All contributions for publica- tion or comments to the Editor, Mrs. Hazel Arnold MacIvor, should be sent to the above address. Purpose: The purpose of the Arnold Family Association off the South is to bring into contact with one another all those who are researching Arnold and allied families, who either originated in the South, or came through it and stayed long enough to leave records. We hope to do this by publishing an Arnold Family Magazine, Quarterly, which will contain records of a private and public nature on the local, state; and national level. Our ultimate purpose is to publish an Arnold Family History containing as many branches of the Arnold Family as can be documented. To this purpose the Arnold Family Historian- Genealogist will accept, evaluate, file, preserve, and possibly publish records as they are received. Publications: The Arnold Family Association at present publishes only its Quarterly. Other publications will be announced as they are projected. Membership: All individuals regardless of surname, libraries or societies may apply far membership which is on a calendar year basis, August to May (four quarterlies). Membership dues are $4 annually. Quarterlies, if bought separately are $2.50 per issue. Aid members, other than Libraries or Societies, are required to complete applications and fill in pedigree charts to earliest known ancestor. Bequests should be made to Ann A. Hennings, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia, 22043. Please make cut check or money order to Arnold Family Association of the South. No cash please. Holdings: The Arnold Family Association will place all of its records, publications, books, etc. in the hands of its Historian-Genealogist. In the event of his/her death, the surviving officers will decide the place of repository. Genealogical Inquiries: The Arnold Family Association keeps a record of all members' surnames in its files. Members will be furnished upon request, if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope, the names and addresses of others working on similar families. It will also furnish lists of genealogists (in most cases supplied by Archives in Southern states), but It cannot assume responsibility for nor guarantee the nature and accuracy of work done by any such genealogist. Editorial Policy: Neither the Editor, or the Arnold Family Association of the South and or the members of the Editorial Staff, assume any responsibility for error of fact, or opinion, expressed by contributors. It is our earnest desire to publish only reliable source material of a genealogical nature. Materials for publication are welcome and should be sent to the Editor. Please type such materials or send xerox copies of original records. 87 From the Editor's Pen: The very first thing I want to do this issue is to apologize for the extremely poor copy each and every one of us got of our Vol. I, No. 2 Issue. The mimeograph machine we used was old and if one tried to use more ink to darken the copy then it became temperamental and slung ink in every direction. We are hoping this issue will be an improvement. Our hard-working Secretary, Ann Hennings, has volunteered to type the stencils, run off the copies, colate and mail them. The reason she has taken on so much work is that our coffers are getting mighty empty and this is the cheapest method by which we can produce the Quarterly. The only time she could type it was during her vacation, the last two weeks in December, so while most of us were enjoying Christmas vacation, she was hard at work for all of us. I am sure I sneak for every member when I say "Thank you, so much, Ann!" (Typist's Note - You're Welcome.) As for me, my editorial work on the next Issue always begins the day after I send out the last issue. We must have material to go into the Quarterly by, at least, six weeks before the quarterly is to go to press. So start getting things together immediately for our Summer and Fall issues. So many people have sent so much, but I think a special mention should be made of Mrs. Foster B. Hammers, whose husband is the Arendell. She sent us 107 pages of well-documented, scholarly research work; Mrs. Frank C. Beard, who sent xerox copies of very old Bible records and Revolutionary records as well as a number of other records. Says Mrs. Beard, "The Arnold Quarterlies are just wonderful. Believe they will help all Arnolds." We hope so, Mrs. Beard and thank you and all others who keep contributing records. That effervescent and ever-young member of ours (72 years young), Marie Garland, complained of an "intellectual tummy ache after reading our last Quarterly. "Too many Arnolds,' she said. Now, now Marie, I'm sure you don't mean that. Two of our members have the distinction of being Arnolds on both sides of their houses. Mrs. Ethridge Scott has both paternal and maternal Arnold lines which our members will see when it comes her turn for us to run her pedigree. Mrs. Annie Arnold of Laurenceville, Ga. is descended from my Great, Great Grandfather a brother, Anderson Arnold, while her husband is descended from my Great, Great Grandfather, Harrison Arnold. Well, I have found so many branches of Southern Arnolds that are very fond of marrying their cousins. As I write this, Mrs. Hennings, Mrs. Marion Ledgerwood, and myself have donated a year's subscription to the Virginia State Archives, Houston (Texas) Public Library, and the Georgia Department of Archives and History, respectively. Won't you please choose one of the repositories listed on the last newsletter you received and make out a check for $4 giving them a years free subscription. Make out check to Arnold Family Association and send it to Mrs. Hennings and we'll see that the institution at your choice gets a subscription in your came. This will not only fatten our starving kitty but will get our records to where people are researching and will, no doubt, result in many of us being contacted and making connections art lines we thought were blank walls. There are no queries this issue since none were sent in. Get yours in soon for the next issue. We are not giving the second installment of Leonard Andrea's notes as planned. They are being microfilmed, but will be continued next issue. 