Stoneham and shared in the sufferings of those perilous times. “In common with his comrades he returned home to Coweta County after the war was done, having nothing with which to begin life, but with courage and patience he engaged in farming, in which he has prospered. In 1878 he removed to Senoia and engaged in the cotton trade, dealing also in buggies, wagons, etc., and still giving attention and care to the interests of his farm. His standing in the community is high, and he is liked and respected by all who know him. “In December, 1858, Mr. ARNALL was married to Miss FRANCES J. NORTH, born in Coweta County, January, 1840, the daughter of Abraham B. and Eliza (Holmes) North. To them were born two sons, ROBERT E. (ARNALL) and LUCIUS T. F. (ARNALL.) Mrs. ARNALL, who was a faithful member of the M. E. church, died in November, 1862. In 1865 he married MARTHA C. COUCH, daughter of Matthew and Jane (Eusley) Couch and they had four children: JANE E. (ARNALL), wife of J. T. Glover; IDELIA (ARNALL), wife of Dr. Green; SALLIE GIBBS (ARNALL) and JOHN C. (ARNALL). “The mother, who was born in Coweta County in 1844, died in August, 1892. (On) November 21, 1893, Mr. ARNALL married Mrs. ELIZABETH J. TEGNE, daughter of John and Elvira (Carlton) Urquhart, who was born in Coweta County in 1855. Mr. and Mrs. ARNALL are both members of the Baptist Church.” p. 520 – Coweta County Sketches “HUGH M. ARNOLD, one of the leading citizens of Newnan, Coweta Co., GA., was born in November, 1842, his parents being JAMES and MATILDA (WARE) ARNOLD. His father was born in Wilkes County, in 1802, and was reared on a farm. The parental grandfather of HUGH M. ARNOLD was a native of South Carolina, who came to Georgia before 1800, settling in the woods, in which there had never been a stick cut. HUGH M. ARNOLD was reared on a farm and attended school in an old log school-house with a stick chimney and a puncheon floor. For a short time he went to school in Newnan, but in 1861, when only eighteen years of age, enlisted in Company B, under Capt. R. L. Y. Long, remaining one year, at the expiration of which he re-enlisted and after two years, returned home and engaged in farming, which occupation he still continues. Mr. ARNOLD was in the battles of Cotton Hills, Seven Pines and Loop Creek. “In 1868 Mr. ARNOLD was united in marriage to Miss MARY TOWNSEN, daughter of James and Sarah (Grantlin) Townsen. To this union three children have been born: BRAD, MOLLIE, and SALLIE. Mrs. ARNOLD was born in Upson County, GA, and died in 1872, a member of the M. E. Church. Three years later, Mr. ARNOLD married FANNIE SIMS, daughter of John D. Sims, to whom six children have been born: FANNIE L. (ARNOLD), EVA (ARNOLD), JOHN (ARNOLD), ALMA H. M. (ARNOLD)(deceased), JENNIE C. (ARNOLD), and an infant. Mrs. Arnold was born and reared in Coweta County and is a member of the Baptist, while Mr. ARNOLD is a member of the M. E. Church. Mr. ARNOLD was formerly a member of the Masonic order. He began life with very little, but has succeeded well, and besides owning a large farm, has one of the nicest residences in Newnan, where he and his family are among the leading and most respected citizens.” -5- p. 627 – Elbert County Sketches “M’ALPIN ARNOLD. Like many of the early residents of Elbert County, GA., the ARNOLD family, from which Mr. McALPIN ARNOLD, a leading merchant and banker of Elberton descends, came from North Carolina. About 1815, DAVIS ARNOLD, a native of North Carolina, and his wife (ELIZABETH WILHITE) and family left the ‘Old North’ and located in Elbert County, GA. He was a farmer and one of the leading early settlers of the county. JOSEPH, one of his sons, brought up on the farm, and learning the carpenter’s trade, early prepared himself for a busy life. He added to the original acreage of the ARNOLD homestead and became a large slave owner. He served in the late War and died in Feburary, 1895, at the advanced age of seventy-eight years. JOSEPH ARNOLD married SARAH K. THORNTON, a daughter of Benjamin and Nancy (Payne) Thornton, natives of Virginia. Benjamin Thornton was a preacher who filled pulpits of the Baptist Church in Hart, Elbert and Oglethorpe Counties, for over forty years, dying in Hart County in 1876. “Mr. McALPIN ARNOLD, son of JOSEPH and SARAH K. (THORNTON) ARNOLD, was born on a farm in Elbert County in 1847. His education was obtained from the country schools and at the age of seventeen he enlisted in the War, serving in the militia and state troops, and was in the fight at Coosahatchie, SC. “In 1875, he