To Mrs. Hazel Arnold MacIvor our Historian- Genealogist and Editor and to Mrs. Ann Arnold Hennings, our Corresponding Secretary, who have done an outstanding job, are due our sincere thanks for a job well done. This has been a labor of love and devotion to Arnold genealogy as no one has received a penny in payment. Our membership is now more than a hundred, and the Quarterly goes into twenty-seven states including Hawaii, and also to ten State Libraries. Since our members now exceed a hundred, let each of us be a committee of one and secure additional members and double or triple our membership in the coming year. Send the names to Mrs. Hennings, who will send them an application. We are in need of volunteers, very badly, to assist Mrs. Mac Ivor, in typing and keeping records, and also, cutting stencils for the quarterly, Mrs. Hennings needs help in handling some correspondence and keeping records of the members. Won't you please volunteer your services. Edwin A. Arnold, President 133 The Arnold Family Association of the South Quarterly is published each Fall (August 1), Winter (November 1), Spring (February 1)., Summer (May 1) at 2482 Eaton Gate Road, Lake Orion, Michigan 43035. All contributions for publication or comments to the Editor, Mrs. Hazel Arnold MacIvor should be sent to the above address. Purpose: The purpose of the Arnold Family Association of the South is to bring into contact with one another all those who are researching Arnold and allied families, who either originated in the South, or came through it and stayed long enough to leave records. We hope to do this by publishing an Arnold Family Magazine, Quarterly, which will contain records of a private and public nature on the local, state, and national level. Our ultimate purpose is to publish an Arnold Family History containing as many branches of the Arnold Family as can be documented. To this purpose the Arnold Family Historian- Genealogist will accept, evaluate, file, preserve, and possibly publish records as they are received. Publications: The Arnold Family Association at present publishes only its Quarterly. Other publications will be announced as they are projected. Membership: All individuals regardless of surname, libraries or societies may apply for membership which is on a yearly basis,, beginning on 1 August of one year to 31 July of the next year. membership dues are $6.00 annually. Membership entitles one to receive the Association's Quarterlies free of charge. Quarterlies are $2.50 each to non-members, as long as they last. All members, other than Libraries or Societies, are required to complete applications and fill in pedigree charts to earliest known ancestor. Requests should be made to Ann A. Hennings, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia, 22043. Please make out check or money order to Arnold Family Association of the South. No cash, please. Holdings: The Arnold Family Association will place all of its records, publications, books, etc. in the hands of its Historian-Genealogist. In the event of his/her death, the surviving officers will decide the place of repository. Genealogical Inquiries: The Arnold Family Association keeps a record of all members' surnames in its files. Members will be furnished upon request, if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope, the names and addresses of others working on similar families. It will also furnish lists of genealogists (in most cases supplied by Archives in Southern states), but it cannot assume responsibility for nor guarantee the nature and accuracy of work done by any such genealogist. Editorial Policy: Neither the Editor, or the Arnold Family Association of the South and/or the members of the Editorial Staff, assume any responsibility for error of fact, or opinion, expressed by contributors. It is our earnest desire to publish only reliable source material of a genealogical nature. Materials for publication are welcome and should be sent to the Editor. Please type such materials or send xerox copies of original records. 