88 Slowly, distinct lines are beginning to emerge among the maze of Southern Arnolds. You can help this process of unraveling by sending us your records. Will you please remember to always cite your sources: title, author, Publisher, place Published, year published, volume and page numbers for all secondary sources submitted (written sources); and the name of the county, county seat where court house is located, microfilm # (if record is on microfilm), type of record, volume and page number where record can be found, for all primary sources (original records). Milton Rubicam, one of America's most outstanding genealogists said, in a talk before the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research last spring, that tens of thousands of pages of material are being printed in the field of genealogy that are not worth the paper they are printed on because they are largely unsubstantiated and undocumented. Remember if you take your precious time and effort to look up a record, take a little more time to document it, so that it will stand for all the world to see that you were a careful genealogist that passed records That meant something down to the next generation. They will bless you for it. Have a lovely spring. Hazel Arnold MacIvor Meet Our Members: Everyone is back from vacations, the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons have come and gone and winter has settled, down in earnest. Now is a great time to do one s genealogy and we hope that the many, many Arnold records we have for you this issue will be the means of some of you making connections on your lines. Mr. William H. Arnold, our charter member at 107 Principia Lane, #202, Oak Ridge, Tennessee 37630, was born 7 August, 1925, at Kansas City, Missouri. He spent his early childhood at Drexel and Warrenburg, Missouri, and at Stanley, Kansas. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1943 where he trained as a ship's cook. He joined the Air Force in 1947. lie was a Sergeant when on 4 November, 1949, he married Janice Elaine Ward at Knoxville, Tennessee. To this union were born three children: Janice Elizabeth Arnold, August 23, 1951; John Raymond Arnold, March 23, 1955, Jeffrey Harold Arnold, April 6, 1956 (all at the Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas). Mrs. Arnold had two children by a previous marriage to Joseph Hudson who died June 8, 1948 in Rosedale, Tennessee. Their surnames were changed to Arnold at Wichita Falls, Texas, in September of 1950. Mr. Arnold retired on June 1, 1966, after twenty-two years in the service of his country. Being curious about his ancestry, he owes his start in genealogy to his Uncle Ray Arnold of Tracy, Calif. His grandfather, Isaac Arnold was in the Oklahoma Land Rush. Mr. Arnold is presently researching in West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana. Besides his hobby of genealogy, his still keeps his hand on the cooking pots, collecting new recipes and creating some original ones. Revolutionary Records John Arnold, Revolutionary Soldier #S37682 of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, to Clarke County, Kentucky (Abstracted from Xerox copies of the original records in the National Archives by Hazel Arnold MacIvor) State of Kentucky, Clarke County. 26th day of March, 1834 personally came before Judge Richard French, of the Circuit Court, John Arnold and swore the following (in order to attain the benefits of the Act of Congress passed June the 7th, 1832): that he entered the service of his country as an eighteen months man in the month of August, 1778, to the best of his recollection, in the County of Spotsylvania in the State of Virginia in a company commanded by Capt. John Benam. He entered as a substitute for his father, Anthony Arnold, who had been drafted "or upon whom the lot fell in his class." The first few months he served in the 3rd Virginia Regiment commanded by C. C. Matthews. He then marched to Williamsburg where he joined the 7th Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. James Junis or Cunis "which way the name was spelled he does not know". From Williamsburg he was marched to Richmond, "he recollects whilst at Richmond of seeing the Marquis de La Fayette, it was the first time he had ever seen him.' From Richmond he marched to Petersburg and from there he marched to Charleston. The troops while at Charleston were under the command of General Woodford and Dangerfield. He was in Woodford's Brigade. From there he was marched to Mountscorner, and from there to Philadelphia by way of Camden Courthouse. From there they marched to a place called Brookline and where again marched to the south to Savannah. His eighteen months' enlistment expired there so he again enlisted, this time in Washington's Corps of Horse under Captain John Lightfoot. He served with them until the battle of Cowpens, where he received Three wounds in said battle. After the battle the Light Horse marched to Charleston, thence to Savannah, thence to Camden and from there to the Peedee. His term of eighteen months' enlistment being up he was discharged and received his discharge from Col. William Washington. His whole service in the army of the United States was three years. 