All contributions for publica- tion or comments to the Editor, Mrs. Hazel Arnold MacIvor, should be sent to the above address. Purpose: The purpose of the Arnold Family Association of the South is to bring into contact with one another all those who are researching Arnold and allied families, who either originated in the South, or came through it and stayed long enough to leave records. We hope to do this by publishing an Arnold Family Magazine, Quarterly, which will contain records of a private and public nature on the local, state, and national level. Our ultimate purpose is to publish an Arnold Family History containing as many branches of the Arnold Family as can be documented. To this purpose, the Arnold Family Historian-Genealogist will accept, evaluate, file, preserve, and possibly publish records as they are received. Publications: The Arnold Family Association at present publishes only its Quarterly. Other publications will be announced as they are projected. Membership: All individuals regardless of surname, libraries or societies may apply for membership, which is on a yearly basis, beginning on 1 August of one year to 31 July of the next year. Membership dues are $8.00 annually. Member- ship entitles one to receive the Association’s Quarterlies free of charge. Quarterlies are $2.50 each, as long as they last. All members, other than Libraries or Societies, are required to complete applications and fill in pedigree charts to earliest-known ancestor. Requests should be made to Ann A. Hennings, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia, 22043. Please make check or money order to Arnold Family Association of the South. No cash, please. Holdings: The Arnold Family Association will place all of its records, publica- tions, books, etc. in the hands of its Historian-Genealogist. In the event of his/her death, the surviving officers will decide the place of repository. Genealogical Inquiries The Arnold Family Association keeps a record of all members’ surnames in its files. Members will be furnished upon request, if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope, the names and addresses of others working on similar families. It will also furnish lists of genealogists (in most cases supplied by Archives in Southern states). But it cannot assume responsibility for nor guarantee the nature and accuracy of work done by any such genealogist. Editorial Policy: Neither the Editor, or the Arnold Family Association of the South and/or the members of the Editorial Staff, assume any responsibility for error of fact, or opinion, expressed by contributors. It is our earnest desire to publish only reliable source material of a genealogical nature. Materials for publication are welcome and should be sent to the Editor Please type such materials or send xerox copies of original records. 109 ARNOLD FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF THE SOUTH Presidents Chairman, Family Group Record Edwin Albert Arnold Sheet Program 1341 West Hammer Lane Wanda Harris Arnold Stockton, California 95207 3409 58th Street Lubbock, Texas 74913 Historian—Genealogist, Editor: Hazel Arnold MacIvor Chairman, Pedigree Charts 2481 Eaton Gate Road Lois Purinton Santmyer Lake Orion, Michigan 48035 203 Graham Street Elkins, West Virginia 26241 Secretary—Treasurer: Ann Arnold Hennings Assistant Editor, Index Chairman 6600 Placid Street Marian Carter Ledgerwood Falls Church, Virginia 22043 1655 Imperial Crown Houston, Texas 77043 From the Editor’s Pen: With this issue we institute a new format which we trust the membership will approve. These changes are in response to the suggestions made by the Genealogical Committee of the American Library Association (cf. The Genealogical Helper, January 1973). A decision was made to delete the use of initials and abbreviations wherever possible in the interest of a more scholarly approach. Our goal, first and always, is to furnish the membership with authentic Arnold records in as literate and erudite a style as we are capable of producing. Unhappy as it makes us, we are forced to raise the price of the Arnold Family Association Quarterly* for the forthcoming year to $8.00 per annum. These new sub- scription rates will begin with the Volume IV, Number 1 Issue, August, 1973. The