134 From the Editor's Pen: Since last issue our membership has topped the 100 mark We are growing by leaps and bounds . A larger membership means more work To date, Edwin Arnold, Ann Hennings and myself have done everything ourselves. This, of course cannot continue. We have spouses, children, homes and other jobs that make rightful demands upon us . We must have help or this wonderful venture, The Arnold Family Association, will come to an end. We badly need typists to help in cutting stencils for the Quarterly, to type pedigree charts and. family group record sheets, as well as to assist with the correspondence of the Association, Won't you please write our President, Edwin A, Arnold, today and tell him you'll be proud to help carry on the Arnold Family Association by volunteering for a job, Thank you so much, Our membership dues have been increased from $4.00 to $6.00 per year, occasioned by rising costs in printing the Quarterly. Even at $6.00 per year we are getting the most genealogical research for the least amount of money that we will ever get All persons joining the Association before July 31, 1971 will still only pay $4 00. and membership will be retroactive to August 1970 and make members eligible to receive the first four Quarterlies, as long as they last. All memberships expire July 31, 1971. and must be renewed by August 1, 1971. A renewal slip will be found on page 134 for your convenience. Send it in. Since last issue, we have had several members respond to our invitation to endow their favorite repositories with gift subscriptions. The following members have donated memberships to these institutions: The Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois gift of Mr. William H. Arnold of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Texas State Genealogical Library of Ft. Worth, Texas -- gift of Mrs. Ora T. Norvell of Hereford, Texas; Rowan Public Library of Salisbury, North Carolina -- gift of Mrs. Ruth Baker Moody of Clarkston, Georgia; Milan Library of Milan and Jackson Madison County Library, both of Tennessee -- gifts of Mr. Howard L. Arnold of Jackson, Tennessee; and the Sutro Branch of the California State Library, at San Francisco, California -- gift of our President, Mr. Edwin A. Arnold, We need to get our Quarterly into the State Archives or State Libraries in Tennessee; Alabama. Kentucky, Arkansas, North Carolina and Mississippi. Won't someone in each of these states give a subscription to the above named repositories? We have had several donations: Mr . Howard L . Arnold enriched our treasury by $25,00; Mr. Edwin A. Arnold, our President, has donated $6.00 as has our member Mrs. Mertie Harris; Mrs. Blanchard H. Smith donated $2.00. We thank each and every one of you. We invite those of you who cannot give of your time, to please consider endowing us with a generous gift to help keep us "afloat". We have had so many nice comments on our Editorial efforts that we thought we would like to share a few with you: Mrs. Edna Perry Deckler of the Texas State Genealogical Society wrote, "Your Quarterly is just excellent!" Laura M. Pulley a very able genealogist in her own right, wrote, "The Arnold Family Association Quarterly is a wonderful idea! It deserves to live and grow," Mr. James M. Edwards, former President and present Board Member of the Georgia Genealogical Society, writes, "Your Quarterly is an excellent one -- well balanced and well- documented." Mrs. Ruth Baker Moody has written both the President and the Editor that she is very impressed with our Quarterly. So the comments come in. Thank you all. 135 A few words are in order in regard to members' communications to the Association. In order to expedite matters and cut down on the amount of work the officers have to do, we are asking you please to observe the following procedures: 1) Send all records to the Editor, Mrs. Hazel Arnold MacIvor. If you send them to Mrs. Hennings, then she must forward them to the Editor, which occasions needless postage and handling. The Editor also earnestly requests that when you send in records: a) Mark them clearly with your, name and address; b) Keep records from different states on separate sheets of paper for ease in filing data by states; c) Keep letters and data separate as they are filed separately. 2) All checks or money orders must be made out to the Arnold Family Association of the South, not to Mrs. Hennings or Mrs. Mac Ivor. 3) Any inquiry to the' officers of the Association must be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope; otherwise, the envelope and stamp must come out of the Association's funds. Due to the press of business, replies to inquiries might be slow, but we do try to answer every letter. The life of this Quarterly depends on the records we receive for publication. We cannot continue without records of every kind. If you have been meaning to send us your records but have been putting it off, don't delay another day. Without your records, we cannot exist. Please send them to us today. We need Bible records, old letters, diaries, family memoirs, family stories, family genealogies, census records, military records, estate records, tax