All contributions for publication or comments to the Editor, Mrs. Hazel Arnold MacIvor, should be sent to the above address. Purpose: The purpose of the Arnold Family Association of the South is to bring into contact with one another all those who are researching Arnold and allied families, who either originated in the South, or came through it and stayed long enough to leave records, We hope to do this by publishing an Arnold Family Magazine, Quarterly, which will contain records of a private and public nature on the local, state, and national level. Our ultimate purpose is to publish an Arnold Family History containing as many branches of the Arnold Family as can be documented. To this purpose, the Arnold Family Historian-Genealogist will accept, evaluate, file, preserve, and possibly publish records as they are received. Publications: The Arnold Family Association at present publishes only its Quarterly, Other publications will be announced as they are projected. Membership: All individuals regardless of surname, libraries or societies may apply for membership, which is on a yearly basis, beginning on 1 August of one year to 31 July of the next year, Membership dues are $8.00 annually. Membership entitles one to receive the Association’s Quarterlies free of charge. Quarterlies are $2.50 each, as long as they last. All members, other than Libraries or Societies, are required to complete applications and fill in pedigree charts to earliest—known ancestor. Requests should be made to Ann A, Hennings, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia, 22043. Please make check or money order to Arnold Family Association of the South. No cash, please. Holdings: The Arnold Family Association will place all of its records, publications, books, etc. in the hands of its Historian-Genealogist. In the event of his/her death, the surviving officers will decide the place of repository. Genealogical Inquiries: The Arnold Family Association keeps a record of all members’ surnames in its files. Members will be furnished upon request, if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope, the names and addresses of others working on similar families, It will also furnish lists of genealogists (in most cases supplied by Archives in Southern states), but it cannot assume responsibility for nor guarantee the nature and accuracy of work done by any such genealogist. Editorial. Policy: Neither the Editor, or the Arnold Family Association of the South and/or the members of the Editorial Staff, assume any responsibility for error of fact, or opinion, expressed by contributors, It is our earnest desire to publish only reliable source material of a genealogical nature. Materials for publication are welcome and should be sent to the Editor. Please type such materials or send xerox copies of original records. 2 THE ARNOLD FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF THE SOUTH President: Chairman, Family Group Record Edwin Albert Arnold Sheet Program 1341 West Hammer Lane Wanda Harris Arnold Stockton, California 95207 3409 58th Street Lubbock, Texas 74913 Historian-Genealogist, Editor: Hazel Arnold MacIvor Chairman, Pedigree Charts 2481 Eaton Gate Road Lois Purinton Santmyer Lake Orion, Michigan 48035 203 Graham Street Elkins, West Virginia 26241 Secretary-Treasurer: Ann Arnold Hennings Assistant Editor, Index Chairman 6600 Placid Street Marian Carter Ledgerwood Falls Church, Virginia 22043 1655 Imperial Crown Houston, Texas 77043 From the Editor’s Pen: It is with the deepest regret that I must announce that I will no longer be able to edit the Quarterly of the Arnold Family Association of the South after the publication of Volume IV, Number 4, I have been directed by my physician, Dr. Percy C. Marsa, M.D., to curtail all but the most essential duties, due to steadily declining health and strength. I have gained so much from my first three years association with the officers and membership of this Association. Their warmth and friendship, their willingness to share records, their financial support of our little fledgling operation, the new—found cousins and the teamwork of all the members, has been a constant inspiration to me, My greatest desire is that someone will step into the breech and carry on, I cannot bear the thought that our effort, so nobly begun, will cease to exist. I will continue to support the organization as long as it exists with my membership and contributory articles, and will remain on as genealogist and historian, I trust and pray that a Merciful God will send His Blessings upon this organization and it will grow and prosper. With deep appreciation to all who aided