new price will include the Index to Volume III, if paid before 31 July 1973. The price for the Index will be $2.00 thereafter. Get your check for next year in right away, before it slips your mind. Members have received 579 pages of Arnold research for the first two and a half years they have been members. The cost for this tremendous amount of records was $13.00 ($4.00 first year; $6.00 second year; $3.00 first half of third year). We feel this is a bargain unequalled in the history of genealogical publications. Now for a forecast of coming events: our 1st May issue will be called A Pot- pourri of Arnolds and will contain all types of records of Arnolds from all states. We hope you will find a clue among these gems to aid you in your search; our 1st August issue will be The Sue Alexander Papers. We are proud to announce the sorting and organizing of these papers is drawing to an end, and we will be ready to present them to the membership at that time. These papers deal with Arnolds in Virginia and Kentucky. They represent a lifetime of work on Sue’s part and reach back in time to the early 1700’s. Thousands of Arnold descendants will be helped by these records. The 1st November issue will contain the Index to southern Arnolds in the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. with reviews of each book wherever apropos. This issue will also contain the Gertrude Crook Dean Papers and the Arnold-Martin-Spillers Papers. The 1st February issue will contain the Ancestors and Some of the Descendants of Benjamin Arnold of Greenville, South Carolina. This will be a very comprehen- _______________________________________ * Hereafter referred to as AFAS. 110 sive study and rests not only upon the Editor’s work, but upon the work of Dr. John Scott Davenport, Mrs. Barbara Griggs, Mrs. Ruth Baker Moody, and others whose records we are awaiting. This issue on Kentucky does not contain nearly all of our records on that state. We have enough records, thanks to Mrs. Marian Hammers, for two or three more Kentucky issues. She has done a splendid job on Court, census and cemetery records for the western part of Kentucky. So, more Kentucky issues are in the offing! Have a lovely Spring. God be with you all. She is well known and deeply loved, for her warm, generous nature and abiding Christian spirit(, In giving her pedigree below, the Editor is going to simplify it, due to Mrs. Arnold’s advanced age and unfamiliarity with genealogical forms, For we do want her to read it, as she, more than anyone else, helped your Editor to solve the "mystery" of the Gwinnett County Arnolds. She Is the Editor’s first cousin, twice removed. Mrs. John Arnold (a Miss Mitt) Baptist. About a m. from Clear Cr: Chh: -off from the road, From Co: Va. I was there, when there were indns: yet in Fauquier. Came to Ky. Augt. 1781. There were 180 of us, when we came out. Lewis Craig came then; it was his chh: that moved out. They prayed and sung every night, Lewis Craig had not a very great talent for preaching, but was not to be beat at exhortation. We were sometimes in a string of 3 ass - Never saw an indn: — Provi- dence seemed to order that there sho’d be none, so many came out that falls more, I suppose, than in any other year. The road seemed always full. (1781) ...Jimmy Arnold, my bros in law, told us we co’d get no meat on Gilbert’s Cr; and we wo’d be just exposed to the indns: to go over to Bryant’s S. where we co’d get something to eat, No Buffalos on the other (his) side of the River. Lewis Arnold, my bro: in law, had come to Bryant’s S. the year before (we came) and raised bread. We had hemp seed and the boys went out in March & if I wo’d sow up a sheet and give them, my 2 boys wo’d bring me in some wool, It was right fine. Wove Coverlids. 123 P.2 Historical Collections. Attack on Bryant’s Station. 1. The Bradley Alarm. 2. The Black-man’s fight. 