records, deed abstracts, land grants and any other type of records you might have. You will receive credit when the records are published. Time does not permit us to write and thank each person who sends records individually, so please permit us to extend to all who have sent records, or are planning on sending them, our warm and most heartfelt thanks. Mrs. Marian Ledgerwood of Houston, Texas has volunteered to become our Index Chairman. She is hard at work indexing our first volume, which is comprised of the first four issues. She is being ably assisted by President Edwin A. Arnold. The Index will consist of four parts: 1) Arnolds, by first name; 2) all other variations of the surname Arnold, by both first and last names; 3) all other surnames, by both first and last names; 4)place names. The Index will be completed by August 1, 1971, and should prove to be a great help in quickly locating items of interest. True to the old adage, "If you want something done, give it to a busy person," is Marian Ledgerwood's generous offer to cut the stencils for the fourth Quarterly. She spent the better part of April at this task. The officers and members of the Arnold Family Association extend her their warm thanks. The greatest benefits from membership in any family association are not realized until it has been in existence two or three years. Slowly, sometimes almost imperceptibly, missing dates, names, and places begin to fill in, and family lines are drawn more clearly. Pursuant of this objective, we trust that the abundance of records we print each quarter are clearing up questions you've had. We invite you to correspond with the Editor and confirm, refute or question any statement appearing in these columns. If it helps straighten out anyone's line, we'll be happy to be "wrong". 136 Members will note a lack of Virginia material in this issue, The reason for this is that we are planning a big Virginia issue the first of August. Look for the conclusion of Swem's Index, Fauquier Co. Index to Deeds and. Wills as well as many, many other Virginia records. And-now, may-each and every one of you have a wonderful summer blessed with good health, happiness and fruitful ancestor researching. Hazel Arnold MacIvor Meet Our Members: This column will take the form, this issue, of a list of all of our members to date, their earliest known Arnold ancestors and the geographic areas where members are researching. It is hoped this list will enable members who are working on similar problems to contact each other. Members are listed in the order in which they joined the association. 1. Showing the exact connection and giving the complete line and lineage of the Drusilla Arnold ancestors and descendants in perfect order from Alfred the Great, born 849 A.D., down to the last child of the family up to October, 1931) by Leonard Wilson Arnold and Ethel Zwick Luckey. (Privately published by the Reverend Leonard W. A. Luckey, Ph. D., D.D.) (Contributed by Kathy Van Drew.) An excerpt: Samuel and Elizabeth Arnold It has been well and authoritatively established that Samuel Arnold of Somerset County, Pa. was a member of the family of Arnolds of Rhode Island and that he left there at an early age and date and went into the Cumberland valley of Maryland, where his son Samuel was born, March 6, 1775. By the redistricting of lands he and his wife Elizabeth became citizens of Bedford and Somerset counties in Penna. where they lived and reared a family of nine children, consisting of three sons, Samuel, Joseph and Daniel and six daughters, Rachel, Margaret, Elizabeth, Easter, Ann and Catherine. For clarity of location, it should be said that Bedford County was formed of a part of Cumberland County Mar. 9, 1771, and Bedford made the county-seat. Cumberland township then became a part of Bedford County, and its name was changed to Cumberland township. In 1772 (three years before the child Samuel was born) the tax records show that there were only twenty-seven persons who held land in the township and paid taxes and that Samuel Arnold's name heads the list. In 1785, Londonderry township was formed from the south-western portion of Cumberland Valley township. This redistricting left Cumberland Valley township 144 occupying most all the great valley southward to the Maryland line from Bedford, Somerset was formed of a part of Bedford County April 17, 1779 with Somerset the county seat. Southhampton township is in the extreme southeastern corner of Somerset Co. Gleaning the tax records of those paying taxes there previous to 1785, we find the names of Samuel Arnold and also Jacob