married ANNIE CARTER, daughter of James M. Carter, who was born in Hart County. His father was born in Virginia, and belonged to the family of Carters in that state. Mr. Carter is a well-to-do farmer, now living in Hart County. Was in the general assembly in 1860, and was a brave soldier in the War Between the States. Mrs. ARNOLD’s mother, Mary Louise Clark, was a direct descendant of the Alston family, originally from Virginia, but whose descendants are now scattered over most of the southern states. They are a family of revolutionary distinction and many incidents of startling interest are connected with this family, both in the remote as well as in the recent history of our country. “By this union were born the following living children: SARAH LOUISE (ARNOLD), JULIUS Y. (ARNOLD), EDNA (ARNOLD), and CARTER (ARNOLD.) Mrs. ARNOLD was born in 1849. The early part of Mr. ARNOLD’s life was spent on the farm but in 1874 he engaged in the mercantile business with Thomas M. Swift. In 1876 this partnership was dissolved and he joined H. K. Gairdner in the business which has since been continued. Mr. ARNOLD is President of the Bank of Elberton, and is a representative business man of Elbert County. He is noted for his sound, practical judgment, prudence, sagacity and diligence. Connected with these qualities are traits of justice, integrity and absolute fidelity to every obligation.” -6- p. 705 – Fulton County Sketches “Col. REUBEN ARNOLD, one of the most talented lawyers of Atlanta, is a native of Greeneville, Tennessee. Born on Aug. 7, 1833, he was reared in this town until fifteen years old. In the fall of 1848 he entered the University of Tennessee, whence he graduated in 1851. He then began the study of law with his father, Gen. THOMAS D. ARNOLD, a member of congress from the First District. His father fought through the War of 1812 and was appointed Brigadier-General of the East Tennessee Militia. “Mr. REUBEN ARNOLD was admitted to the Bar in 1854, and located in Greeneville, Tennessee, where he prosecuted his profession until the opening of the War. In 1861 he organized the Twenty-Ninth Tennessee Infantry, and was elected Lieutenant-Colonel, and acted in this capacity while doing active service, except during the interval between the Battle of Fishing Creek in January, 1862, and the Battle of Shiloh in April, 1862. For these four months he commanded the regiment. From May, 1862, to May, 1863, he was unable to accompany his command on account of illness and was compelled to leave it. When health and vigor were fully regained he took his seat in the Tennessee legislature, to which he had been overwhelmingly elected, and consequently never rejoined his regiment. In May of 1863 he enlisted in the partisan rangers, an independent company commanded by his brother, JOHN Q. ARNOLD. He entered and continued a private until the close of the conflict. Col. ARNOLD participated in the following battles: Rock Castle, KY., Eastport, TN., Shiloh, Farmington, TN, Fishing Creek, and innumerable skirmishes and minor engagements. “After leaving his comrades he tramped to North Carolina and made a crop on a farm in Rutherford County, remaining there until November, 1865, and then removed to Atlanta, GA. Having received a full pardon from President Johnson, who was an intimate friend of his father, he began the practice of law. He formed a co-partnership with Col. E. N. Broyles, and later was associated with his brother, FRANK. At present the firm consists of himself and his two sons. “During the year 1867 he held the office of City Attorney of Atlanta. He is a Knight Templar, Mason, Red Man, and affiliates with the Episcopal Church. Col. ARNOLD was married in 1863, while the war was in progress, to VIRGINIA, daughter of the late Col. Wm. M. Lowry. She died in 1879, leaving six children as follows: VERNON (ARNOLD), REUBEN R. (ARNOLD), LOWRY P. (ARNOLD), VIRGINIA (ARNOLD), THOMAS B. (ARNOLD), and DAISY (ARNOLD). Col. ARNOLD is a practitioner of the old, fast-fading type. He possesses a just conception of the lofty principles and aims of his high calling and never stoops to a low or contemptible action. He believes in construing the law in its true, common- sense light, and raising it to the loftiest plane, above reproach and ignoble slander. He is minutely acquainted with all departments of the law – a well- developed, symmetrical disciple of Blackstone and Chitty. His success in managing difficult and sometimes desperate murder cases has been phenomenal. At cross-questioning he is adroit and cunning