3. The firing of guns. 4. The carrying in of water, to keep up the fort, and put out the fire. ... A negro of Johnson’s was outside of the Fort. (Had been in the garden) (When was this?) - (Early in the morng. I think, Had the charge of the garden.) The black man was scared before the firing. Sd. he heard the indns: coming, & that he wo’d slip into the Fort softly: (tho’t he co’d get in before them) but got scared, and had to run. Mr. Arnold was holding the cow by a short rope, while I was milking when the indns: came. We heard them fire 3 guns, and instantly knew it was an army. They wo’dn’t have fired so near the fort, & so many, if it hadn’t been that there was an army. It (the firing) was on the opposite side of the Fort (from that where their cabin was, & where they were milking.) I ran in with my pail of milk. (Again Mrs. A. says) that very morning I had been out milking ... We were milking just outside of the outside door, when we heard the guns. The cow wodn’t stand to be milked. Held by a rope, We jumped up, & ran into the Fort. We got this & some other cows in, ... I had been out that morning, so far, to milk that cow, nearly dry, And when that firing was (afwds: when she had been bro’t into the ft.) she was so scared she run way off, & 2 calves that were with her, out of the reach of indns: — Some men that were out aftwds: saw her 3 as off: didn’t get home for a week, ... They did not know what the indns: fired at. They didn’t attack then: nor did they know what they did it for, but to let them know (in the station) they were there, and to draw them out. The indns a came Friday night and went away Saturday Evening. Col. Johnson had command of the 3, while there: but at this time was gone w. 10 men to Va. No one had the particular command then, Everyone fought for himself. ... There were 530 indns: & white men (30 of them British whites) that attacked the S., and only 30 men were within to defend it. We had 40 in all - but none were out except the 10 gone to Va. ....Late (on Saturday) in the day, after we had taken in water, and done everything necessary to fix up the doors, &c - 14 men sd they wo’d go out to the battleground (in a Lane that led to Lexgton:) (that is) to see if there were indns: They had not gone far, when the foremost one sd. “Boys there are indns: enough” & they turned, and rushed to the fort, Both parties fired. ... The indns: fire hit no one; except a bullit hit a rail, and the pc struck my bro: Nimrod in the face, wt. harm, They saw aftwds: the place where the rail was marked, My bro: Nimrod Mitt, was hit in the face by (the splinter of) that rail, sd he had come far enough: indns: plenty. ...John Arnold, my husbds had a double triggered gun; it had. gotten out of fix, & he co’dn’t get it off. He took the lock off, and when he had. put it on again, the gun went off accidently in his hand The bullit passed over the heads of 2 women; and, the powder flashed up into his eyes, and made him blind for some time. The battle of the Blue Licks was on Monday. Cousin Ezekiel Fields was killed in that battle. He had been a prisoner once before. Sd. he had been treated so 124 barbarously, he wo’d never be taken again. 20 men came along on that Monday night: sd. they had never been off their horses. They sd. all were killed. They wo’dn’t even stay w. US that night. We at 1st tho’t of going to Lex: - but gave it up. It was that Monday week, before the last man came in, that was out. Buck: - On Friday last I called to see an aged mother in Israel and while we were engaged in a short and pleasant conversation on the subject of the Banner, the Indian mission, &c, she remarked that if she lived to see the 15th day of March next, she would be 85 years of age. She was born in Va., emigrated to this 126 State when young, was in the battle at Bryant’s Station, and indeed since her first recollection we had been driving the poor Indians further off from their own ground, and she thought if we owed any people on earth favour it was the Indians. She then called for her purse and handed me $20 with these remarks: take this, send it to Bro, Buck for the poor Indians. I do not know that I shall live to see another annual report of the Society, but feel that I cannot do less than this at this time. She then handed me the last report of the society which she supposed you sent her, saying, here take this the print is too small for my eyes, though I have heard it read, and rejoice that the society has succeeded so well, and, seems to be doing so much: hand, this to some friend to read who is able, and that you think it will do good. (I have selected that friend.) This dear mother is Mrs. Elizabeth Arnold, of