We hope to do this by publishing an Arnold Family Magazine, quarterly, which will contain records of a private and public nature on the local , state and national level. Our ultimate purpose is to publish a family history containing as many branches of the Arnold family as can be documented. To this purpose the family Historian- Genealogist will accept, evaluate, file, preserve and possibly publish records as they are received. Publications: The Association founds its Magazine with this first number August 1, 1970. It will be issued each Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. Other publications will be announced as they are projected. Membership: All individuals (regardless of surname), libraries or societies may apply for membership which is on a calendar year basis, August to May (four quarterlies). Membership dues are $4.00 annually. Quarterlies if bought separately are $2.50 per issue. All members, other than Libraries and Societies, are required to complete applications and fill in pedigree charts to earliest known ancestor. Requests should be made to: Ann Arnold Hennings, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22043. Holdings: The Association will place all of its records, publications, books, etc. in the hands of its Historian-Genealogist. In the event of his/her death the surviving officers will decide the place of repository. 2 Genealogical inquiries: The Association keeps a record of all members' surnames in its files. Members will be furnished upon request, if accompanied by a self addressed, stamped envelope, the names and addresses of others working on similar families. It will also furnish lists of genealogists (in most cases supplied by Archives in Southern States), but it cannot assume nor guarantee the nature and accuracy of work done by any such genealogist. Editorial Policy: Neither the Editor, or the Arnold Family Association of the South and/or the members of the Editorial Staff, assume any responsibility for error of fact, or opinion, expressed by contributors. It is our earnest desire to publish only reliable source material of a genealogical nature. Materials for publication are welcomed and should be sent to the Editor. Please type such materials or send zerox copies of records. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Welcome to membership in the Arnold Family Association of the South. Recently several of us, who are interested in the various branches of the Arnolds, who were in the various Southern States before and after the Revolutionary War, have formed the Arnold Family Association of the South. We feel this would be of great benefit to all concerned by bringing together the data on the various branches of the Arnolds, who were in the various Southern States and publishing it in a quarterly for the benefit of the members of the Association, thereby eliminating so much letter writing to get leads or clues on our own branch of the Arnolds. After twenty years of research and writing hundreds of letters, I know how frustrating it is to endeavor to contact someone who might have the data you were endeavoring to obtain. By all of the descendants of the Arnolds working together and sending their family records including Bible records, tombstone inscriptions and other pertinent information to the Editor, Mrs. MacIvor, who will publish the data in the Quarterly, I confidently feel that all of us will be greatly benefited. If you have not already sent your application and family chart to Mrs. Hennings, may I urge you to do so promptly and become a charter member of the Association and receive the first issue of the Quarterly. 3 MEET OUR MEMBERS This will be a regular column in our Quarterly. Not only will new members be introduced as they join, but births, deaths, marriages, graduations, appointments, honors and awards will be noted as they are sent in to the Editor. This column will be as lively as we all make it, so send in your news items today to be included in the next issue. The column begins with profiles of our three officers: Our President, Edwin Albert Arnold, a 330 Scottish Rite Mason, was born 21 July, 1889 in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1900 his family moved to Commerce, Texas, where he attended the public schools. On 15 January, 1957, he completed fifty years of faithful service with the Sante Fe Railway Company. Shortly after his family moved to Fresno, California, where, on 15 January, 1907, he began his career as a callboy. By steady and conscientious application to his duties, he advanced to position of Chief Clerk in 1915. He has always been a leader in civic, church, and school affairs. He served both as President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Corcoran (California) Chamber of Commerce while in residence there. While in Corcoran he was instrumental in founding the first Boy Scout Troop in that city and served as a member of its Board for a number of years. He also served on the Corcoran Elementary School Board and was its clerk twelve years. He was very active in the Presbyterian Church and for eighteen years served it as Trustee and Elder. He and his fine wife, who was Miss Pauline Rutland, his childhood sweetheart in Commerce, Texas, have two lovely daughters: Mrs. Eugene Murphy (Ann Ellen) of Sonora; Mrs. William Cooper (Jean Marie) of Stockton. Ed. and his wife are very proud of their four grandchildren whom they enjoy very much; two boys and two girls. Mr. Arnold has held many positions of importance and trust in Scottish Rite Masonry, among them Venerable Master and Wise Master, as well as Commander and Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. He was coroneted as Inspector General Honorary of the 330 on 21 January, 1956. He was instrumental in organizing the Aahmes Temple of the Shrine. In Stockton, he helped organize the San Joaquin Ben Ali Shrine Club, reputed to be the largest Club in Shrinedom. He has also served as Worthy Patron of the Corcoran Chapter of Eastern Star. In the past, Mr. Arnold has enjoyed golfing and fishing as recreation. Now he devotes a great deal of his time to genealogical research. He was one of the organizers of the San Joaquin Genealogical Society in 1952 and has served as its treasurer for many years. He is a member of the following genealogical societies: National, Tennessee and California and is also a member of the Randolph County (N.C.) Historical Society. The Arnold Family Association of the South is fortunate in deed to have this very fine, able and honorable man as its first president. 