Looking back in review, this has been a really good four years, We have been privileged to share records which would have cost us, as individuals, a great deal of time, effort and expenditure of money. All have been helped to some degrees some have found new ancestors; others have been enabled to accomplish much through necessary negative research; and all of us have records to treasure for years to come. In the past four years there has been a real effort to present BASIC data, such as the earliest land grants in Virginia, revolutionary records, public service claims and items of a like nature, as well as maintain widespread interest by presenting data from various southern states. In this, our last issue as Editor, we bring some of these things to a conclusion. The file drawers of the Public Service Claims in Virginia (claims submitted by persons who furnished aid or supplies to the Revolutionary government) were gone over carefully and the last of the Arnold claims are presented. The Northern Neck Grants are included in this issue, thanks to the Virginia State Library, which xeroxed every Arnold grant in the file for the Editor on a visit there. Also, the Editor has abstracted some of the Virginia Colonial Land Grants which were only listed before. We have, in this issue, Mrs. Jeanette Osteen’s study of the genesis and growth of the Arnold family in Virginia. In Mrs. Osteen’s letter to the Editor and Mrs. Hennings, she stated she had structured this family line “after long and careful study”. It is presented for your perusal. Along the same lines, we are giving a study donated by Mrs. K. E. Arnold of Houston, Texas, which is from the same line as that of our Secretary, Ann Arnold Hennings., We therefore, in order to complete the picture, present Mrs. Hennings’ line as well. 87 The Editor’s book, SOME ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN ARNOLD OF VIRGINIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA, is under separate cover. It is only one chapter in the unfolding Arnold story. The Editor had hoped to publish many of these written by our various members, and to see, someday, a committee appointed to draw all chapters together in one monumental work. Let us hope this will still be realized in the future. The Editor tried to publish everything that was presented to the Association in a logical, sequential order. This has meant keeping some items in the files until a more opportune time. Now that the writer will no longer be Editor for the Association, these papers have been turned over to the Secretary, Ann Arnold Hennings. A list of these items appears in this issue. Mrs. Hennings will furnish any part of this information to any member who sends her a self—addressed, stamped envelope. Mr. Ted O. Brooke, in a letter to the officers of the Association, expressed a desire that the officers and membership find some way for the quarterly to continue, if no one has volunteered for the Editor’s job by 31 July 1974. If you are willing to help him, please write to him: Ted 0. Brooke 79 Wagonwheel Ct., N.E. Marietta, Georgia 30060 And now the time has come for my farewell to you. I have enjoyed working with you, sharing our records, thoughts and ideas. I shall miss each and every one of you. I especially want to thank our President, Edwin Albert Arnold; our Secretary, Ann Arnold Hennings; our Assistant Editor, Marian Carter Ledgerwood; our Family Group Sheet Chairman, Wanda Harris Arnold; our Pedigree Charts, Chairman, Lois Puriton Santmyer. Their hard work and support has meant much to us all. God bless this Association. The Editor, Hazel Arnold MacIvor Meet Our Members: We are concluding our presentation of Arnold ancestors only of the first hundred (Charter) members whose pedigree charts have not been published. August 11, 1749 - Will of William Arnold, Caroline County, Virginia. Was this William a brother of Anthony Arnold, wife Isabel? In 1704 Anthony Arnold had 100 acres in King William County. Virginia, and Benjamin Arnold had 1000 acres in the same county. Were they brothers, or was Benjamin father of Anthony? Which Benjamin 100 is this one? The one who married Bathsheba Bell, or the one with wife Elizabeth? In 1757 one Isaac Arnold made his will in King George County, Virginia. His eldest son was Isaac. and he had sons William Arnold and Benjamin Arnold. One of the above Benjamins may have been son of this Isaac. One Isaac Arnold of King George County, Virginia had a son Isaac. a son Thomas. This son Thomas had sons John, James and Humphrey Arnold. Weedon Arnold, wife Molly of Westmoreland County, Virginia, was a son of James Arnold, who was a son of Thomas Arnold. The Anthony Arnold of Caroline County. Virginia bought land here in 1675 from James Taylor. In 1687 Benjamin Arnold of Caroline bought this land. In 1723 an Edward Arnold bought land in this County. Isaac Arnold, wife Sarah of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, deceased by 1770, may have been the son of the Isaac who made will in 1757. Isaac and Sarah had a son Isaac. a son George and perhaps a son William. They had a daughter Sarah Steward, wife of John, and a son Benjamin. This Benjamin may be the one who had wife Elizabeth, children James, Betsy, Susannah and Barbary. His widow, Elizabeth, married (2nd) James Edwards. Johnston County, North Carolina deeds: Anthony Arendal - 1749 William Arendal - 1748 James Arrendall from William Arrendall - 1754. I think these Arendals are Anthony Arnold and William Arnold who died or left wills in the Caroline-Spotsylvania area of Virginia. Some Excerpts from the FAMILY HISTORY of VIRGINIA LOU KELLY -- by Kelly. * On deposit at the Clayton Library, Houston, Texas. (Contributed by Mrs. M. E. Arnold) Notes on Arnold Line Origin of the Name The best authenticated origin of the name ARNOLD is that it is of Welsh origin. Other theories say the name was well known on the continent before the Norman Conquest indeed that it is a family descending from an old Roman family of Arnoldus. This would be very interesting if it could be verified. The more reliable line, however, stems from a Welshman, Roger ap Arnold, meaning Roger son of Arnold, and in the twelfth century, when men began first to assume permanent surnames, this Roger called himself Roger Arnold and thus created the family of Arnolds. It is significant that while Arnolds are found in a number of English counties, they have principally centered in Vales and nearby Western counties. __________________________________________________________ * This material copied exactly as it appears in the book. All statements are those of the author of the book, and there may be some variance with other views in AFAS quarterlies. 101 THOMAS ARNOLD The first name in the Arnold Line in America is Thomas Arnold circa 1660- 1726. He may not be the emigrant Arnold. There was a John Arnold in Lancaster County, Virginia and an Anthony Arnold of New Kent County, Virginia, who took part in Bacon’s Rebellion. Either of these might have been his father, although this Thomas Arnold is named in the records in America very early. The earliest record found of Thomas Arnold in America is in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia in January, 1679, when he bought some land from Simon Miller. In 1679 he also bought land from Adam Wolfendale in Old Rappahannock County on the South side of the creek that figures in the Arnold land for four generations. This creek is variously spelled "Quigoteague" - “Chingoteak” or “Gingoteak.” In studying the Arnold land records this creek becomes very familiar. This land, when first bought, was in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia; then it was in Richmond County, organized from Old Rappahannock; then in King George County when that county was organized, Thomas Arnold married Grace (maiden name not known) and continued to live on this land until his death in King George County in 1726. His will was proved in King George County, but as it was recorded in the first Will Book, it is not available. ISAAC ARNOLD I Isaac Arnold I, the fourth and last child of Thomas and Grace Arnold, was born in Old Rappahannock County circa 1685 and married in Richmond County to Margaret Goffe in 1707. He died in 1758 in King George County, Virginia. Apparently he led a very active life; was prominent in many County Councils and was Vestryman of the Hanover Parish Church for many years. He was appointed Church Warden in 1743. He made an effort once or twice to establish his land in his blood line by creating an “entail” on his land, but in each case after his death the heirs broke the agreement and sold the land. His wife, Margaret Goffe, presumably died about 1719, as he is recorded selling land about that date which deed his wife did not sign. This couple had nine children. In his will he mentions his second wife, Mary. This later marriage produced four more children. ISAAC ARNOLD II Isaac Arnold II was the son of Isaac Arnold I and Margaret Goffe. He was born in Richmond County, Virginia in 1708 and married Sarah ________ in 1730. He is mentioned after his marriage in King George County, Virginia, in 1732 when his father, Isaac Arnold I tried to create an entail in the name of James Arnold, first son of Isaac II. He is mentioned again in his father’s will in connection with a legacy from his grandfather, Thomas Goffe. After his father’s death in 1758 Isaac Arnold II bought land in Spotsylvania County, and in 1763 he moved there to live with his children. His will is recorded in Spotsylvania County in 1770. He mentions his wife, Sarah (maiden name unknown), his daughter Sarah, wife of John Stewart II, and his two grandsons, Charles and John Stewart III and his son, George Arnold, dividing his estate among these heirs. His will is brief and was evidently written on his deathbed and signed July 24, 1770. 