this county; her children, grandchildren, and, great grandchildren are very numerous, Enclosed, you will find the money; and may we not hope that many others will follow this noble example of sister Arnold. Pages 633—634, REDDICK ARENDELLL, farmer, was born in Rochester, Butler County, March 15, 1835, and brought up there until the age of five years when his parents removed to Muhlenburgh County, where he resided until 18511., when he removed. to Kansas, but returned to his native State in the fall of 1856, and settled on Hickory Camp Creek, five miles southeast of Rochester, His parents were Reuben and Lavinia (Dewese) Arendell, who removed, the former from North Carolina, and the latter from South Carolina, to Kentucky with the subject’s grandfather, John Arendell, who had fifteen sons and one daughter, Reuben Arendell was the fourteenth son, and fifty years ago owned. lands in Butler County, extending four miles along the Green River, including the present site of Rochester. Mr. Arendell did not enjoy the facilities for mental training in his early life that children at the present day have, but acquired a taste for reading, and seeks to give his children the advantages of instruction in school and at home, His business, since 1856, has been mainly farming and lumbering, In 1854 he was united in matrimony to Eliza- beth, daughter of 1, Arendell, also a second cousin. She was born August 24, 1833, and is the mother of nine children, six of whom are now living: Theodosia Earnest, Henry McDonald (married to Joanna Cook), Lavinia (wife of T. E. Pendley), Cleopatra Theresa, Josephine Lillian, Eliza Celeste. Mr. Arendell’s farm consists of 135 acres of timber and plow land, comfortable homestead, etc. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and a stanch Democrat in politics. 132 Perrins, History Kentucky (1886) (Contributed by Lloyd Ramyer) page 636. Simpson County. Dr. W. E. Arnold was born March 5, 1808 in Abbeville County, South Carolina and is a son of Augustine and Nancy (Delph) Arnold, who were born and reared in Culpeper County, Virginia. Dr. Arnold is the second of six sons and daughters. His parents emigrated to and settled in South Carolina about 1800, where his father was engaged in mercantile pursuits and later in life on the farm, Augustine Arnold died in 1844, aged 61 years. He was a son of William Arnold, who was born and reared in Culpeper County, Virginia, William Arnold was a soldier and served through the great struggle for Independence; was present at the seige of Yorktown and at the Surrender. After the war he married Miss Davenport of Virginia, who was of English origin. William Arnold was the son of Rueben Arnold Dr. Arnold was reared on a farm and educated at Cokesburg College, He remained with his parents until his marriage in February 1831 to Matilda Clifton of South Carolina. Miss Clifton was the daughter of William and ? (Deem) Clifton who were born and reared in Edgefield County, South Carolina and were of English descent. Dr. W. E. and Matilda Arnold had five children born of their union: Wesley P., William (deceased), James A., Henry (deceased), and Whiteman (deceased). Mrs. W. E. Arnold died in 1841 in Barren County, Kentucky, to which county our subject had moved in 1837, and engaged in teaching. In 1841 he commenced the practice of medicine with Dr. George W. Rodgers of Glasgow. In 1842, he located near Bowling Green, Kentucky. In October, 1841, he married Polly Ann Delph, of Barren County, Kentucky, a daughter of Merryman (native of South Carolina) and Lucinda (Taylor) Delph, who was a native of Hart County, Kentucky. Her father was an extensive farmer and also a merchant. Dr. Arnold had born to him by this union one child, Clark Arnold, now in Fort Worth, Texas, Mrs. W. B. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, He is also a Mason, and was a Granger. He cast his first presidential vote for Jackson in 1832. After 1840 he was a Whig, and since the war he has been a Democrat. 