and before the jury almost irresistible. Humor and pathos are alike at his command. As a popular man, an eloquent speaker, and a logical, convincing lawyer Col. ARNOLD is without a superior.” -7- p. 974 – Glynn County Sketches “W. ARNOLD, proprietor of ‘Ocean View House,’ St. Simon’s Island, Glynn Co., GA is a son of FREDERICK ARNOLD, and was born in Prussia March 4, 1846. His father was a native of Bromberg, Germany, where he spent his days, and where he died in 1849. Mr. ARNOLD’s father gave him a good education preparatory to his studying for the profession of an architect. At the age of seventeen he commenced life for himself, without financial means. “In 1869 he came to the United States and after a short stop in New York came to Tattnall County, GA in 1870. Later he determined to settle permanently on St. Simon’s Island. Selecting the most eligible site, commanding an expansive ‘ocean view,’ he purchased thirty acres on the ocean beach, and has built and conducts in luxurious style and on the most liberal scale ‘Ocean View House,’ which is fast gaining the distinction of being one of the most attractive, delightful and popular of the summer resorts on the south Atlanta coast. “Mr. ARNOLD was married in 1881 to Miss ANNA F., daughter of Charles and Sarah (Hay) Stevens, natives respectively of Denmark and England. Mr. Stevens came to this country when about twenty-two years old, and died in Fort Delaware during the War, when about fifty years old. Mrs. Stevens (nee Hay) came to the United States when about eighteen years of age, is still living, and is about seventy- seven years old. Mr. and Mrs. ARNOLD were blessed with two children, LEOPOLD (ARNOLD) and WINNIEBAULD (ARNOLD). Mr. ARNOLD is a member of the Lutheran, and Mrs. ARNOLD is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church.” -8- “Memoirs of Georgia containing Historical Accounts of the State’s Civil, Military, Industrial and Professional Interests, and Personal Sketches of Many of its People” Vol. II, The South Historical Association (1895) (Note: This book is cover titled and more familiarly known as “Memoirs of Georgia, Historical and Biographical Illustrated.” TOB) p. 175 – Memoirs of Deceased Physicians “RICHARD DENNIS ARNOLD, born in the city of Savannah, GA, August, 1808; died in the same city, July 10, 1876, of phthisis pulmonalis. His early education was obtained from a private instructor. He graduated with high honor from Princeton College, New Jersey. After graduating from Princeton, he studied medicine in the office of Dr. W. R. Waring, of Savannah. In 1830 he was graduated M.D. by the University of Pennsylvania. After receiving his degree in medicine, he was awarded the position of house physician in Blockly Hospital, Philadelphia. His term of service in Blockly Hospital terminated in 1832, when he located in Savannah as a general practioner of medicine. He soon established himself as a physician of acknowledged skill. In 1835 he was appointed one of the physicians to the Savannah Hospital, and held this position for thirty years. He was noted for his sympathy with and services to the poor. With him, there was in the practice of medicine something higher and better than mere money-getting, i.e., the rich blessing of being permitted to do good to his fellow-beings. He was truly a good Samaritan. “All through life, although he was the physician of the wealthiest citizens of Savannah, he found pleasure in gratuitous services to the poor of the city. Dr. ARNOLD was one of the ablest and most prominent physicians of Georgia. He was one of the founders, and the first secretary, of the American Medical Association, which was organized in 1846, the meeting being held in New York City. [A long dissertation of Dr. ARNOLD’s affiliations within the medical world is outlined.] “He was a man of marked humor and possessed of wonderful power in satire, though it was never wielded so as to wound or offend. While fully in love with his profession, he took great interest in all public measure affecting the welfare of his city and state. No man labored more assiduously to promote the sanitary condition of Savannah. When rice fields were permitted to exist within the city of Savannah and the immediate vicinity, and thus decimate the inhabitants by malaria so engendered, Dr. ARNOLD used his great influence in moulding (sic) public sentiment and legal enactments to suppress the evil. Every sanitary measure had his advocacy. It was largely due to his influence that an ample and healthful public water supply was