91 He served as a private. He has lost his discharge. He then gives the names of officers he remembers: Battle of Cowpens- --General Morgan, also General Pickens and Col. Howard; Captains Fauntleroy and Jameson in Col. Washington's troops; Maj. John Willis in Wayne's troops; before joining Col. Washington's troops he was transferred to the 17th Regiment commanded by Col.. Wm. Dangerfield, his captain's name was John Browning, the Brigade was commanded by Gen. Scott; he was with Wayne at Petersburg, Charleston and Big Peedee; he recollects General Thomas, Loman, and Lewis; in the 7th the major's name was John Thorn, and in the 17th, Maj. James Lewis. He has no documentary evidence of his service, part of it he can prove by John Grant and Sally Benning, his sister (who knows that he was in the war three years). He did send proof in 1833, the evidence of John Roche, but he understands that the papers which were directed to the Secretary of War at Washington City are lost or mislaid. He is not now able to prooure any further evidence from John Roche by reason of the fact that when John Roche vouched for him he lived in the state of Kentucky, now if he is living, he is in Fauquier County, Virginia, but cannot say whether he is dead or alive, probably dead as he was then in the 87th year of his age "and is now no doubt dead." He states he was born in Caroline County, Virginia, on the 24th of June, 1758. He has a record of his age in his own Bible in his house in Clarke County, Kentucky. After the war he lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, until 1803 when he moved to the state of Kentucky where be has lived ever since. He is known in his present neighborhood to David Hampton, Sac., Rev'd. John Alexander, Thacker Bush, George Hampton, Ezekiel Elkin, Lewis Grigsby and others who can testify as to his veracity and belief that he was a soldier of the Revolution. John Arnold signed his own name. John Grant or Gravit of Clarke County, Kentucky certified that he was seventy-nine years old, was well acquainted with John Arnold, that he resided in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, during the war, that he served in the same regiment with the said Join Arnold for about ten or twelve months, that he had always understood that John Arnold served about three years. He never heard anything to the contrary in Spotsylvania and he understood that he was wounded at the Battle of Cowpens. Sally Benning certified that she was sixty-nine years of age, was the sister of John Arnold, that during the Revolution she lived at the house of her father in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and that John Arnold entered the service from there, that he was absent from home for upwards of three years, and that she had always understood that he served three years as a soldier in the Revolutionary War and that this was always believed in the neighborhood. She signed her own name. State of Kentucky, Clarke County Circuit Court. September term, 1840. Richmond and Henry Arnold, proved in open court that the John Arnold who died on the 15th of July, 1840, was the identical John Arnold whose certificate for a pension at the $80 per annum was presented. Final payment was ordered by the court to Richmond Arnold, John Arnold `a heir and Administrator. John Arnold left no widow. Benjamin Arnold, #S2920 of Buckingham County, Virginia, to Warren County, Tennessee (Abstracted and Compiled by John Frederick Dorman from the National Archives and contributed with permission of the compiler by Ann A. Hennings) 31 Jan. 1833. Warren Co., Tenn. Benjamin (x) Arnold of said county, aged 70, declares he was drafted in Lawrence County, S. C., to go to guard Arrington's 92 Station in the upper part of South Carolina on Tugler River. He was under Capt. Ford and Col. Cleaveland and served three months. They were frequently engaged in scouting in search of Indians and a few times discovered a scouting Indian or a few Indians together and fired on them but never had anything like a general engagement. They also scouted after Tories who always fled on their approach. Shortly afterward he volunteered and joined the troops under Gen. Morgan near Cowpens at the residence of Charles Moore on Tiger River. He was in Capt. McDowel's company under Col. Cleaveland and Maj. James McDowel. He was in the battle of Cowpens which began early in the morning on 17 Jan. 1781 and saw Col. William Washington who commanded the American Light Horse. He marched with the prisoners to Beaty's Ford where the British under Cornwallis fired on them. He understood that a message was sent to Cornwallis informing him that if he did not desist all the British prisoners would be put to death and there afterward was no more firing. They then marched to Salisbury where he was discharged. He returned to his grandfather's with whom he resided in Lawrence Co., S. C., his father having died. His grandfather then moved to Henry Co., Va. and he accompanied him. About six weeks after he went to Henry County he substituted in the Spring of 1781 for three months for a man named Cox who had been drafted. He served in Capt. George Hairston's company and thinks --- Dillard was Lieutenant. They marched into North Carolina and his captain was the highest officer in command until they joined the army under Gen. Green on Deep River near Rudeley's Mill, a few days after the battle was fought There. Gen. Lafayette, or as he was commonly called by the soldiers, La Marquis, was also a commanding officer. He was in the regiment of Col. Perkins. They