All contributions for publication or comments to the Editor, Mrs. Hazel Arnold MacIvor, should be sent to the above address. Purpose: The purpose of the Arnold Family Association of the South is to bring into contact with one another all those who are researching Arnold and allied families, who either originated in the South, or came through it and stayed long enough to leave records. We hope to do this by publishing an Arnold Family Magazine, Quarterly, which will contain records of private and public nature on the local, state, and national level. Our ultimate purpose is to publish an Arnold Family History containing as many branches of the Arnold Family as can be documented. To this purpose, the Arnold Family Historian-Genealogist will accept, evaluate, file, preserve, and possibly publish records as they are received. Publications: The Arnold Family Association at present publishes only its Quarterly. Other publications will be announced as they are projected. Membership: All individuals regardless of surname, libraries or societies may apply for membership, which is on a yearly basis, beginning on 1 August of one year to 31 July of the next year. Membership dues are $6.00 annually. Member- ship entitles one to receive the Association’s Quarterlies free of charge. Quarterlies are $2.50 each to non-members, as long as they last. All members, other than Libraries or Societies, are required to complete applications and fill in pedigree charts to earliest-known ancestor. Requests should be made to Ann A. Hennings, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia, 220433. Please make check or money order to Arnold Family Association of the South. No cash, please. Holdings: The Arnold Family Association will place all of its records, publi- cations, books, etc. in the hands of its Historian-Genealogist. In the event of his/her death, the surviving officers will decide the place of repository. Genealogical Inquiries: The Arnold Family Association keeps a record of all members’ surnames in its files. Members will be furnished upon request, if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope, the names and addresses of others working on similar families. It will also furnish lists of genealogists (in most cases supplied by Archives in Southern states), but it cannot assume responsibility for nor guarantee the nature and accuracy of work done by any such genealogist. Editorial Policy: Neither the Editor, or the Arnold Family Association of the South and/or the members of the Editorial Staff, assume any responsibility for error of fact, or opinion, expressed by contributors. It is our earnest desire to publish only reliable source material of a genealogical nature. Materials for publication are welcome and should be sent to the Editor. Please type such materials or send xerox copies of original records. 2 THE ARNOLD FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF The SOUTH President: Edwin Albert Arnold 1341 West Hammer Lane Stockton, California 95207 Historian-Genealogist, Editor Hazel Arnold MacIvor 2481 Eaton Gate Road Lake Orion, Michigan 48035 Secretary-Treasurer: Ann Arnold Hennings 6600 Placid Street Falls Church, Virginia 22043 From the Editor’s Pen: This issue is our "Happy Birthday" Quarterly, We are one year old today! The President, Edwin Albert Arnold, the Secretary-Treasurer, Mrs. Ann Arnold Hennings and your editor, Hazel Arnold MacIvor, are gratified beyond our wildest dreams at the progress and accomplishments this Association has made during the past year. Much of the success is due to the members who have painstakingly read and copied records and have sent them in to be published. New officers have been appointed and are ready to take up their duties. Mrs. Clerissa Tatterson has volunteered to become Surname Chairman. Look for an announcement of her duties and services to the membership in an early issue. Mrs. Mertie Harris and Mrs. Rex Arnold have volunteered to serve on the Family Group Record Sheet Committee. Details of this Committee’s duties and services are being worked out. The ultimate goal of this committee is to prepare a perma- nent life Family Group Record Sheet for each member of the Arnold Family Association and each Arnold antecedent as far back as the member has proof. Descendants of members will each have a Family Group Record Sheet, also. These perma—life sheets will be prepared from work sheets which, hopefully, the members will fill out and send in to the committee. After the history of each of the major branches of the southern Arnold families has been written, the perma-life Family Group Record Sheets will be bound and turned over to the Virginia State Archives as a gift from the Arnold Family Association. Here they can be used by present and as yet unborn generations to trace their Arnold Ancestral lines. As you probably noted above, Mrs. Ann Arnold Hennings has taken over the duties as Treasurer from your Editor. The press of Editorial work, in and of itself, is almost more than one person can do; so Mrs. Hennings kindly consented to one more task among the many she has already