102 Following is the will: “I, Isaac Arnold of Berkeley Parish, Spotsylvania County, Virginia give daughter Sarah Steward 150 acres on north side of main road where son-in- law John Stewart lives in Spotsylvania County and one negro named York, together with all stock of every kind and what cash I now have in the house (better than 7 lbs.) The stock, household furniture and land I give to her and her heirs of her body lawfully begot and after death of said Sarah and my son-in-law John Steward, I give and bequeath to my grandson John Stewart his heirs forever. Item - To my son George remaining part of land south of main road 250 acres whereon I now live in Spotsylvania County, 2 negroes Charles and Toby with estate of every kind in King George County, and care of mother Sarah, to have sufficient maintenance from estate.” George Arnold, John Stewart II and Henry Pendleton were bonded for 1000 pounds to make inventory of Isaac Arnold’s estate on October 18, 1770. It was after Isaac II’s death that the entail placed on the King George County land in the name of James Arnold was broken through consent of James Arnold, his mother, Sarah, and his brother, George Arnold. GEORGE ARNOLD George Arnold was born in 1737 in King George County, Virginia and married Sarah White in the same county in 1758 when he was 21 years old. A record of the marriage is found in St. Paul’s Parish Register, November 9, 1758. He moved to and occupied some of the land his father, Isaac Arnold II, had bought in Spotsylvania County and lived on this land until his death in 1822. There are many records of his transactions on the Spotsylvania County books; particularly after the death of his wife he begins to give parcels of his land to his children, among them being Mary Arnold, wife of John Stewart III. The Revolutionary War records list George Arnold as Drummer at times but because of his age his actual service was not of long duration. Perhaps shortly after the Revolution George Arnold came in contact with Bishop Francis Asbury, the founder of Methodism in America, and apparently became a most ardent Methodist and a great friend of the Bishop. We find George Arnold’s name on the Board of Trustees of Randolph Macon College, and there are records showing where he had secured land to establish Methodist Churches in various places in Virginia. In 1816 Bishop Asbury, then worn out with his long mission, was on his way to General Conference in Baltimore and stopped in the home of George Arnold for a visit. While there he died rather suddenly on March 31, 1816. He was buried by George Arnold in his own private graveyard on the Arnold land. Later the Methodist Church prepared a tomb for the Bishop in the Eutaw Baltimore Church and moved the body of Bishop Asbury and placed it beneath the Chancel there. It is said that after the removal of the Bishop’s body, which was placed in a new casket, George Arnold preserved the original coffin of, the Bishop and requested that at his death he be buried in the Bishop’s coffin. This was done when he died in 1822. The home of George Arnold has been destroyed but the Methodist Church has placed a memorial stone to identify the place where the Bishop died. 103 The stone bears this inscription: “On this spot stood the home of George Arnold where Bishop Francis Asbury died March 31, 1816,” This stone was erected in December, 1906, by Washington District Conference of Methodist Episcopal Church South. George Arnold’s will was written quite a few years before his death and is given below: “11 February 1814. In the name of God Amen. I, George Arnold of the County of Spotsylvania, Parish of Berkeley, do constitute and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following. “In the first place it is well understood that I have given unto my son Reuben Arnold 44 acres of land as his full part of all my estate whatsoever; also my daughter Mary Stewart, my daughter Orpha Johnson and my son Hezekiah Arnold 40 acres each as their, full proportion of my land as well as of all my other estate real and personal. “Item. I give the rest of my children namely, Rebecca Arnold, Nancy Stewart, Aaron Arnold and Enoch Arnold all the residue of my estate real and personal to be sold and equally divided among them at my decease, “Lastly I appoint my sons Hezekiah Arnold and Enoch Arnold Executors of this my last will and testament, This the eleventh day of February one thousand eight hundred and fourteen." (signed) “George Arnold” (seal) “Signed and sealed in presence of G. Smith Rebecca K. Smith John Spindle.” The inventory of George Arnold’s personal estate was made by James Long, James Coleman, and Miles S. Wiglesworth. John Stewart III was administrator. On June 6, 1823 all of George Arnold’s property not otherwise given away before death or divided among the legatees was sold, as follows: 116 acres land at $5.60, to John Stewart 649.00 1 cow and calf, 1 horse 1 table, 3 books, desk and bookcase “ “ “ 1 bedstead & furniture “ “ “ 13.00 1 bedstead & furniture “ “ “ 10.00 1 small looking glass to Chas. Stewart Other things were bought by Thos. Duerson, Jas. Coleman, Richard Stears, Robt. Crutchfield, Jeremiah Wilson, Chas. Curtis, Henry Pendleton & Benj. Pendleton, totaling 704.45-3/4 “I do certify the above is a correct account of sales of the estate of George Arnold, dec’d amounting to $704.45-3/4, as made by John Stewart, admr., having kept the same myself.” “Charles Stewart” George Arnold’s gravestone has not been found, but it is known that he is buried near his home place in the private cemetery that is mentioned above. 