me in any way, however small, I say, “Thank you so much,” God bless and keep us all. Hazel Arnold MacIvor, Editor 3 ABOUT ANCESTORS Ancestors are to be found along with antique furniture and closet skeletons in nearly all well—regulated families. They consist of forefathers, foremothers, foreuncles and foreaunts, not to mention forecousins, who become famous in history like, for example, being beheaded by a king, or who managed to become a governor or a mayor or something like that. This enables an ancestor to be pointed out to with pardonable pride by his descendants forever more. Come to think about it, an ancestor is one of the easiest to come by and most fascinating objects of all of our earthly possessions. Being an ancestor consists merely of being boasted and toasted by one’s descendants. Many ancestors have, therefore, been enabled to make good long after they are gone from this world. More than a few of our ancestors who departed this life as poor and obscure characters, only a few jumps ahead of the sheriff, have had the good fortune, centuries later, to become the ancestors of many ambitious families with plenty of money, fame and publicity, as a consequence of which their tombstones have had to be greatly enlarged and adorned. Ancestors are one of the most valuable and satisfying of all of our worldly possessions, They are non—taxable and they can not be stolen, Their upkeep is practically nothing and they do not deteriorate with age. As a matter of fact, ancestors increase in value as they become older and older, Ancestors who were here hundreds of years ago are worth a thousand times more than our grandparents. Adam is our oldest and best known ancestor, If he were still around he would be about six thousand years old, Adam had a fairly good earthly record considering that the serpent, his wife and the apple tuned out to be his booby traps, But Adam is everybody’s ancestors he is taken for granted just like rain or sunshine, or like education or ignorance, or like taxes or liberty, so he does not rate a very great number of coupon books at the shopping center. Nearly all people own and operate ancestors, even the poorest of people. Many a man who has only one shirt to his back and the other in the washing machine often can boast of having ancestors who are the envy of all of his friends and neighbors. The moral of this story is that every one should be proud of his ancestors, To be sure there were a handful or two who did not or could not walk the straight and narrow, but what the heck — they weren’t YOUR ancestors! Arnold, one of the prominent farmers of Goshen Townships was born in North Carolina about 1833, and is the son of John and Sallie (Murray) Arnold, both natives of Virginia, They moved to North Carolina after marrying, and from that State to Cass County, Georgia, making their home there, six years. Later they went to Alabama, where the father died, in Benton County, of that State* in the spring of 1849, The mother afterward moved to Pulaski County, Arkansas, and still later to Washington County, where she died August 26, 1874. Mr. Arnold was a farmer, and had followed this occupation all his life, Their son, John J. Arnold, went to Phillips County, Arkansas, where he remained nine months, and from there went to Conway County, of the same state, but after a residence there of about eight or nine years he moved to Pulaski County, and in 1871 moved to Washington County, where he purchased his present farm, which consists of 170 acres, nearly eighty under cultivation, Mr. Arnold is a blacksmith, wagon-maker, carpenter and mill—wright by trade, but his principal occupation during life has been farming. He was married July 12, 1859, to Miss Ann Davenport, a native of New York***, To them were born five children: George E,, deceased; Christopher C., deceased; Josephine, wife of A. L, Nelson; Ella, wife of James Tunstill, and John N., at home. During the late unpleasantness between the North and South, Mr. Arnold served a short time in the Confederate Army. He is a conservative Democrat in his political views, has been a successful farmer, and is an honorable, straightforward citizen. Mrs. Arnold is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, (Notes by Marian C. Ledgerwood: * There is no Benton County, Alabama, ** They were in Washington County, Arkansas in 1870 census. q.v. *** According to Census, she was born in North Carolina. In 1960, a distant cousin, who lives near Goshen in Washington County, Arkansas, wrote to me: “There were Arnolds living in this community some years back, A daughter who lived here died some four or five years ago at about ninety years of age. A niece of this woman, Mrs. Ira Oliphant, lives near Goshen. Her mother was a sister to the one who lived near here, The woman who lived in this community was Jody Arnold. She married Link Nelson, Their two children are deceased. The other sister married a Tunstil ... one daughter, Mrs. Ira Oliphant.”) 