Plumb who was then a freeman and sing but who soon married and brought forth a daughter Apr, 3, 1793. This daughter (there were other children) was named Elizabeth and in time became Samuel Arnold wife, and they were the father and mother of Drusilla Arnold of Wayne and Medina Counties, Ohio, According to the records of Somerset County, Commonwealth of Pa. in the recorders office at Somerset, the children and heirs of Samuel Arnold, Sr. were Samuel; Joseph; Daniel; Rachel married. James Jones; Margaret - unmarried; Elizabeth married John Trimble; Easter - unmarried; Ann - unmarried; Catherine married Aaron Porter of Trumbull County, Ohio. (J. Donald Lohr, recorder of Somerset County, made true and correct copies of deeds and records Jan. 22, 1931 and gave to treasurer of Arnold - Luckey family.) Samuel Arnold (1775-1847) of Sharon Center, Ohio was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Arnold of Somerset Co., Pa. He was born in Cumberland Valley, Somers Co.. March 6, 1775. one of a family of nine children..:----He was given a good education and named after his father, with whom he spent much of his time in his you but some time was spent at the village blacksmith of a Mr. Jacob Plumb, where he learned the art completely. It was on this wise that Samuel first met his future wife in the person of the little newly-born babe of Jacob Plumb when he was 18 years and 27 days of age. It was in the blacksmith shop on April' 3, 1793 when the child was born, and `the father of the child invited him in to see the little stranger. As Samuel looked upon her, the father jokingly said, "Who knows, friend Samuel, but that she may become your wife some day. A love story of her "growing up" days -- Samuel loved Elizabeth with a gracious, glowing, tender and ardent affection. By his every word and act for many long years he showed his living admiration for her and his desire to have her for his own, They were married in Somerset Co.; Pa. May 13, 1812. Their children were: (1) Margaret b. Nay 19, 1813, died Nov. 13, 1847; (2) Daniel b. April 9, 1815; (3) Samuel b. July 19, 1817; (4) Drusilla b. May 2 1820, d. Mar. 6, 1885; (5) Eve b. Jan. 2, 1823, d. June 19, 1899; (6) Emanuel b. Nov. 2, 1825; (7) Nathaniel b. Mar. 11, 1828; (8) Elizabeth b. Nov. 2, 1831, d. Oct. 12, 1898; (9) Sarah Anne b. Aug. 1, -1833; (10) Joseph b. Ear. 20, 1337. There are to be seen now in the family burial lot on the Samuel Arnold farm in Sharon Center, Ohio three tombstones which mark the graves of Samuel and Elizabeth Arnold and their first daughter, Margaret. The inscriptions are very dim; but the official records of Medina County, Ohio and Somerset County, Pa, give the following: Samuel Arnold, b, March 6, 1775; d. Dec. 23, 1847 Elizabeth Plumb Arnold, b. April 3, 1793; d. March 26, 1879 Belonged to Reformed Church. 145 Drusilla Arnold, born in Wayne County, Ohio May 22, 1820, soon after the parents came into the county and state, married in her parents' home in Sharon Center, Ohio Feb. 11, 1841 to George a. Luckey. George was son of Andrew Luckey (1781-1856) and the grandson of Robert Lucky (1753-1797), who came to America in 1753. Robert Lucky resided in the counties of Cumberland, Westmoreland and Washington, Pa. Andrew was born on Christmas Day in 1781. Later, he found his way into Ohio and also found him a wife. It was there in Wayne Co. that George W. Luckey was born on Hay 14, 1822. George was strong and health, attractive, witty, a good athlete and a very hard worker. Upon the first call of the Governor for volunteers, he tendered himself and his services' as a volunteer, being mustered in at Indianapolis, Ind. July 11, 1863 iii Co. 5, Battalion Regiment 107. Here follows a certified copy of his own record: My wife and I were born about one mile apart. I was born in Wayne County, Ohio, on the 14th day of May, 1822; moved with my parents to Medina Co., Ohio when about seven or' eight years of age, and when about twelve or thirteen years old my mother died. My father then sold out and entered land in Adams Co., Ind.. where he soon afterwards (1838) settled, and I lived there one year. I then went back to Medina Co. (1839) where I had a sister living, and `made my home with her husband and with `his brother until I was married, which took place in the month of February,:A.D. Feb. 11, 1841. I then rented my father-in-law's farm for three years, and the next year after my time was up, I made preparations and moved in 1848 to Adams Co., Ind. and with my little family settled on 40 acres of land (in the woods), which my father gave me in Sec. 31, Township 28 where we resided until 1855. I then bought the quarter section in Sec. 30, where we lived until the death of my dear wife, Drusilla, whose death occurred on the 6th day of March A.D. 1885. May God give me strength to bear up. Decatur, Ind. Aug. 8th, 1886 George W. Luckey George W. Luckey died on Nov. 16, 1886. On March 6, 1885, Drucilla passed away, and he died Nov. 16, 1886. Both are buried at Salem Cemetery. They worked and worshipped in the Evangelical Church at Decatur until their death. 