marched in pursuit of the British back into Virginia. He remained a Considerable time until discharged at Moppin Hill where Sen. Green then had his headquarters. He went to Amherst County where his uncle Hendrick Arnold resided. His uncle had just been drafted to march against the British and he substituted for him and marched in Capt. David Woodruff 's Company under Col. Merriweather, Maj. Samuel Higginbotham and Lieut. Brown. They marched toward Little York but received news of Cornwallis's surrender and returned to Amherst Court House where they were discharged. Since he considered the war over and lived 15 or 16 miles from the Court House, he did not go to get his discharge on the day appointed. On-this tour he served six weeks. He was born in Buckingham Co., Va., 28 Jan. 1762. The record was in his father's Bible but he does not know what has become of it. After the war he lived in Amherst County two years, in Henry County about 15 years, in Rowan Co., N.C. about five years, in Greenville Dist., S. C. 12 years, and then moved to Warren Co., Tenn. Benjamin Arnold of Warren Co., Tenn., private in company of Capt. Ford in regiment of Col. Cleaveland in South Carolina militia for A months from 1780, was placed on the West Tennessee pension roll at $31.66 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 25123 was issued 25 Nov. 1833. 93 Swem's Index: Continued from Vol. I, No., p. 65 (Contributed by Ann A. Hennings) Betty 2715 See Andrew W. KENTUCKY Logan County, Kentucky Records, continued from Vol. 1, Number 2, p. 51 Mrs. Foster B. Hammers, our member from Madisonville, Kentucky, visited the Courthouse in Logan County, and brought back many records which she has graciously 113 shared with this Association. Among the records sent to us were Marriages, some Deed abstracts, Tax Lists, Land Surveys and Court Order Book material that provides additional information regarding the Estate of John Arnold, deceased, whose wordly goods were appraised on The 23 September, 1806. Cf. pp. 46-47, Vol. I, No. 2, Arnold Family Quarterly. COURT ORDERS Book 4, p 10 "Logan County, Kentucky. July County Court. 1806. Ordered that Thomas Arnold take possession of the property of John Arnold, deceased, which he had in his possession when he died. Further ordered that the said Thomas Arnold, and Peyton Nowlin and Joshua Hurrah, his securities, enter bond for $2,000." Book 4, p 25 "Logan County, Kentucky. August County Court. 1806. On motion of Rachael Arnold, by her attorney, for leave to administer the Estate of John Arnold, deceased, overruled: Whereupon the party prayed leave to file exceptions to the opinion of the Court. Which exceptions, being produced, the Court rejected them." Book 4, p 29 "Logan County, Kentucky. August County Court. 1606. Ordered that Thomas Arnold be appointed Administrator of the Estate of John Arnold, deceased, and that he with Walter Wiatt, be examined and acknowledged and bond in penalty of $1,500 conditioned as the law directs." Book 4, p 90 "Logan County, Kentucky. (Date of Court not given) John Arnold, deceased. Two notes were allowed against the Estate of the said decedant. One to William Haggard and one to Elizabeth Bryant." Book 4, p 292 "Logan County, Kentucky. September Term, 1807, 3rd day. Circuit Court of Logan County, Kentucky. Rachael Arnold, Plaintiff, vs. Thomas Arnold, Defendant. A bill in chancery between Rachael Arnold and Anna Bryant and others. Rachael Arnold was acquitted at the time of her trial for perjury in the warrant. The Court refused the Defendant (?) liberty to read the bill he (?) offered which read in the words following: `To the humble Ninian Edwards, one of the General Court judges. Your orator, Rachael Arnold, states unto your honour, that as well as she recollects in the year 1780 she was married to one John Arnold, then living in the state of South Carolina, Ninety Six District and that she lived with the said John Arnold until she had two children by him, to wit, Nancy Arnold and John Hendrick Arnold, when the said John Arnold left your orator with her two children without support taking with him all of the property and that on your orator's being informed that some time last winter John Arnold was killed in the state of Kentucky near Russellville, your orator came to Logan County, Kentucky, where she found a Negro woman named Lucy, a Negro boy named Jack, and a Negro girl named Hilly, a waggon, 3 featherbeds, 2 horses, 4 cattle and 12 hogs in the possession of a woman by the name of Annie Bryant and some children who call themselves the widow and children of John Arnold, deceased.' Plaintiff lost and asked for a new trial and was overruled. Court asked Plaintiff to pay her bill of exceptions." Book 5, p 111 `Logan County, Kentucky. October County Court. 25th day, 1809. Rachael Arnold and John H. Arnold and Nancy Crocker by John Crocker, her husband... All complaintants against Thomas Arnold. Complaintants lost." 114 Note by Mrs. Foster B. Hammers: The file for Ordinary Cases dated for years 1807-1809 did not contain the bundle of papers for the Rachael Arnold-Thomas Arnold case. The years 1806-1808 seemed to be completely missing. The files for Equity cases for these same years were examined but these papers were not found either. Greenville County Deed Book 0, p 306, shows John Arnold selling the lands, one hundred and ninety nine acres, left him by his father, Benjamin Arnold (in above, will), to John Chandler in the year 1801. There are no further deeds for him in this county, indicating that he has left. Spartanburg County Deed Book L, pp. 148-149, shows John Arnold, Jr. buying 135 acres for $130 on the Lick Creek waters of the Enoree River