133 The Arnolds of Garrard County, Kentucky (Compiled and contributed by Newman Arnold Hall) The 1800 tax lists of Garrard County, Kentucky, give three Arnolds: Humphrey, John and Reuben, It is probable that these three were related -- possibly brothers. In Book C. page 110 — Garrard County Deeds — there is a transaction dated 20 April 1807 between John Hawkins of Garrard County, of the one part and John Sheppard, Jacob Man, Elizabeth Arnold, the heirs of Sarah Berry deceased, and the heirs of Reuben Arnold, deceased, all heirs of Humphrey Arnold, deceased, for 125 acres on Dick’s River which John Hawkins had paid for while Humphrey Arnold was still living. In a later deed the following year, Elizabeth Arnold transfers to her son, John, her interest in lands from the estate of Humphrey Arnold, deceased. The following marriages are on record for some of the individuals in the above 1807 deed: Reuben Arnold married 17 July 1780, Culpeper County, Virginia, Margaret Hudson. Elizabeth Arnold married 24 December 1786, Lincoln County, Kentucky, John Shepherd. John Arnold married 13 December 1787, Madison County, Kentucky, Elizabeth Brown. Mary Arnold married 28 February 1788, Lincoln County, Kentucky, Jacob Mann (Elizabeth Arnold listed as mother of Mary.) No additional documentary information has been obtained to establish the parentage of the six Arnolds: Reuben, Elizabeth, John, Mary, Sarah and Humphrey. It is possible that all were members of the same family, Two, as noted, were children of Elizabeth, Circumstantial evidence also suggests that Reuben Arnold was the son of Isaac Arnold who appears frequently in the Orange County, Virginia Court Order Books during the period 1750—60. John Arnold and Elizabeth Brown had the following children: 1. Humphrey Arnold born 1789 married Anne Brown. 2. Elizabeth Arnold born 1791* married 27 April 1808 to John Denton 3. Anna May Arnold born 1793* married 25 November 1812 to Thomas Royston 4. Absalom Arnold born 1795* married 10 September 1817 to Tabitha Clay Bruce 5. Elijah Arnold born 1797 married (1) 10 November 1819 to Malinda Lamme (2) 9 July 1832 to Sandel Traylor 6. Lucy Arnold born 1799* married 12 December 1818 to Moses Hubbard 7. Malinda Arnold born 1802* married (1) 6 June 1821 to Allen B. Dillard (2) 20 May 1833 to George Brown 8. Thompson Arnold born 1804 married 1832* to Sarah J. ______ 9. Nary (Polly) Arnold born 1806* married 1821 to John Slaven, Jr. 10. William Willis Arnold married 2 December 1839 to Emily Doty ( * estimated date) The will of John Arnold in Garrard County records, dated 2 May 1838, confirms parentage for several of the above. All marriages given are from Garrard County records. Births are from census records or are estimated from marriage dates. Reuben Arnold was born about 1750-55 probably in Orange County, Virginia, His parentage has not been established, but as noted above, his father may have been Isaac of Orange. If he is a member of the probable family group listed above, his mother would have been Elizabeth, He is to be distinguished from Reuben Arnold 134 of Spotsylvania, son of George and Sarah (White) Arnold. The wife of Reuben of Garrard was Margaret Hudson, daughter of David and Keziah (Plunkett) Hudson, born 21 June 1756 in Culpeper and died 26 October 1848 in Garrard County. Reuben Ar- nold died 20 February 1807, and his wife and he are buried together in Garrard County. (Kentucky Cemetery Records, Volume I) Culpeper County deeds record the transfer from David Hudson to Reuben Arnold of fifty acres on 20 January 1782. Earlier on 13 March 1777 Humphrey Arnold had obtained land from John Spotswood adjoining that earlier obtained by David Hudson from Spotswood On 19 December 1785, Elisha Arnold and wife, Susanna (the only Arnold appearing in the 1782 Orange County Tax List) obtain property in Culpeper County. Both Humphrey and Reuben appear in the January 1781 list of recruits from Culpeper County. On the same day, 15 October 1787, Elisha and Reuben Arnold sell their Culpeper County lands, Reuben Arnold, according to family tradition, arrived in Kentucky in November 1787. It would appear that Reuben, Humphrey, and Elisha of Culpeper may have been brothers. No further information on Elisha is available. Reuben and Margaret (Hudson) Arnold had the following children: 1. Lucy Arnold, born 11 July 1782, died 1858, married 28 July 1801 Armistead Reed 2. Elizabeth Arnold born 3 January 1784, died 23 November 1862, married 28 July 1801 John Bourne 3. This is due, no doubt, to the fact that the editors live so far