It is hoped that in the year ahead, before the present Editor’s retirement, we will have a new Editor. There are enough records left in the Arnold files for at least two more years of publication. It would be a shame for these records not to be shared. There has been a change in the content of the Quarterlies for the next two issues: The Benjamin Arnold data will comprise two quarterlies in one (Numbers 3 and 4), due to great amount of material. The DAR, Dean and Martin-Spillers papers should make a nice Volume V, Number 1 Quarterly. The last Quarterly of this fiscal year will be rich in English and early Virginia records. Any genealogical study of a southern family in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries must consist in an examination of the records of both England and America. Though this quarterly will be about a particular family, there will be Arnold and Allied Family records that will apply to literally thousands of descendants. We are sure it will be of the greatest interest to the general membership. The Editor discovered to her consternation that, in giving credits for the Family Group Sheet Program (Volume III, Number 4), the work of Lois Purinton Santmyer, who has compiled all of the Pedigree Charts, was not noted. Such is the modesty of this lovely lady that she said not a word, but the Editor desires to set the record straight. Her name is on the title page of the Compilation of Family Group Sheets along with the Chairman’s, Wanda Arnold. By way of updating the membership on the progress of the program, the Editor is pleased to announce that we now have 712 pages of Pedigree Charts and Family Group Record Sheets, Volumes One through Five: Volume I, 121 pages, contains records of Alison to Arnolds; Volume II, 157 pages, contains records of Bailey to Edwards;. Volume III, 135 pages, contains records of Faulkner to Isaacson; Volume IV, 160 pages, contains records of Jones to Norvall; Volume V, 139 pages, contains records of Osteen to Yarbrough. 43 With the completion of this Quarterly, the Editor departs for Virginia for two weeks. She will be staying with the Secretary-Treasurer, Ann Arnold Hennings. They will research the Washington - Richmond area for Arnold records, which will be shared with the membership in Numbers 3 and 4 of this Volume. Wish us good luck! A note accompanying the various documents and family records stated that she no longer had the health or the sustaining patience needed to bring her research to the order it needed to ready it for publication, but she wanted to share the results of years of research with the membership. The Editor attempted to organize the material but passed it to Mrs. Hennings as one who was more familiar with this line. Mrs. Hennings spent a great deal of time with the material and brought to it much order. But, it was the Assistant Editor, Marian Carter Ledgerwood, who put these papers in final order. Long hours and days were spent with typewriter, scissors and scotch tape. The result, we feel, is well worth the effort. We are sure the membership is grateful to Mrs. Alexander for sharing all her Arnold data, which is abstracted and summarized in the following pages. 50 Generation I STEPHEN(1) ARNOLD was born c1717/26, probably in Virginia. This station was set up by Capt. John Arnold, who commanded a company of spies, and was in what is now Anderson County. These spies, or most of them, took up land and built their cabins in the country or vicinity of this fort, and depended on the spies to give notice of Indian invasions. They patrolled the county on the south and west of the Kentucky river, and the banks of the Ohio below the mouth of the Kentucky, and usually were able to give notice of Indian invasions in time for the settlers to go into the big stations for safety, but not always; so there were many battles with the Indians at these cabins. Collins, Lewis, HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF KENTUCKY (1847) Page 554: But lower down, as the frontier extended, the most active and efficient was the late Capt. John Arnold, who settled a station on the waters of Little Benson Creek in 1783 about seven or eight miles above the site of Frankfort. Several other stations were settled higher up than that of Arnold, his being the extreme frontier; but not having sufficient men to guard them with safety, against the apprehended incursions of the savages, they were abandoned in about a year, and the occupants returned to the older settlements in Mercer, These settlements were re-occupied in the year 1786. Capt. John Arnold was the commandant of a company of spies for several years, and, with Samuel Hutton and others as his associates, ranged the country as far as Drennon’s Lick. Jillson, W. R. Sc. B.