on the 31st of December 1802. Witnesses to this instrument are James Wofford, John Crocker (his brother-in-law) and John Hamby, Jr. This land was an original grant to John Hamby, Sr. Then on the 29th of August, 1807, John H(endricks?) Arnold is selling the very same piece of land to Stoner and Herring for $130. The description of the land is identical. "Original grant to John Hamby." The witnesses to this instrument are John Crocker and William Hendrix (sp.) this latter probably a kinsman of his on his paternal grandmother's side, she being Ann Hendricks, the wife of Benjamin Arnold who died in Greenville after the signing of his will, 30 January, 1796. Both of John Hendricks Arnold's deeds, the grantee and the grantor, were recorded on the same day, 1 January,1808. He does not use the Junior after his name in the grantor deed for he now knows his Lather is reported to be dead. I have digressed from the records of Logan County, Kentucky, in order to clear up who some of these numerous John Arnolds are in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties, S. C. Elsewhere in this Issue, I will deal with Thomas Arnold, the Administrator of his brother, John Arnold's Estate, both as a son of Benjamin Arnold of Greenville County and as a Revolutionary soldier. We will keep publishing every issue until every last one has seen print. Mrs. Hammers, Mrs. Osteen (our member in Portageville, Mo.) and myself have pretty well established that our Arnold- Arrendale-Arundell-Arendell ancestors came from Virginia very, very early to North Carolina (our common ancestor Richard Arundell died in Granville Co., N. C. in 1758), Then some went from there to other parts of North Carolina and to South Carolina (Benjamin Arendell to Abbeville), while others went to Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. It certainly will be exciting and interesting straightening out this branch of the Arnolds. Look for Tax Lists and Census records of Logan County in our next issue. P. 867 Lewis P. Arnold is a native of Warren County, where he now resides, and was born October 3, 1825. His father, Willis Arnold, was born in 1794, in Culpeper County, Virginia. He married a Miss Elizabeth Potter, a native of Virginia. She died in 1857, aged sixty-five years. She left seven sons and five daughters: John, William, George, Lewis, James, Elijah, Noses, Nancy, Polly, Frances, Martha, and Elizabeth. Willis Arnold was a farmer. In his earlier days he was a soldier and served in the wars against the French and Indians on the Canadian frontier. He was a son of Benjamin Arnold who was of Swiss parentage. But little is remembered of him by his descendants, further than he was through life a quiet and unassuming farmer, and died in his native state--Virginia. Lewis F. Arnold remained with his parents until he attained the age of twenty years; he then entered the United States Army as a volunteer, and served for a time in the Mexican War; assisted in the storming of Vera Cruz, and was also in the engagement at the famous Cerro Gordo Pass, where he received a wound which disabled him for the United States service. He was soon discharged and returned to his home in Kentucky, where, on the 10th of February, 1848, he married Miss Julia A., a daughter of James Hendricks, of Warren County. She died October 26, 1881, leaving three children: America F., Lowring, and Luther. After his marriage Mr. Arnold purchased 100 acres of land and engaged in farming, which he continued until 1861. In October of that year, he, for the second time, joined the United States Army; was a member of Company A, of the Eleventh Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and for two years held the commission of chaplain of the regiment. He afterward, for one year, held the commission of lieutenant in Company I, of The Fifty-second Mounted Infantry. Upon his being discharged from the army, he returned to Kentucky, and again engaged in agricultural pursuits. Mr. Arnold has been successful; his farm of 200 acres is well kept and improved and very productive; he raises some good stock, but is principally engaged in the culture of grain and tobacco. As a minister of the gospel, Brother Arnold has not ceased to labor in the vineyard of his Master, and the flourishing little communities of Mount Zion, Mount Pleasant, New Hope and Bethlehem attest the efficacy of his zeal. He is a member of the order of K. of H., and is also a Master Mason in Bowling Green Lodge, No. 273. Politically he is a liberal Republican. 121 Warren County, Kentucky, Census of 1850 Place of Name Sex Age Birth L. P. Arnold M 23 Ky Julia A. Arnold F 22 Ky America F. Arnold) The English history of the Arnolds is very interesting, the family having descended from the Saxon kings, who used only one name. The name, Arnold, was the surname of our Saxon ancestors. There is an Arnold coat of arms, of which Mrs. Will Cunningham, of Wartrace, Term., has a copy. Great-great-great grandfather, Capt. Thomas Arnold of Virginia married a Miss Wish. They had eighteen children, who were called the "Immortal Eighteen". Thomas Arnold served as Captain in the Revolutionary War, and was retired and assigned to the "Regiment of Invalids" composed entirely of officers. He was given half pay, commissioned and bounty lands, by Act of Congress Aug. 14, 1776. Great-great grandfather, Samuel Arnold, one of the above eighteen, married Elizabeth Wright, also of Virginia; they had eight children, James, Eliza, Elisha, Daniel, John, Thomas, William, Elizabeth. He moved to Hamptonville, N. C. Great grandfather, James Arnold, one of the above eight children, first married Hannah Bonn of S. C.; his second wife was