secured in Savannah. He was chosen president of the water commission of that city, and served in that position for thirty- five consecutive years. “He was for a number of years a member of the board of health of Savannah; a member of the Masonic fraternity for fifty years, holding high official positions in the order, and member of the board of managers of the Savannah city hospital. He was also one of the founders of the Georgia Historical Society. His interest in public affairs naturally led him into politics. He was repeatedly elected an alderman, and in 1843, 1851, 1859, 1863, was selected mayor of Savannah, the latter term extending to the end of the war. He was several times elected to the general assembly of the state, service in both the house and the senate. [Additional information on his success is listed including titles of medical literature.] “In the several epidemics of yellow fever in Savannah during Dr. ARNOLD’s life, he rendered valuable and conspicuous service. Dr. ARNOLD was truly the beloved physician in the hearts of the citizens of Savannah. His death was an irreparable loss to his city and state. When he died, the mayor of Savannah convened the board of aldermen in special session, and feelingly announced the death of the great and good physician. The board of aldermen adopted resolutions expressive of the high esteem in which Dr. ARNOLD was held in that city, and subsequently attended his funeral in a body. The funeral was one of the largest every held in the state – all classes thus testifying their great love for the deceased. In the death of Dr. ARNOLD the city of Savannah and the state of Georgia lost one of its noblest, best citizens, and the medical profession of that city, the state and the nation mourns the loss of a good Samaritan and savant. -9- “History of Georgia” Volume II, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago-Atlanta (1926) (Note: Vol. 2, 3, 4 are “biographical” volumes – only ARNOLD sketch is in Vol. 2) p. 66 ZACH ARNOLD – “One of the ablest and best known attorneys in southwestern George is ZACH ARNOLD, whose activities have brought him prominently before the people in professional, civic and public connections. He was born on the 5th of January, 1889, at Stockbridge, Henry County, Georgia, and is a son of Rev. W. E. and HATTIE (MURPHY) ARNOLD, the latter now living in Atlanta. The father, who is now deceased, was educated at Middle Georgia College and was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church South during all of his active life. ZACH ARNOLD received his preliminary education in the public schools of Loganville, Barnesville and Fairmount, after which he attended Gordon Institute and Young Harris College. He then entered the Atlanta Law School, from which he was graduated June 11, 1911, with the B. L. degree and the same day was admitted to the Bar. He engaged in the practice of his profession in Atlanta until 1913, when he moved to Fort Gaines, where he has practiced continuously since, gaining marked prestige as an able and successful lawyer and as a public-spirited and influential citizen. He employs none of the arts and tricks of oratory, but his speeches are eloquent in the clearness of statement, the broad common sense of reasoning, the force of logic, earnestness and power. He has been connected, as counsel, with most of the important cases in the local courts for years and is considered unusually safe and sound as a counselor. He is a member of the Georgia Bar Association and was a Vice President of the same in 1924. He also belongs to the Commercial Law League of America. “Mr. ARNOLD takes a deep interest in everything relating in any way to the welfare of his community, cooperating in the advancement of all measures for the betterment of local conditions. He is a stanch Democrat and represented his county in the lower house of the State Legislature for eight years, from 1915 to 1922, attending ten sessions, and during the last two years was speaker pro tem. Fraternally he is a Mason, is a Past Master of his lodge and is now High Priest of the Royal Arch Chapter; he also belongs to the Knights of Pythias and the Woodmen of the World. He is a member and steward of the Methodist Episcopal Church and is Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School. He is Secretary of the Board of Education. He served for ten years, 1903 to 1913, as a member of the Fifth Regiment, National Guard of Georgia and was Captain in said Regiment for two years. During the World War he gave effective service