apart and have little opportunity to proofread each other’s work before it goes to press. Here are our latest errors, Please make corrections as indicated in your Volume III. Numbers 1 and 2 issues: page 28, line 24, change “Mungry” to “Mungy”. page 39, line 28, should reads "Virginia Magazine of History", Volume 6, pages 389 — 396, This article “Jacobitism in America”, was in the above-listed periodical, but was checked against original documents your Editor had copied at the Virginia State Archives in April 1972. page 52, last three lines at bottom of page begin with references in Swem’s Index and should read: 33V46, i.e. Virginia Magazine of History, Volume 33, page 46. 33V144 33V230 page 53, lines 1-4 inclusive, same type of error as above. Please correct to read: 31V342 33V24 33V353 136 page 54, reference number 4, at bottom of page should read, “Wm, John in 1782 in Berkeley County, Virginia, Virginia Taxpayers, page 67.” “Wm. St. John, Halifax District, North Carolina in 1790. "North Carolina Heads of Families", page 77.” reference number 5, should read: DAR Patriot Index, page 610. NOTES AND NEWS: We have received a donation of $100.00 from Mrs. Dorothy Coslet toward accumulating the LDS Library data for our files. We wish to extend our warmest thanks to this generous lady for this gift and for her gifts in the past. We have a number of Volumes I and II Indices on hand, If you do not have an Index for these first two volumes, send to Mrs. Hennings, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia, 22043, today. They are $1.00 each. Hurry, while they last! We are rapidly running out of complete sets of Volume I. We have only two left, The complete set of four issues contains 183 pages of records about Arnolds in Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Ken- tucky. The entire set costs but $10.00! Once they are gone, the only way one will be able to get a complete set is to pay to have them xeroxed, plus a service and mailing charge. This is your last chance to get these historic issues which have become collectors’ items! Our handsome new cover was designed by Paula Kaufman, an art student at Michigan State University. She used as her model the Coats Armour featured in the Magazine of American Genealogy, Arms to Ash, Number 8, March 1930, pages 75-76. This number was loaned to the Association by our President Edwin A. Arnold We wish to thank him for his generosity and will return his magazine after our next issue, “Potpourri of Arnolds”, in which we intend to publish further from that work, In regard to the Arnold Coats of Arms, it should be remembered that Coats Armour were conferred on particular individuals for service to the Crown, (Some were purchased by plebeians during the Industrial Revolution.) Only the eldest male heir in a family, whose right to display arms had been granted by the Crown, can legally (in British Isles) and ethically display his family’s arms, Carie Shellnut, Jr., 18 year old son of Mrs. Ciro De Lisi, sister to the Editor, died on 19 January 1973. We extend our sympathies to the family of the deceased, Ann Arnold Hennings sent notice from the Washington Post, 28 October 1972, of the Unveiling of a Memorial in Memory of Ann Arnold in the King David Memorial Gardens, Sunday, 29 October, 1972, at 11: 00 a.m. o’clock. Mrs. Elizabeth Barton is donating her copies of the AFAS Quarterlies, after she has read them, to the Jonesboro, Arkansas Public Library, This is a splendid idea, Mrs. Barton, and others might like to follow your example. 137 Mrs. Julia Dishman Arnold, wife of the late Isaac David Arnold, and mother of our member, Julia Arnold Clews, died 23 October 1972. The officers and member of the Arnold Family Association extend their sympathy to the family. Heather Lynn MacIvor, born 6 June 1972, Pontiac, Michigan, is the first grandchild of the Angus Stewart MacIvor, Jrs. She’s a doll! Constance Lee Durst, daughter of James Harold Thirst and Mrs. Robert Dancer, is engaged to Michael Brian Dobson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dobson of Oak Park, Michigan. A 30 June 1973 wedding is planned, Mrs. Dancer is a sister of the Editor. The wife of our member, Mr. William H. Arnold, is gravely ill. They will appreciate the prayers of the membership.