Margaret Bagby of Surry Co., N.C. They moved to Bedford County, Tenn,, and had nine children: James, Oliver, Thomas Martin, Louisa, Elizabeth, Lucinda, Martha Ann, Sophia, and Lamyra. The home was located near Bell Buckle or Shelbyville, Tenn. They, the great grand parents, are buried in a small enclosed plot of ground, on what is known as the John Cunningham place. Of these children, Thomas Martin Arnold became the grandfather. James Arnold married the widow, Fogleman of Shelbyville, Tenn. Martha Ann Arnold married Chas. Hickerson of Coffee Co., Term. Sophia Arnold married Stephen Chitwood of Bedford Co., Tenn. Oliver Arnold married Rachael Tarver of Augusta, Ga.., and they had one son, Oliver, who is the father of the Arnolds in California. Lucinda Arnold married James Cunningham. They had four children: Sallie married Dr. Farrar; Mattie married Mr. Halliburton; James married Maggie McCann; Frank married Delia Smith. Louisa Arnold married a Gray of Nashville, Tenn. Elizabeth Arnold married Robert Pety. Lamyra Arnold never married. Grandfather Thomas Martin Arnold married Nancy Ann Johnson of near Murfreesbcro or Bell Buckle Tenn. They had four children: James, Arabella, Elizabeth Margaret, Joseph. They moved to Belton, Texas, where the parents died and were buried. James, at sixteen years of age, enlisted in the Confederate Army and was in the 6th Texas Brigade and also served under Forrest, was captured and sent to Camp Chase Ohio, until the war ended, when he came back to Tenn., and sent for the rest of the family. They settled in Bedford Co. Arabella married Harrison Dyer. Bettie married I. H. White. Joseph married Bettie Davidson. Father, James Arnold, married Nannie Frances of Winchester, daughter of Col. Hugh Frances and Catherine Buchanan. They married in Shelbyville, Tenn. Their oldest child, Thomas, was born there, then they moved to Wartrace, Tenn., and bought a home, which remained in the family for sixty years. It is now out of print, and in order to get a copy it was necessary to ask University Microfilms to locate and microfilm a copy so that I might purchase a Xeroxographic copy. This fine firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will locate any out-of-print work and photoduplicate it for you for a surprisingly modest amount. This work is 212 pp. in length, including the Index. This book is not a genealogical study of the Ninety-six District, South Carolina Arnold family in the sense that we know and accept genealogical work today. It is a rambling book, the result of "thirty years of gathering data." This data consists of letters to and from various relatives of Mr. Arnold's, records from the then Bureau of Pensions (now these records are kept at the National Archives), copies of wills and "facts" known to the writer. As he admits, "the information is fragmentary." Mr. Arnold voices the hope that the younger generation coming along will continue in their search for the genesis and growth of the Arnold family in America. 125 The first chapter begins with the story of his life. William Hendrick Arnold was born 15 February, 1861, at Lisbon (union County), Arkansas, the son of David Saxon Arnold and Temperance Lucinda Arnold. Thus, Mr. Arnold's inheritance was Arnold on both sides of the house. He was brought up on farms of his father's first in Union and then in Nevada Counties, Arkansas. He attended Ansley Academy at Artesian, taught school while reading law with Warren and Mitchell, Attorneys, at Prescott, Arkansas. He was admitted to the bar in Prescott but moved to Texarkana and lived there when the book was published. He then lists the cases he had presented before the Supreme Court, his connections with building and loan associations, bar associations, law institutes and the SAR. He gives the facts of his two marriages, first to Miss Jessie Cook; secondly to Miss Kate Lewis. lie lists the issue of these two unions, five from the first and one from the second: Jodie Claypool Arnold, married Carl Smith, lived in Texarkana; Lucy Arnold, married Booker Ellis, lived in Texarkana; William Hendrick Arnold, Jr., a lawyer as was his father, attended school at Phillips-Exeter Academy, then on to Harvard for his B.A., winning a Rhodes Scholarship and took his M.A. at Oxford university in England, served in WWI as a Second Lieutenant, after the war he married Miss Grace Hendricks and lived in Texarkana; Ruth Arnold, married Allen Anderson Mcourdy and moved to Saginaw, Michigan; David Christopher Arnold, attended Phillips-Exeter as had his elder brother, studied at the University of the South, went into law as his father and brother before him, unmarried in 1935, lived in Texarkana; Richard Lewis Arnold, attended Phillips-Exeter, went on to Yale University where he was granted the B.A., and was entered upon a course of study in law at Harvard University at the time his father wrote. The next chapter is devoted to the author's father, David Saxon Arnold. He was born in Laurens County, South Carolina, the son of Ira Arnold and Polly Saxon. He attended Erskine College in his native state and moved to Arkansas in 1849 where in engaged in mercantilism and farming. His wife, Temperance Lucinda Arnold was born in Autauga Co., Alabama, end was the daughter of William Bidestone Arnold and wife, Lucinda Powell Hardin. David Saxon Arnold was a Veteran of the Civil War in the Confederate Army. Their children were: David Saxon Arnold, lived in Shreveport, Louisiana; Mary Lucy Arnold married J. S. Began, both deceased; William Hendrick Arnold (our author); Sallie T. Arnold, married Dr. Alphonzo Harris, both dead, Martha Arnold, married Israel Focht, lived in Sweetwater, Texas; John