4 Edwin A. She lived just across the District line in Montgomery County, Maryland, until married. Upon graduation from high school, Ann attended the Washington School for Secretaries and took a position at the American University as private secretary to the Vice President, Dean of Faculties. In June, 1957, Ann married a childhood friend, "Jerry" Hennings of McLean, Virginia, and took up residence in Fairfax County, Virginia. This put her in the neighborhood of most of her ancestors and those of her husband. Her full-time secretarial duties stopped at the University when her first daughter, Virginia Ann, arrived March 13, 1963. Linda Lee, the Hennings' second daughter, was born July 24, 1966. At present Ann is working three to four days a week at the University as secretary to the Budget Officer and one day a week for the Historian of the Virginia Conference United Methodist Historical Society, Inc.; Jerry is service manager of a thriving electronics firm in McLean, a short distance from their home in Falls Church. When time permits, Ann, Jerry, and the children hook up their travel trailer and head for new country. They have explored over half the state of Virginia (taking in as many court houses as can be fitted into their schedule) and plan to head West in the next few years,so watch out, you might meet our Corresponding Secretary anytime when you least expect it. 5 Ann Virginia Arnold Hennings1 is the dau. of Worth Hampton Arnold2 b. 6 June, 1904 Arlington, Va. d. 4 Mar., 1958, Washington, D.C., m. 18 June, 1927, Virginia Mae Stoy3 b. 14 Sept., 1906, Washington, D.C. COLONIAL AND REVOLUTIONARY RECORDS We will begin our first issue with Arnold beginnings--taken from Cavaliers and Pioneers by Nell Marian Nugent (Richmond, Va., Dietz Publishing Co., 1934). By way of introduction, one of the earliest Arnolds in America seems to have been one Peter Arnold. In Vol. I, Tyler's Virginia Biography, we read of Peter Arundell or Erondelle, Burgess, and designated, Gentle Man, a native of Normandy, a member of the London Company. He published several books before he came to Virginia in 1620. In 1624, he was living in Buck roe, in the corporation of Elizabeth City, with--his children--John, Elizabeth and Margaret. Tyler has other articles about this gentleman's descendants which we will publish from time to time. If the National Archives does not have the information it will refund you your money. If you do not have GSA forms 6751, they are free upon request from: General Services Administration, National Archives and Records Service, Washington, D.C. 20408 Revolutionary War Record of Francis Arnold #W106 (Nat. Arch. No.) Contributed by E. A. Arnold Abstracted by Hazel Arnold MacIvor Francis Arnold made application for pension from White County, Tennessee, on 12 September, 1818, giving his age as 62 years. He enlisted under recruiting officer, Capt. Thomas Minor, at New Market, Spotsylvania County, Virginia - about a year before the battle of Monmouth (in the year 1777). He enlisted for the term of three years. He was marched to Williamsburg, Virginia in the 2nd Va Regt under command of Captain Quarles with Col. (?) or Lt. Col. (?) Charles Dabney and William Brent (afterward Col. of the 15th Va. Regt.) commanding them for a short time (he is not sure of these things due to great lapse of time). He served out his three years and was discharged in 1780 at Falmouth, Virginia by Major John Lee under whom Arnold had also served. He has long since lost his discharge and can produce no evidence save the Affadavit of Charles Kennedy, Esq. Arnold states that he has no means of subsistence "but by his labour and which he is unable to perform by his having lost in a great degree the use of his arm and his situation and circumstances in life are such and so reduced as to require assistance from his country. . . ." He signs his application with his mark. Perry W. Humphries, Judge of the Circuit Court, certifies that he is satisfied Arnold was a Revolutionary soldier and that his circumstances deserve his receiving assistance. He was then placed on the Pension roles of Tennessee and received $8.00 per month. On the 8 September, 1826, Arnold made application for the continuation of his pension, as he claimed never to have received his pension certificate, therefore he did not know the number and all efforts on his part to attain his pension were unavailing. In this second affadavit, he states his occupation as a farmer and gives his family as himself, his wife, Elizabeth, aged 62 years (also in poor health) and a daughter, Barbara, aged 17 years (also in poor health, but improving). These family connections established, he gives an inventory of his worldly goods, which amounted to $23.75, of which the disposition is recorded. 