assumed. We are all grateful to this wonderful lady in Falls Church, Virginia, who continues to give so much of herself to the Association. The stencils for our anniversary issue were cut by Marian Ledgerwood, who managed to work this chore around her job of indexing the first volume. Members who renew their memberships before 15 September 1971 will receive an Index free of charge. Those renewing after that date, and all new members, will have to 3 pay $1.00 for the Index. Our warmest thanks to Marian Ledgerwood for all of her many services to this Association. Our member, Mrs. David F. Coslet (Dorothy) 11 Fairlane Circle, Altamont, Illinois, 62411, is our Angel for this, our pioneer year. She has graciously donated $100.00 to our Arnold Family Association. After living on mere hopes, many times, for ways in which to meet our printing and postage bills, we are very grateful for the margin of comfort this gift will offer. From all of us to you, Dorothy Coslet, bouquets! Since our last issue, postage rates for Third Class Mail (which is the way our quarterlies travel) have risen from .06 for the first two ounces to .08, which represents a rise in mailing costs of 33 1/3%. The rates of .02 for every additional ounce remain in effect.* Just one more reason why the officers saw fit to approve an increase in the costs of our memberships. The Editor had a busy, happy summer tracing Arnolds/Arendels in South Caro- lina and Georgia, which she will share with the membership as soon as she can organize and arrange the materials. I hope that each of you had the opportunity of finding some new bit of data this summer which you will also share with us. Our Birthday Issue is largely a Virginia issue. Justification for such an issue rests on the fact that most of our southern Arnold lines probably go back to this "Mother of States". Some of you, as myself, are not back to Virginia yet, in your research —- but we will be, someday. When we do turn to Virginia, we will have these records to aid us. Our Winter—issue, 1971—1972, will be an issue devoted to South Carolina. If you have been meaning to send in your South Carolina records and just haven‘t gotten around to it, please do so at once. Remember all records you send to the Association are published in our name. Please send xeroxed or typed records, clearly marked with your name and addresss, and put records for separate states on separate sheets for ease in filing. Thank you. Thank you, also, for your many kind words in regard to the job your editor is doing on the Quarterly. The editor gets very "deep in the darkest hour of (many) very heavy week(s)" and is overwhelmed at times by the immensity of the chore of getting the Arnold family all straight; but then a new record comes in with a new clue and an encouraging word, and suddenly it’s all worth it once more. I should like once more to reiterate that without the help of all the membership, your editor is nothing. So please continue to help me and send in your records, God bless you, Hazel Arnold MacIvor *Information furnished to the Editor by the Postmaster at Lake Orion, Michigan 4 Meet Our Members: Since our last issue, the following persons have joined our Association: 110. Moody 1 Septem- ber 1924. They were the parents of five fine children, one son of whom has deceased. Ruth commutes back and forth between her winter home in Clarkston, Georgia and her spring and summer home at lovely Lake Junaluska in the mountains of North Carolina. Her greatest pleasure is receiving her children and grand- children in the summer and doing all the fun things for which the Moody family is known. Ruth’s next greatest pleasure, after her children, is traveling, and her children have made a sign for her mountain cottage, "The Happy Traveler". Her interest in Arnold genealogy has been long-standing and her files are full of interesting Arnold data. Of her, the editor feels, it can truly be said, "To know her is to love her." FROM OLD NEWSPAPER AND FILES -- Fairfax p. 102 RICHMOND INQUIRER, Friday, June 14, 1837 "In this issue PRESQU’ ISLE on the Mattapony is advertised for sale by John S. Barrett, who had married Nancy, daughter of Benjamin Temple. He thus accurately describes the location: ‘On the west I am bounded by the lands of General Sylett whose beautiful and excellent mill is situated at the entrance of the plantation; on the north by the town of Ayletts, from which it is distant only a little more than a mile.’ "Presqu’ Isle was the former home of Joseph Temple and his wife Ann Arnold. Arnold’s Ferry was operated from this farm to the King & Queen side of the River. This was before the establishment of the ferry at Aylett’s Ware— house. In the King William Petitions, among the original papers in the Virginia State Archives, there is one from Philip Aylett praying ‘that a ferry be established at Aylatt’s Warehouse on Mattapony River’, contending that in order to get there, ‘passengers from the opposite side of the river are obliged to travel several miles for want of a ferry,’ This ferry was to lead to the ‘lands of Fauntleroy and Anderson in the County of King and Queen.’ This petition is dated November 27, 1786." COLONIAL CAROLINE -- T. E. Campbell (Reviewed by Newman Arnold Hall) What the author has done - if you have not seen the book - is to start with the court order records (which is about all that is left) and build around these a remarkably informative story about the people in the county in the colonial period. It would appear that every name that appears in the Court Order Book is listed in the book. Having reviewed it carefully, one might glean more from the Court Order Book, but since this does not seem to be indexed, the task would be formidable. Correction: Spotsylvania County, South Carolina should read Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Our member, Mrs. Marian Garland, points out that she never stated her Arnolds were in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Your editor cannot figure out where she got this information. Please accept our apologies, Marie. Our member, Mrs. Marian Ledgerwood, writes, "In the second issue, on page 73, are listed the names of three Arnolds, credited with having been in 1820 Franklin Co., Tenn. census. This was sent to me about twelve years ago, by a genealogist who is supposed to be quite reliable. I accepted her reading and never checked it for myself. Which was a mistake on my part! Last week, I was going through a book, TENNESSEE CENSUS REPORTS by Houston, and taking out all Arnolds in the various counties for which there is an 1820 census extant. I noted the Arnolds in Franklin Co.,Tenn. 1820 were entirely different names from those I had in my records. Surely the book wasn’t wrong! I called for the microfilm of 1820 Franklin County ... and would you believe, the book was correct." Mrs. Ledgerwood, eager to set the record straight, sent in the following records which replace those sent originally: 1820 U.S Census - Franklin County, Tennessee Charles Arnold 2 2 1 1 0 1 2 2 0 1 0 Jacob Arnold 1 3 0 1 0 2 4 1 1 0 1 James Arnold 3 2 0 1 0 1 2 1 1 0 1 Johnson Arnold 2 1 0 2 0 1 3 2 0 0 1 John Darnal 1 1 0 0 0 1 2 0 0 0 1 James Darnold (Dannold?) 2 2 0 0 1 1 4 2 1 1 0 (Editor’s Note Marian, don't feel bad about making mistakes. We admire your courage in correcting this error, rather than letting it persist. We are sure that you, as ourselves, would rather be "wrong" than "right" if it helps someone get his line straight.} From our member, Mrs. Foster B. Hammers, comes this: "I have a correction to make on the Midway Cemetery records in Butler County (Kentucky). I copied the Arnold/Arendell inscriptions from book, KENTUCKY CEMETERIES, by Cox and McCully. She had part of them on one page, and part on another. I didn’t notice that those on the next page were in Green Hill Cemetery. Only Bennett, wife Cary and son, William, born 1805, are in Midway. Gary’s stone should read 22 December 1779 not 4 October 1793) Bennett’s stone also reads: 22 December but the year is 1777. Buried next to Bennett and Gary is their only daughter and her husband: 48 Faithy Mefford Feb.10, 1818 July 28, 1878 John Mefford May 5, 1813 Apr.8, 1862 Found Reddick Arendell and wife’s graves at Provo (Butler Co.,Ky) Reddick Arendell Mar. 15, 1835 Mar. 20, 1901 Elizabeth Arendell Aug. 25, 1833 Apr. 25, 1907 Cleopatra Theresa Arendell (daughter) Oct. 2, 1866 Feb. 4, 1891 and four sandstones in a row by Reddick. News and Notes: After a year of working together on the Arnold Family Quarterly, your edi— tor and Mrs. Hennings, the Secretary, finally met face—to—face. The occasion, a visit by Mrs. MacIvor and her family (husband, Angus, and daughter, Catherine) made to the Washington, D.C. area. Naturally, Arnolds were the main point of conversation. Plans were laid for future expansion in services and scholarly endeavors for the Arnold Family Association. Mrs. MacIvor attended the Georgia Genealogical Society’s annual workshop in Atlanta. The subject was Tories, and much information was gathered. After- wards, she and daughter, Cathy, left for a lovely three—day visit in the mountains with member, Ruth Baker Moody, at her Lake Junaluska home. June Graduates: Dennis Minter, grandson of member Gladys Arnold Minter, graduated from Cherokee County High School at Canton, Georgia. Doyle Minter, son of Mrs. Minter, received his M.A. degree from West Georgia College, Carrollton, Georgia. Bobby Minter, son of Mrs. Minter, received his B.A. degree from North Carolina State University at Charlotte, North Carolina. Theresa Minter, granddaughter of Mrs. Minter, graduated from Cleveland High School, Cleveland, Tennessee. Congratulations, Mrs. Minter! May at least some of your descendants take up the challenge you have so lovingly carried and show your same curiosity about their ancestors. President Edwin Albert Arnold had two grandchildren who graduated this spring. (Details were not available, as we went to press.) Leroy William Ledgerwood III (Roy), son of member Marian Ledgerwood and her husband, graduated from Spring Woods High School in Houston, Texas. Member Charles Arnold had a busy spring. Son, Charles Arnold II, graduated from Elkhart High School.