Thomas Arnold, unmarried, lived in Dallas, Texas; Henry Lee Arnold, died unmarried in Dallas Texas; Carrie Ella Arnold, married W. E. Barrow, died in Sweetwater, Texas, leaving husband and children; Robert Esterbrook Arnold, an engineer, died of a knife wound inflicted by a drunken Mexican, in Colina, Mexico; Clara Pressley Arnold, married Seaborn Cole, lived in Sweetwater, Texas. William Bidestone Arnold, Lather of Lucinda Temperance Arnold, and his wife, Lucinda Powell Hardin next engage our author's attention. W. B. Arnold was born in Green County, Kentucky about the year 1800, moved to Chambers County, Alabama. There he met and married Lucinda P. Hardin, after which they moved to Hempstead County, Arkansas, where W. B. Arnold died in 1847. His wife was born in Newton County, Georgia, in 1804, married to husband, W. B. Arnold, at Montevallo, Alabama about 1823. She died in 1878. Their children were: Sarah Elizabeth, who married Lawson Smith of union County, Arkansas; Mary Blanton Arnold, married William H. Beard of Hempstead County, Arkansas; Caroline M. Arnold, married David Carroll Ross 126 of Union County; Louiza Jane Arnold, died unmarried in Hempstead County; John Hardin Arnold, married Luvisa Baird in Titus County, Texas; Thomas Asbury Arnold, married Queenie Payne, Columbia County, Arkansas; William Edward Arnold, became an M.D., married Mary McCollum, in Hempstead County; Martha Arnold married William Brown Ross of Clark County, Arkansas, married again upon the death of her husband to Col.. W. T. Steel, moved to Oklahoma; Temperance Lucinda Arnold, who married David Saxon Arnold and became our author's mother. Very little is given in regard to the author's paternal grandfather, Ira Arnold, beyond that he was a native of South Carolina, a farmer, a Justice of the Peace for many years, & Mason, a Baptist and was born in the year 1791 and deceased in 1858. He was a three hundred pounder. His wife "went over two Hundred." Each one had to drive a mule and sit alone in a buggy as they were too stout to share a vehicle. According to the family record of Mrs. Daisy Mitchell Bagwell's mother, Mrs Susan Eliza (Arnold) Mitchell, the following are the vital statistics regarding the Ira Arnold family: Ira Arnold, born 25 December, 1791, died 1858, married in 1813. His wife, Mary "Polly" Saxon, born 23 October, 1796, died April, 1878. Their children: Ruth Cash Arnold, born 8 August, 1815, died ? unmarried. Sarah Saxon Arnold, born 27 August, 1817, married Dr. Clardy. Nancy Taylor Arnold, born 28 September, 1819, married Samuel Barksdale, (Cf. Barksdale Genealogy) died 3 October, 1860. Hendrick Howard Arnold, born 2 January, 1822 (came to Arkansas from Alabama and married 19 July, 1849, Ann H. J. Ross, whose mother was Temperance Arnold, daughter of Thomas Arnold and Mary Bidestone. Clarissa Arnold, born 10 April, 1824, married Dr. Pressley. Mary Arnold, born 28 April, 1826, married Isaac Henning. David Saxon Arnold, born 11 November, 1828, married Lucinda Temperance Arnold and became our author's parents. Thomas Jefferson Arnold, born 4 July, 1832 (married Mary Frances Coursen 11 October, 1863.) Joshua Lewis Arnold, born 19 November, 1834, Died 9 May, 1837 Susan Eliza Arnold, born 6 June, 1838. Died 25 August, 1876. Ira Arnold was the son of Hendrick Arnold, who was the son of Benjamin Arnold who died in Greenville County, South Carolina, in 1796. Hendrick. Arnold was born about 1763 according to the family record kept by William D. Sullivan, son of Temperance Arnold, daughter of Benjamin Arnold, Jr., son of Benjamin Arnold who died in Greenville County, S.C. in 1796. (A DAR paper has been filed that says he died 15 July, 1795. We know that he predeceased his father because of the terms of his father's will.) Hendrick Arnold married Ruth Howard Cash, daughter of Robert Howard Cash. They had two sons: William Arnold and Ira Arnold, whose family has just been discussed above. This William Arnold was mentioned in his grandfather's will in 1796 as heir to the dead Hendrick. He was called Squire William of Brewerton, S. C. and is said to have married Mary "Polly" Tierce, daughter of Robert Tierce, in his old age, a second or third marriage. His children did not approve of the marriage so he moved to Marietta in Cobb County, Georgia, where he built the Harmony Protestant Church for his son to preach in of a Sunday. He was noted for his hot temper and is said to have ridden all the way to Rockingham, Virginia, to the courthouse to prove he was not descended from Benedict Arnold. "Uncle Billy's" family has not been traced with the loving care of the other Arnolds 127 in the book. His children are given as Jefferson Arnold, who married a McCullough and moved to Mississippi; Hendrix, who was a Pedo Baptist preacher and married a Miss Briggs and settled down in Pickens County, S. C.; young Billy Arnold, married his cousin, Malinda Arnold and had two children, William who went West and Clara who married a Cheshire. In 1802 there had been a division of the Horse Creek lands of their father between William and Ira. Mr. Arnold at last gets to the root of the family tree; Benjamin Arnold of Greenville County, S. C. For his information about the family he relied upon the notes, papers, and record of William D. Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan stated that he had always understood that the Arnolds came from England to Virginia, and that from the oldest record he had, Philip Arnold, said to be the father of Benjamin Arnold, died 1796, was in Rockingham Co., Va. but that there were Arnolds in Amherst and Bedford Counties as well. He further said that Philip Arnold married a descendant of Anneke Jans Bogardus of New York City. His son, Benjamin Arnold, moved from Virginia to Petersburg on the Broad River in Georgia, in 1774, but finding the climate unhealthy moved to Greenville in S. C. He lived and died at a farm known as the Sally Pinson Farm on Horse Creek. His wife was Ann Hendrick of Virginia. Benjamin's will is given and then a few paragraphs which describe what became of each one of the children: William, his eldest son, died in Bedford County, Va. and left two heirs, Anderson and William Arnold. Edward was single and moved off to Kentucky. Hendrick Arnold, died, and his son William heired his part of the estate. Hendrick is buried at what is now called the Samuel Maddox place. Hendrick's daughter, Polly, married Lite Townshend and they moved to Logan County, Kentucky. John Arnold lived first in Laurens Co., S. C., then went to Tennessee where he was killed. Benjamin Arnold, Jr., raised his son, Ben. His Aunt Tempy Hamilton raised Rickerson, and Aunt Charity Martin took Lem Arnold. Thomas Arnold married Mary Bidestone and moved first to Kentucky, then to Dallas County, Alabama, where he lived thirteen miles above Selma on Mulberry Creek at a little station called Burnsville. Benjamin Arnold, Jr. (Mr. Sullivan's grandfather) married Kezziah Camp and they lived and died on Horse Creek in Greenville, S. C. Charity Arnold married Capt. George Martin, a captain in the Revolutionary War. They lived on Reedy River, Dunklin Township, Greenville, S. C. Temperance Arnold married Thomas Hamilton, a soldier of the Revolutionary War. They first settled at Cedar Hill, Greenville, S. C., but when their son-in-law, William Dunklin, moved to Lowndes Co., Ala., They moved out there with them. "In the years 1790 and 1806 there was an exodus of our people to Caldwell Co., Ky. near the mouth of the Cumberland River. After a few years they commenced to scatter from Ky. Some of them crossed the Mississippi River into Missouri and others crossed the Ohio River into Indiana and Illinois." Mr. Arnold then gives conflicting information regarding John Arnold's children, apparently still from Mr. Sullivan's notes as the information is in quotes, `John Arnold, who was killed in Tenn., wife's name was Annie, she and her Three Sons, Ben, Rickerson, and Len moved to Indiana.' (Cf. pp. 57-58, for these two versions.) Next, Mr. Arnold gives the family of Benjamin Arnold, Jr., born 30 July, 1769, married Kezziah Camp, born 20 May, 1777. Their children: Alston Arnold (b 23 June, 1804); Martin M. Arnold (b 9 Sept., 1808); Benjamin Arnold (b 22 Jan, 1818); Ann Hendrick Arnold (b 10 July, 1797); Temperance H. They had: Keziah Arnold, Anderson Arnold (married Betsey Parrish and had twelve children), Abijah Arnold (killed in the Civil War), Martin Arnold (accidently killed before the Civil War--died at Lizzie Glover's at Campbellton Ga.), Mary Arnold (married Baggett and had nine children), Imogogen (married Silman, had three or four children), Ben Arnold (married Dupree, had three or four children), Abbie Arnold (married a Pricket, lived in Alabama, had two children.) Robert Arnold married Mary Johnson of Greenville. She died after six months. Re was in Hampton's Legion and served with distinction during the whole Civil War. Kezziah married James Gaines. They lived near Uncle Martin's. Their children: Abbie Gaines (married Thad T. Ellison), Annie Gaines (married Benjamin Arnold, lived at Princeton in Laurens Co.). Editor's Note: Since this book contains far too much material to ever be covered in one issue, we will continue the review in our Summer Issue. I do, however, want to make a few comments at this time. Mr. William H. Arnold was a very fine old gentleman, upholding all that was best of the old school. He was not, in any sense of the word, a genealogist. Therefore, the material in this book, which is often hazy, contradictory, and undocumented, must be taken as clues only, and anyone who feels he or she descends through any of these lines must seek to document these lines with primary sources, such as deeds, court of equity files, tax lists and other sources. If this is not done Then your genealogy is not worth the paper it is written on and can even make researching, for one coming after you, more difficult. Genealogies made up from sources such as this are simply unacceptable by knowledgeable and competent authorities. An example of how the took is hazy and undocumented is found in the statement that Anne Arnold, supposedly nee, Hendricks, (wire of Benjamin Arnold, died 1796 in Greenville, S. a.), yet nowhere is the documentation for her maiden name given. An example of the contradiction found in The book is seen when we are told that Rickerson, Ben and Lem, the surviving children of John Arnold, who died in Tennessee (?), were raised by their Aunt and Uncle, but just a few lines further down we are told they went to Indiana with their mother. Neither statement is in any way documented. The Editor feels confident that the primary sources show that John Arnold left five children not three: John M. Arnold and Nancy (wife of John Crocker) 129 by the first wife (?), Rachael; three children by the second wife(?), Annie Bryant perhaps named Rickerson, Lem, and Ben. Much work needs to be done on this line to straighten it out, and contradictory statements such as those found in this book and disappearing Court of Equity files do not help matters. We gave Thomas Arnold's Revolutionary record in the form of a review in our Winter Issue, p. 81. We are indebted to our member, Mrs. Frank C. Beard of Lovington, New Mexico, for sending us The Bible Record of this fifth son of Benjamin Arnold of Greenville, S. C.