as Chairman of the Food Administration and Chairman of the Liberty Loan drives in his county. He was also Vice President of the Red Cross at Fort Gaines. “Mr. ARNOLD was married June 29, 1911, to Miss JIMMIE McLENDON, of Fort Gaines, a daughter of N. H. and Jimmie Elizabeth (Wright) McLendon, the former a prosperous and highly respected merchant of Fort Gaines, while the mother was born in Stewart County, Georgia. Mrs. ARNOLD graduated from the Fort Gaines High School, then attended the Bessie Tift College and the Atlanta Conservatory of Music and taught voice and oratory prior to her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. ARNOLD are the parents of four children: ELIZABETH (ARNOLD), EDWINA (ARNOLD), ZACH (ARNOLD), JR., and RUTH (ARNOLD). Personally, Mr. ARNOLD is a man among men, possessing to a marked degree those qualities which commend a man to the good opinion of his fellows. He is kindly and thoughtful in all his personal relations and stands high in the confidence and esteem of the entire community.” -10- “A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians” Vol. V, by Lucian Lamar Knight, The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago-New York (1917) (Note: No ARNOLD Biographies in Volumes 1-4. Indexed by Biography Subject only. TOB) p. 2601 - EDWARD ZACHRY ARNOLD “It is gratifying to note to how large an extent the Bar of the State of Georgia has in later, as well as former, generations been recruited from the native sons of this great Empire commonwealth of the South, and a prominent representative of the legal profession at the Bar of the Pataula judicial circuit is EDWARD ZACHRY ARNOLD (known as ZACH ARNOLD), who is engaged in the successful practice of law at Fort Gaines, the judicial center of Clay County, and who is a scion of an old and honored Georgia family. “Mr. ARNOLD was born at Stockbridge, Henry County, Georgia, on the 5th of January, 1889, and is a son of Rev. WALTER E. and HATTIE LAVONIA (MURPHY) ARNOLD, who now maintain their residence at Birmingham, Alabama. Rev. WALTER E. ARNOLD was born and reared in Henry County, Georgia, and his wife was born at Jonesboro, Clayton County, this state. Rev. WALTER E. ARNOLD is a man of high intellectual attainments and has devoted his mature life to effective service as a clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He was long a prominent and influential figure in the ministry of the North Georgia Conference, and here he continued his ministrations until January, 1907, when he retired from the active work and moved to Atlanta, there remaining until January, 1916, when he moved to Birmingham, Alabama. He was born in the year 1863, when his native state was the stage of great polemic activities incidental to the Civil War, and thus his boyhood days were passed under the adverse conditions that marked the so-called period of reconstruction in the South. Of the children the eldest is MABRY WARD (ARNOLD), who is now the wife of EDWARD O. BATSON, of Sylacauga, Alabama; EMMA HAYNES ARNOLD is a successful and popular teacher of music in the City of Atlanta; WALTER E. (ARNOLD) Jr., is engaged in the insurance business at Birmingham, Alabama; JAMIE EDMUNDSON (ARNOLD) and CHARLES S. (ARNOLD) remain at the parental home; and he whose name initiates this review was the third in order of birth. “EDWARD ZACHRY ARNOLD was favored in being reared under the influences of a home of distinctive culture and refinement and after availing himself of the advantages of the public schools he was for three years a student in the Gordon Military Institute, at Barnesville, Pike County. Upon leaving this institution he entered Young Harris College, at Young Harris, Georgia, where he continued higher academic studies for a period of about two years. In consonance and with his ambition and well-formulated plans, he was then matriculated in the Atlanta Law School, and in this admirable institute he completed the prescribed course and was graduated as a member of the Class of 1911, with first honor, and as valedictorian of his class. After thus receiving his degree of Bachelor of Laws he engaged in the practice of his profession in the City of Atlanta, where he was successful in his work and proved the legitimacy of his choice of vocation. In the capital city he continued in active general practice for two years, and within this period he was elected Captain of a local military company of the Georgia National Guard. “In April, 1913, Mr. ARNOLD removed to Fort Gaines, the former home of his wife, and