146 NORTH CAROLINA At various periods in our country history, certain states have played the role of "gateways" to other parts of the new and beckoning land. Such a role was North Carolina's in the period 1750 - 1825. Arnolds came pouring across the frontiers from Perquimans in the East to Wilkes County in the West. And th Arnolds that came spelled their names in a variety of ways: Arnal, Arnel, Arnold, Arendel, Arundell, Arrendale and even Orindell, One branch of the Arnold family (that spelled its name variously as Arundell, Arrendale, Arendell and Arnold) apparently had its beginnings in Virginia. For this reason, we list the Swem's Index references to Arundells, as well as those found in George Cabel Greer's "Early Virginia Immigrants" (Richmond, W.C. Hill Printing Co., 1912), p. 13, before beginning our story in North Carolina. (All data contributed by Editor, Hazel Arnold MacIvor, unless otherwise noted.) (Nothing- is known of what became of Sarah, Rebeccah and Mary Arundell, the daughters of Richard Arundell.) Editor's Note: Mr. Manley provided little documentation, but using his data as clues, we were able to verify certain of his conclusions with the following references. Will of Richard Arendell, #86 (Loose Wills) probated 1762, naming Ellinor as his wife; sons, William, James and Thomas and daughters Sarah, Rebeckah and Mary; and grandson, Richard, son of James. Granville County, N.C.: Worth S. Ray in Colonial Granville and Its People (Baltimore, Southern Book Co., 1956), P. 304 says that in a rare list of the earliest settlers of Granville County, N.C. were the Arnolds. We give here a selected listing of colonial militia men in Granville in 1754. We include names other than Arnolds because persons of these names went with the Arnolds to counties in North Carolina, to South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, 148 and Kentucky, and perhaps other places as well, and serve as valuable clues in identifying Arnolds. I believe they were first cousins: John Arnold, Woodford Co., Ky. (1734-1810) was son of Nicholas and wife, Margaret. John Arnold (b. ? -1828) was son of James Arnold, Sr. and wife, Martha. This Logan Co., Ky. John Arnold may have 176 married twice: (1) _______Johnson; (2) Susanna _______ (Editor's note; Mrs. Rebecca Bouldin says Hughes, daughter of Rowland Hughes, of. My records show him with two children: Isaac, who m. in 1795 to Anne Andrews; Joseph, who married Frances Drumwright. Some of his children went to Tennessee (some of these may be the Tennessee Arnolds spoken of in your winter issue). Then, I'm wondering if the children listed for John Arnold and Susanna Hughes could not be the second set of children. At least this might be worth considering. From the enclosed pages, showing what records I have on James and his son, Elisha Arnold, you can see how I arrived at the above answer. Lewis Arnold Nicholas Arnold James Arnold Sr. m. BOOK REVIEW William Hendrick Arnold, "The Arnold Family" (Reviewed by Hazel Arnold MacIvor). Conclusion. We have traced the ancestry of William Hendricks Arnold (according to his account) back to Benjamin Arnold, born ca. 1719, Virginia (?), died 1796, Greenville Co., South Carolina. We then proceeded in Vol. I, No. 3, to trace the descendants of each of his children as fully as Mr. Arnold gave them. His eldest son, William Arnold, was deceased at the time Benjamin Arnold made his will. He had two heirs, Anderson and William, Jr. Anderson is said to have gone to North Carolina, and we are given nothing further on him. William Arnold, Jr. is credited with marrying Nancy Berry (daughter of Hudson Berry) and having four children: (1) Elizabeth b. 23 Jun. 1798, married Silas Gaines; (2) Lawson T. Arnold, b. 1800, d. 1891, m. Mary Woodruff Machem, 1827; (3) Milly (Amelia) Arnold, m. Billy Mahaffey; (4) Clarissa, b. 5 Sep. 1804, m. Rev. Nathaniel Gaines. These statements are said to be based on letters from a Mrs. Sherard, of Hendersonville, N.C. Editor's Note: Our member, Miss Sara M. Nash of Laurens County, South Carolina, descends through Amelia Arnold, who married William Mahaffey, and she