10 MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS OF ARNOLDS IN ILLINOIS (Contributed by Mrs. Lydia Wynn) In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, Amen. The Arnold Church was first organized at the house of Jerimiah Arnold in Jefferson township on 11 April 1835 by Elders Jerimiah Cash, Lewis Duncan and Elihu 16 Holcomb. Elder Cash was the first Pastor, succeeded by Elder Fettinger, who served until 1872. At this time thirty—three members were dismissed by letter to form the Pleasant Ridge Church. Since that time, the old Church has increased to seventy and built a neat house which still stands. January 22, 1898 1868—1931 1874—1956 August 4, 1885 June 8, 1908 December 1, 1886 This record made by William H. and Janice E. Arnold of Oak Ridge, Tennessee December 15, 1970 Excerpts from Frederick Goss of Rowan County, North Carolina and His Descendants (Contributed by Carl English Porter) Ann Goss, daughter of Ephraim and Ann (Workman) Goss, was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, and came to Washington County, Indiana, with her parents as a small child, Here on 24 November 1816 she married Benjamin B. Arnold, This marriage is recorded in the notebook of Elder John Wilson, an early minister of the area. In the year 1823 Benjamin B. Arnold was living in Harrison Township in Owen County, Indiana, “where he became owner of real estate by entry and very soon a prominent citizen.” He was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, He was a noted pioneer minister of the Little Mount Baptist Church which was organized in 1824 in the northern part of Wayne Township. In the records of the Maria Creek Baptist Church of 29 December 1849, “Elder B.B. Arnold, Ann, and daughter ‘Gillean’ joined the church by letter,” This little church was founded in 1809 in the northern part of Knox County, Indiana, and was destined to wield a wide influence on the settlers of this trackless forest, Some of the state’s history was made within its walls, Maria Creek Church took a firm and courageous stand with respect to the treatment of two racial groups, the Negro 18 and the Indians B. B. Arnold upheld the religious zeal practiced in this backwoods church, In January of 1851, he moved on to Daviess County, Indiana, to spread the gospel even farther, Today the original Maria Creek Church has been moved to the Campus of Vincennes University where it is used as a chapel. Soon this family emigrated to Warren County, Iowa, where Jeremiah and Elizabeth Sandy, sister to Ann, were living. By 1857 Benjamin B. Arnold was performing marriages within the county, In the 1860 census of Warren County, Benjamin B. gave his age as 65, Ann as age 58, and their daughter, Gilly Ann, as 35, Late in the same year, they returned to Indiana and, from 1861 into the year 1865, Benjamin B. preached bi—weekly in the Indian Prairie Baptist Church near Carlisle, Indiana. Joseph Goss Arnold, born 1818 died 14 December 1898 at the home of a daughter in Spencer, Indiana. Buried in Worthington, Indiana, married in Morgan County, 7 August 1843 Artemacy M. Hendricks, born 18 August 1828 —- died 6 May 1890 near Lyons, Indiana, By tradition, she was a niece of Governor William Hendricks of Indiana, Joseph Goss was a practicing physician for many years, He was named for the great Indian Chief, Jo Sylcombus, the leader of one of the tribes of redmen who inhabited the wilderness where the town of Gosport is now located, For a time during the 1850’s, Joseph Goss and his family lived in Hartford, Iowa. A daughter, Mrs. Mary Josephine (Arnold) Slinkard, born 17 March 1857 died 15 October 1944, and the wife of Andrew Pierce Slinkard born 1852 died 1932, related this incident: “During the Civil War my father, Joseph Goss Arnold, was leading a wagon train back to Indiana from Iowa, We were stopped by a band of borderland raiders who were rustling horses. They made off with our horses. While my father was deliberating our next move, a Confederate officer appeared. Father explained our misfortune and in so doing, gave the Masonic “Wigwag”. Seeing this, the officer went to the brigands and ordered the return of the horses. I was about six at the time and hid under our wagon during the terrifying experience.” Mary (Maria) Arnold married in Morgan County, 23 July 1846 Alfred Hayden. Gilly Ann Arnold, born