here he became a member of the law firm of King, Castellon and ARNOLD, this alliance having been continued until the dissolution of the firm, on the 1st of January, 1915. Since that time he has conducted an individual practice in this city and he has strong vantage-place at the bar of this circuit, where he has appeared in connection with much important litigation and has proved one of the versatile and resourceful advocates and able counselors of the Pataula circuit. He has a representative clientage, and it should be specially noted that he is attorney for the First National Bank, the Union Savings Bank, the local electric light company, the Fort Gaines Cotton Oil Company, and the Alaga Fertilizer Company, all important corporations of Fort Gaines. “Mr. ARNOLD is recognized as one of the vigorous and influential exponents of the principles of the democratic party and in the autumn of 1914 he was elected representative of Clay County in the lower house of the Georgia Legislature. [Additional information on his positions with the legislature.] “He and his wife are zealous members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and he is serving as a steward of the church at Fort Gaines. He is affiliated with the Masonic fraternity, the Knights of Pythias and the Woodmen of the World, and holds active membership in the Georgia State Bar Association. Mr. ARNOLD has not only attained to distinctive success and prestige in his profession but is also a successful representative of agricultural industry in Clay County, where he owns a well-improved landed estate. He is one of the progressive and public-spirited men of Clay County and commands inviolable place in popular confidence and good will. “JAMES ARNOLD, grandfather of him whose name initiates this article, served with distinction as a soldier of the Confederacy in the Civil War, in which he was a Lieutenant in the command of General Longstreet. He was a son of ELIJAH B. ARNOLD, who was an extensive planter and slaveholder of Henry County and who was one of the influential citizens of that county, which he represented in the State Legislature, having served as clerk of the House of Representatives when the capital of the state was in Milledgeville and having held this position for twenty years. “On the 29th of June, 1911, was solemnized the marriage of EDWARD ZACHRY ARNOLD to Miss JIMMIE ELIZABETH McLENDON, daughter of Neeham H. and Ada (Wright) McLendon, of Fort Gaines, her father being a leading merchant and planter of Clay County and a representative of one of the old and influential families of this section of the state. Mr and Mrs. ARNOLD have two children: JIMMIE ELIZABETH (ARNOLD), who was born in Atlanta on the 15th October, 1912; and EDWINA ZACHRY (ARNOLD), who was born at Fort Gaines on the 16th April, 1914. -11- “A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians” Vol. VI, by Lucian Lamar Knight, The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago-New York (1917) p. 3276 – OLIVER H. ARNOLD., Jr. “Of the wholesale grocery house of ARNOLD-Canning Company of Athens, President and General Manager of the Athens Foundry and Machine Works, has made such use of his time and opportunities since boyhood as to constitute a career of striking business success and of those attainments which give secure position and influence as a citizen of Georgia. “He was born near Lexington in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, a son of OLIVER H. ARNOLD and NANCY E. (JOHNSON) ARNOLD. His father, who was born February 25, 1835, and died September 20, 1907, served three years in the War Between the States in the Confederate Army. He followed farming until past fifty, and in 1890 organized the Bank of Lexington at Lexington, Georgia, the first county bank organized in the state. After that until his death he was a banker, farmer and merchant. During 1888-89 he served his county in the House of Representatives, and was County Commissioner of Oglethorpe County for as many terms as he ever offered. A distinctive part of his public record is that he was never defeated in any political ambition. Those who were associated with him and those who knew of him esteemed him very highly as a financier and business man, and also as a fine type of Christian gentleman. Both he and his wife were very devout and active members of the Missionary Baptist Church, which he had joined in early manhood. His wife, a daughter of David H. Johnson, shared with her husband all the trails and joys of life, and was a big factor in