16 Elizabeth Arnold, widow of Francis Arnold, made affadavit 7 July, 1840 in order to obtain "half-pay and pensions to certain widows" under the Act of Congress, 7 July, 1838. She gave her age as sixty-four years. She declared she was married to Francis Arnold 5 August, 1790, and that her husband died on the 5 February, 1831. She signed her application by mark. Peter Arnold, aged 48 years, son of Francis and Elizabeth Arnold, made affadavit from 8 April, 1851 at Coffee County, Tennessee. He stated that he was the 7th child of his parents, born 28 Sept., 1803, and that there was also 7 children younger than he (this he stated was originally in the family record which was by now lost or destroyed). He stated his father died in White County, Tenn. (Having moved there from S.C. in Feb., 1830), and that his widowed mother moved into his (Peter's) house. He states he cannot recall the exact date his parents moved from S.C. but he has always understood from his parents that they were married in Greenville, S.C. in 1790, and that he understood his mother's name prior to her marriage to Francis Arnold, was Elizabeth Porter. Peter Arnold signed his affadavit by mark. Hayes Arnold of White County, Tenn., son and heir-at-law of Elizabeth Arnold and "duly appointed administrator" to her estate, constituted and appointed on the 28th March, 1853, William G. Sims of White County, Tenn., and Willis G. Wade of New York, lawful attorneys for himself and the other heirs of Francis and Elizabeth Arnold, to prosecute the government of the United States for any and all claims to which the heirs were entitled. He signed his name. No further disposition. Would all who read this column please send zerox copies of your Revolutionary ancestor's services to the editor so that they may be published and thereby be of service to all who need them? * * * Sometimes an ancestor's service cannot be proved by either DAR membership papers or by National Archives records. Only state archives will have the records. Such records exist in the Virginia State Archives at Richmond in one form known as Public Service Claims. The Editor knows of no printed Index to this very important file. One must either go search in person or pay someone to search for them. The Editor searched the Public Service Claims files, Summer, 1969, for all Johns and Williams Arnold. The results are given below. JOHN ARNOLD in Records of the Revolutionary War (Va. BOOK REVIEWS "Genealogy of One Line of the Hopkins Family" (for private distribution: Providence, R. I.; J. A. R. A. Reid, Printers; 1881) Book read at Burton Historical Collection, Detroit Public Library, Main Branch and reviewed by Hazel Arnold MacIvor. This book is of great importance to all those Arnolds or Arnold descendants of Daniel Hopkins Arnold, who died in Cobb County, Georgia, 24 May, 1868. Mr. Arnold was born 4 November, 1794, in North Providence, R.I. (Cf. Cemetery records, Elisha Winn's story, Greenville, S.C., estate of Edward S. Arnold, and Gwinnett County Census records, all 30 in forthcoming issues, for further details of this man's life.) His father was Smith Arnold of Smithfield, R.I.1 and his mother was Deborah Hopkins who was the daughter of Daniel Hopkins and Susanna Wilkinson. Susanna Wilkinson Hopkins was the daughter of John Wilkinson and Ruth _____? Through this Wilkinson line, it is said, Arnold descendants can trace back to King Alfred the Great.2 On this Arnold line, descendants now living in the Atlanta, Georgia, area can trace back to William Arnold, one of the founders of the Baptist Church in America and a co-founder, with Roger Williams of the colony of Rhode Island.3 "The Arnold Martin Family History" (Compiled and published by Lorena Martin Spillers, 1505 East 19th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1960). Book read at Georgia Department Archives and History, Atlanta, Georgia and reviewed by Hazel Arnold MacIvor. This book gives very little ancestry of William Arnold, 1759- 1825, Revolutionary soldier, beyond that his father was Henry Arnold of Henry Co., Va. and Stokes Co., N.C. His pension number at the national Archives is S37684. In his pension application, he calls his wife Elizabeth (nee Shelton?) and gives her age as 60 years (1820). William Arnold's son, James Arnold and Elizabeth Arnett (?) were the parents of Martha Anne Arnold who married Henry Anderson Martin, progenitors of the author. Most of the book is given over to the descendants of this couple who were of Washington Co., Ga. "German Element of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia" by John Walter Wayland Michie Co., Charlottesville, Va., 1907, p. 98. This first issue of the Arnold Family Association of the South would never have been published had your editor been able to find William Arnold's* parents last summer. Frustrated and in despair, I turned to several renowned genealogists for advice. They all suggested forming a family association as being the quickest and surest way to find long lost ancestors. Inspired, an ad was drafted for the Genealogical Helper. Ann Arnold Hennings responded immediately. She has proved to be a well organized, tireless worker on behalf of the Arnolds. Just prior to publishing the ad, Mr. Edwin A. Arnold had been contacted, his address being furnished by a mutual acquaintance, an Arnold descendant, of course. He has contributed much from his store of organizational ability and experience. (*See pedigree chart of Editor.) This issue was both a chore and a joy to put together and I hope to be around to put out many, many more. Just keep sending in your records. All will be published, with your by-line, eventually. Our Winter Issue will contain, among other things: Leonard Andrea's notes on the Arnolds Roswell, Ga., Cemetery Records The Elisha Winn story of Daniel H. Arnold Edward S. Arnold's Administration (Greenville Co., S.C.) Arnold Index to Logan Co., Ky. Wills and Administrations ... 1800 Census of Spartanburg, Laurens and Union Counties of Arnolds and Allied Families Some Virginia Marriages abstracted by Eleanor M. White and Ann Arnold Hemmings Future issues will contain the Fulton Co., Ga., Marriage Index, Abbeville, S.C. Wills and Administrations; Spotsylvania Co. Va.