has traced William Arnold's father to Samuel Arnold, b. 1750, Spotsylvania County, South Carolina, died 5 Dec. 1831 in Surry County, North Carolina, m. Elizabeth Wright, b. 1754, Prince William County, Virginia. Samuel Arnold and Elizabeth Wright married 5 September, 1771, at Fauquier County, Virginia. Mr. Toney Arnold Hardy wrote, in his work, "No Compromise With Principle" that Anderson Arnold (son of William Arnold, Sr., died in Bedford County, Virginia, before his father, Benjamin Arnold, d. 1796, in Greenville County, South Carolina) married Mary Parish and had Keziah, Imogene, Abijah, Ann 179 (m. M. J, Hollis), Benjamin, James, Willis and Lula. You will note that these are essentially the same children as Judge Arnold credits to Anderson Arnold, son of Alston Arnold and his wife Nancy Thomason, The dates in Judge Arnold’s book are wrong, If Alston Arnold and Mary Thomason married 12 Nov, 1830, then their eldest son, Anderson, could not have had children in time to fight in the Civil War. Mrs. Sara Sullivan Ervin, in her article on the Arnolds in the Greenville News, 5 May 1940, says William’s wife's name was Sarah, while Toney Arnold Hardy says his wife was Mary Tierce. Obviously, a great deal of work needs to be done on this branch of the family. Edward, the second son of Benjamin and Anne Arnold, is given short shift and said to have remained single and to have moved to Kentucky. See Vol. I, No, 1, pp, 19 & 20. Edward Arnold, Jr., bought 200 acres of land in Spartanburg, on the north side of the Enoree River, "the plantation where the said Arnold now lives". Then Edward Arnold, Jr. sold 345 acres on the north side of the Enoree River "where the said Edward Arnold, Sr. now lives". Then, in Vol. I, No. 3, pp. 110-111, Edward Arnold and Catran, his wife, sell 500 acres on both sides of the Enoree River to John Cantrall being the place where Edward Arnold now lives". Also, Edward Arnold sells 40 acres lying on the north side of the Enoree River to Henry Ernest. Leonardo Andrea’s notes in Vol. 1, No, 2, showed an Edward Arnold received 180 acres as a Revolutionary Soldier bounty, in 96 District, on the 8 Mar. 1788 and he or another Edward Arnold received 329 acres on the Enoree River in 96 District on 3 Jan. 1791. It is too early in our investigation to state with any degree of confidence who this Edward Arnold, Sr. was, but it seems, most certainly, that Edward Arnold, Jr. was the son of Benjamin Arnold (d. 1796) of Greenville, since Benjamin witnessed son Edward’s earliest deed in Spartanburg County. It should be remembered that, in these early times, the terms, Senior and Junior, did not signify a father and son, but rather an elderly and younger man of the same name Benjamin's third son was Hendrick Arnold whose immediate descendants were given above: William and Ira Arnold. Ira, as was stated became the father of David Saxon Arnold, who was the father of Judge Arnold, our author. William’s descendants were very sketchily set forth by Judge Arnold and were included last issue. John Arnold, fourth son of Benjamin, Sr., killed near Russellville, Kentucky in 1807, and according to the controversial stories regarding him, either had five children: John H. Arnold and Nancy Crocker, nee Arnold, by his first wife, Rachael: Lem, Ben and Rickerson by his second wife (?) Annie Bryant --or he had only three sons by Annie Bryant. (Rachael Arnold was acquitted of perjury, so we can safely assume her story was substantially correct.) Of the descendants of these five children, we are given nothing. The fifth son of Benjamin Arnold, Thomas Arnold, can be traced quite documentarily. His Revolutionary records are given in Judge Arnold’s book, pp. 116-119. He served under Captains Ridgeway and Martin for a period of about thirty months, entirely in South Carolina, at the Battles of Long Canes and Cowpens,* He lived in 96 District at the time of his enlistment and after his discharge. Later, he lived about twenty years in Logan County, Kentucky, * p. 120 — "Description of service - N. Carolina Cont’l." does not seem to agree with the other records. 