his success. A true Christian woman, she was equally a loving mother and a kind neighbor. “If these worthy parents had sought no other monument than the creditable careers of their children, they would deserve recognition in any history of the state. There were five children: NATHANIEL D. ARNOLD, SARAH J. ARNOLD, ROBERT J. ARNOLD, WOODIE ARNOLD and OLIVER H. ARNOLD, Jr. “NATHANIEL D. ARNOLD was born March 10, 1859, is a member of the ARNOLD-Canning Company at Athens, and for twenty years served his county in official capacity. Dr. R. J. ARNOLD, who was born December 30, 1863, was a successful physician, a profession he followed actively until a few years ago, when he gave up his practice on account of ill health, and has also served his country four years as representative. SARAH J. ARNOLD, who as born in Oglethorpe County October 2, 1861, married L. F. EDWARDS, a farmer and cotton manufacturer; she is a devoted Christian and a great worker in the Missionary Baptist Church, to which the entire family belongs. Dr. WOODIE ARNOLD, who was born December 25, 1865, died March 9, 1913, was also a successful physician. “OLIVER H. ARNOLD, Jr., gained his early education in the common schools and by six months of study in Emory College. He left college on account of ill health. While there he became a member of the Chi Phi fraternity. “At the age of fourteen he began employment with the firm of ARNOLD and Stewart as a salesman. He remained with that one company practically until he was twenty-one years of age. At that date in 1888 he engaged in the retain mercantile business for himself. After thirteen years of a retail business at Machen, Jasper County, Georgia, Mr. ARNOLD removed in 1901 to Athens and organized the ARNOLD Grocery Company, a wholesale concern. He was active in this business until 1914, and during that time he also organized the Athens Mattress and Spring Bed Company, which since it was founded in 1908 has been under Mr. ARNOLD’s direct supervision. A part of the time he had his nephew ROBERT O. ARNOLD as his assistant, and together they made the factory a very pronounced success. On January 1, 1911, Mr. ARNOLD took over the management of the Athens Foundry and Machine Works. At that time it was a business hardly to be mentioned among the live concerns of the city. The value of the plant has been greatly depreciated but taking the business as he found it Mr. ARNOLD has built it up to a splendid success and the company now has a product that finds a widely extended market. They manufacture brass and iron castings, build and repair engines and all kinds of machinery, and hundreds of farms, mills and shops all over the southeastern states use in some form or other the output of this Athens plant. For a number of years Mr. ARNOLD has also been a director of several county banks. “He and his entire family have been life-long democrats. A special distinction belongs to the ARNOLD family in that when OLIVER H. ARNOLD during 1915-16 represented his home County of Clarke in the State Legislature, he had as fellow members two of his older brothers, all serving from different counties and all born in Oglethorpe County. A parallel to this record cannot probably be found anywhere in the United States, and it is most unusual for three brothers at the same time to wield such an important influence in state legislation. “Mr. ARNOLD in fraternal matters is affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Woodmen of the World. Like the rest of the family, he is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. “On April 26, 1893, at Machen, Jasper County, Georgia, he married AURIE A. BAYNES. She was born in Jasper County, near Shady Dale, on February 18, 1877, a daughter of William E. Baynes and Eugenia A. Baynes of Machen. Her father, William E. Baynes, spent four years of service in the Confederate army. Mr. and Mrs. ARNOLD have three children: JENNIE A. ARNOLD, born at Machen, Georgia, September 1, 1894; ELIZABETH O. ARNOLD, born at Athens, Georgia, July 15, 1903; and EUGENIA A. ARNOLD, born at Athens, December 25, 1907.” -12- “A Collection of cemetery records, within 30 miles of the center of Atlanta, compiled by Mr. Franklin M. Garrett, official historian of the City of Atlanta” (Note: The records, in the manuscript collection of The Atlanta Historical Society, were compiled by Mr. Garrett mainly in the early 1930’s and it is virtually certain that many of the grave markers no longer exist, due to the phenomenal growth and development of the Atlanta area since that time.