about 1825. In 1860 she was with her parents in Warren County, Iowa, In the 1870 census, at age 46, she was living in Carlisle, Indiana, with her brother, George Arnold. Unmarried. George Goss Maxwell Arnold, born about 1827 died 1 November 1892 in Carlisle, married in Knox County, Indiana, 17 April 1851 Rachel Lewis Gilham, born about 1831 died 25 January 1909 at her daughter’s home in Swayzee, Indiana, George was an educator and taught school for several years in Warren County, Iowa, before returning to Indiana, Rachel Lewis was the daughter of Henry and Frances (Badollet) Gilham. (Notes by Carl English Porter, 24 May 1971: You will notice that the early data is rather sketchy. I still haven’t learned where B. B. Arnold and wife died, or are buried, According to census records, B. B. Arnold was born in Tennessee or in South Carolina. Since B. B. Arnold had a grandson, Benjamin Baxter Arnold, it makes me suspect that the elder’s middle name might also have been Baxter, The Mary Josephine (Arnold) Slinkard mentioned was the only great- grandparent I knew, I was five when she died, I have a considerable amount on descendants of Dr. J. G. Arnold (all girls) and brother G. M. G. Arnold. I also have a sketch of the Arnold arms, said to belong to our family.) 19 James Arnold of Ripley County, Indiana born 1755—1756 in Virginia; died 1828 in Indiana, His wife, Frances, was born about 1772 in Virginia, was living in 1850, Children: Thomas born in Virginia 1787 Robert born in Virginia 1793 James born in Virginia 1798 William born in Virginia 1802 Nancy born in Virginia 1807 Service Enlisted as a private in Captain Gillison’s Company of the 10th, subsequently the 6th Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel Edward Stevens, Major Samuel Howes, Colonel John Green and Colonel William Russell. Book Review: History of Western Maryland — Scharf, J. T. (Contributed by Linda Lee Herman) Settlers located in 1788 upon the lands lying in Maryland west of Fort Cumberland: William Ashby; James Henderson; John Arnold of A.; John Arnold of John; Margaret, wife of John; Anthony Arnold; Robert Boyd; David Baton; William Howell; Benjamin Hull; Thomas Williams; William Jones (Note by contributor: This is an incomplete list.) John Arnold died 26 April 1791. Correspondence of Mrs. James 0. Long, regarding SAMUEL ARNOLD: Samuel Arnold came to Philadelphia, settled in Frederick County, Maryland, and in 1750 he bought 67 acres of ground at Little River, The immigrant’s family was as follows: Daniel Arnold Zachariah Arnold born 5 December 1766 married Abigail Miller David Arnold born November 1759 married Elizabeth _____ and died 24 February 1844 Samuel Arnold Zachariah and Abigail (Miller) Arnold had eight sons and two daughters. They are both buried at Arnold homestead West Virginia (now I believe it is Mineral County, West Virginia). Their one son, Daniel, went to Ohio in 1830. Daniel married Catherine Harshbarger who was born Dayton, Rockingham County, Virginia. They moved to Wayne Township, Darke County, Ohio. (This would fit in with the locale of some of the branches of our Byrd and Long families who went to Darke County and held reunions there.) Most of the immigrant’s sons were ministers of the German Baptist Church. Katharine Arnold, born about 1792, married John Long. According to the census of Rockingham County, Virginia in 1850, John M. Long was 64 years, a farmer, born in Maryland, Catherine was 58 years, born Maryland; Benjamin 17 years, born Virginia. Living with them was Catherine Lineweaver, 19 years (a daughter, perhaps?). Catherine and John had a son whom they named Samuel Arnold Long, This is my husband’s line. It is handed down that Samuel Arnold Long was named after his grandfather Samuel Arnold. In checking back through histories, I find in 1792 a Samuel Arnold leased ground from Richard Kelso on the 15th of April 1799; he sold 300 acres on Mill Creek to Zachariah Arnold, This was in Virginia. 30 In 1810 census of Hampshire (Monongalia County, Virginia) I found Samuel Arnold with one son 10—16 years; I son 16—26 years; I male over 45; 6 daughters under 10 years; 1 daughter 10—16 years; 1 female 26—45. Living next door to Samuel, I found Zachariah Arnold with 4 sons under 10; 2 sons 16—26; 2 sons 10—16; 1 male 26—45; 2 daughters under 10; 1 daughter 10—16; 1 female 26—45. I also found in my. research that our Catherine had a sister by the name of Nancy Arnold who was born 12 April 1805, lived three miles from Mt. Hope and two miles from Mt. Sidney, She died 29 February 1868, and married Jacob Garber. She lived at Mt. Hope, Augusta County, Virginia, after her marriage to Garber.