180 and then moved to Autauga County, Alabama, where he died on 23 March, 1834. His widow, Mary " ? " (our member, Mrs. Beard, says Bidestone, as does Judge Arnold, but I do not know what evidence either used) made application for her widow’s pension 18 Jan., 1854, as a resident of Dallas County in Selma, Alabama. Thomas Arnold stated he was born in Buckingham Co., Virginia, and that the record of his age was lost, so the record of his, his wife’s, and children’s ages must have been made, or taken from another source, between the time Thomas Arnold applied for his pension and the time his wife, Mary " ? " applied for her widow’s pension (at which time she submitted a record leaf torn from a Bible with Arnold — Ross data written on both sides). Our member, Mrs. Frank Beard, descends through Temperance Arnold, who married Peter Ross on 15 August 1804. Peter and Temperance Ross, nee Arnold, children are given on the same Bible record sheet. They are listed as Thomas A. Ross, b. 4 July 1805; Mary Ross. b, 6 September, 1807; Susan Ross, b. 20 April 1810; Lucinda Ross, b. 4 August 1812; Andrew J, Ross. b. 25 November 1814. Temperance Arnold Ross is Mrs. Beard’s G.G. Grandmother. The issue of the youngest son, Benjamin, were given last issue. Charity Arnold, apparently the eldest daughter (named before sister, Temper— ance), married Captain George Martin, who had served in the Revolution. Their children were Nancy Martin who married Light (Lite) Townsend -— she lived only about six weeks after her marriage; Temperance married (1)" ? " Smith and (2) William C. Gunnells of Fairview, Greenville Co., S.C. The youngest daughter, Temperance Arnold, married Thomas Hamilton. They moved to Lowndes County, Alabama. They had two daughters: Ann Hendrick Hamilton, who married William Dunklin; Peggy Hamilton married Charles Lowery. In addition to tracing his ancestry back to Benjamin Arnold and Ann Hen- dricks (?) and giving the immediate descendants of his ancestral parents, Judge Arnold also gives the descendants of many of Benjamin Arnold’s posterity. These are too numerous to list, but I will mention them in passing, in case our readers can possibly make a connection. The children of Dr. W. E. Arnold and his wife, Mary Mc Collum: John H. Arnold who married (1) Luvisa Baird and (2) Mrs. Mary Burk, nee Sharman; Dr. Hendrick Howard Arnold and wife, Ann H. J. Ross; William D. Sullivan who married (1) Elizabeth Hambert, (2) Harriet G. Hambert, (3) Mary E. Quarles; and Col. R. B. Arnold. Other collateral lines are presented; Saxon, Allen, Barksdale, Bacon, etc. with ancestral lines, documents and miscellaneous data. Interestingly, other Arnold lines are included in his book, which Judge Arnold could not connect to his family, of which the following seem of greatest interest: Arnolds of Howard County, Arkansas — J.C. Arnold became County Judge of Sevier Co., Arkansas; B.F. Arnold, a lawyer in Nashville, later a representa- tive from Miller County, Ark.; W. W. Arnold, lawyer from Texarkana, Texas; W. H. Arnold at Waldo, Texas; Arnolds at Atlanta, Texas and Ouachita County, Texas; R. W. Arnold, in Merchandising in Texarkana, Texas; George M. Arnold, representa- tive from Miller County, Ark. This letter to Judge Arnold from Grantland Rice is very interesting: 181 "...My great grandfather was Isaac Arnold of Mecklenburg Co., Va., who married his cousin, also an Arnold. Their children were Spencer Arnold, married seven times, settled in Texas, locality unknown; John Arnold, married Elizabeth Tomlin— son, settled in Nottaway Co., Virginia. One son, Benjamin Lee Arnold was presi- dent of the Oregon Agricultural College for years; Joseph Arnold, married twice, died at Boydton, Virginia. Raised his family there; Rev. Isaac M, Arnold, married twice, Methodist preacher, Virginia Conference; Susan Arnold, married a Piper, had two daughters; Hartwell Arnold married Mary M. Harper, had four sons and three daughters -- Thomas H. Arnold, merchant in Memphis, Tennessee -- Benja- min W. Arnold, professor at Vanderbilt University -- Rev. J. D. Arnold, Methodist preacher, North Carolina Conference" (other four children not named). In view of the vast amount of undocumented material, we would all be well— advised to sift the data in this book for clues only, and try to obtain substantia- tion for these lines from national, state and county sources. In some instances, certain lines would appear to have to be entirely researched in order to be established. As Judge Arnold bade us, we must take up the work and carry it forward, proud to set the record straight and uphold the truth always, as pace- setters in an emerging age of scientific genealogical study. "The Bible teaches genealogy; the Old Testament glories in it and the New Testament begins with it. Not only does Holy Writ encourage the search for ancestry and the preservation of its history, but a penalty is attached to those who find it not. In Nehemiah 7:64 we read, 'These sought their register among those who were reckoned by genealogy but it was not found; therefore they were as polluted, put from the priesthood." Nellie F.