104 MARY ARNOLD Mary Arnold was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia in 1765. Her uncle, John Stewart II and aunt, Sarah Stewart, lived across the road and she grew up with her cousins, Charles and John Stewart III. Her older sister, Nancy, married Cousin Charles and not to be outdone, she married John III a few years later, in 1790. Mary Arnold Stewart continued to live with her husband in Spotsylvania County until her death. She with her husband became the owners of all the former Stewart and Arnold land at this place. This couple had five children. Mary died in 1840, about five years before her husband, and is doubtless buried in the family graveyard at this place. The children of Issac Arnold I and Margaret Goffe were also born on this same land bat after the new county of Richmond was formed and the youngest ones in the still later formed county of King George. Most of these children moved on westward with the opening up of new frontiers. The new frontiers of these early days only moved about one or two hundred miles for a generation, and only explorers went into the unknown beyond. Isaac II, the oldest son, as well as William and Benjamin, moved southwest into Spotsylvania County and James into Fauquier County. One son, Mark, was in Kentucky as early as 1780 before the close of the Revolutionary War. Some of the daughters married local county men but most of them moved on with their husbands. The children of Isaac Arnold II and Sarah were in middle age during the Revolution and during that time remained on their various home places or served as best they could. This must have been hard on them and their families at times with the British Red Coats foraging through that section. These children remained where they had settled in Eastern Virginia and left it to their children to start the real migration. The children of George Arnold and Sarah White were all born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, but early began to move away. Reuben married Martha ________ and moved to Georgia. Nancy married her cousin Charles Stewart, son of John Stewart II and they moved to Indiana. Mary married our John Stewart III and remained on the home place. Hezekiah married one Crosby Luck and went to North Carolina. Aaron married Louisa Pettus and went first to Kentucky and then to Illinois. Enoch alone backtracked, moving to King George County -- probably because he married a King George County girl, Mary Dishmon. Orpha married John Johnson and Rebecca married Benjamin Pendleton. Both these girls left Spotsylvania County with their husbands and it is assumed they moved west. I am in great hopes that a new editor will be found shortly and we cam continue our. valiant efforts of bringing together as many Arnold lines as possible. A final financial report will be available about September 1, and anyone wishing a copy may receive one by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to me. A few months ago, when Hazel visited me, she left a large box of records that haven’t been published. I have reviewed each and every one and made an outline (25 typed pages) of all items, Due to the size of the listing. I am outlining here the different counties involved and the number of items per county. I will be glad to correspond with anyone wishing further details. 111 (Unpublished Arnold Records Available) Alabama (Kentucky) (North Carolina) Tennessee Bibbs (1) Grant (1) Chowan (2) Benton (3) Dale (1) Green (1) Cumberland (1) Carroll (1) Henry (1) Hardin (1) Dobbs (1) Fayette (2) Madison (3) Hopkins (2) Franklin (4) Franklin (1) Pickens (2) Kenton (1) Gates (1) Gibson (3) Lewis (2) Granville (6) Henderson (2) Georgia Lincoln (6) Halifax (2) Henry (1) Brooks (1) Logan (2) Hyde (1) Knox (2) Bryan (1) Mason (6) Johnstone (1) Lauderdale (3) Camden (1)) Mercer (to) Lenoir (1) Madison (4) Chatham ( Montgomery (1) Mecklenburg (1) Maury (3) Clarke (1 Muhlenberg (11) Moore (1) Sumner (1) Clay (1) Ohio (1) New Hanover (1) Franklin (5) Pulaski (z) Onslow (z) Texas Fulton (1) Shelby (1) Orange (4) Henderson (1) Green (1) Warren (7) Perquimans (1) Johnson & Hill (1) Gwinnett (3) Washington (2) Pitt (2) Kaufman (1) Habersham (1) Whitley (1) Randolph (3) McLennon (2) Hancock (3) Woodford (3) Rowen (1) Smith (1) Jefferson (1) Rutherford (1) Walker (1) Milton (9 (3) Maryland Stokes (4) Monroe (1 Allegany (1) Surry (6) Virginia Oglethorpe Dorchester (1) Tyrell (1) Augusta (2) Screven (1) Frederick (1) Wake (7) Bedford (1) Stewart (2) Warren (6) Campbell Tattnalls (1) Mississippi Wayne (1) Charles (1) Walton (1) Bolivar(1) Charlotte (1) Wilkes (2) Oktibbeha (2) Ohio Culpeper (1) Wilkinson Licking (1) Fairfax (2) Missouri Warren (1) Fauquier (2) Illinois Bates (1) Washington (1) Frederick (1) Peoria(1) Boone (2) Halifax & Hampshire (1) Caldwell Pennsylvania and King George (3) Indiana Calloway New Jersey King William (1) Boone (1) Carroll (1) Adams (I) Louisa (2) Hendricks (5) Cass (1) Chester Lunenberg (3) Grundy (1) Fayette Montgomery (1) Kentucky Henry and St. Clair (1) Nelson (1) Bath (1) Howard (11) Lancaster (1) Prince Edward (1) Boone (1). Hennings Notes and News: The following letter was received from Ted O. Brooke: 10 December 1973 79 Wagonwheel Ct., NE Marietta, Georgia 30062 Dear As you know, Mrs. Hazel MacIvor, our fine Editor, will be unable to continue in her position past Vol. IV, May 1974. No one has yet volunteered to replace her, and our Association may be destined for an untimely and gloomy end unless someone assumes her duties. Mrs. MacIvor has contributed mightily to our effort; in fact, without her, I doubt that our organization would’ve ever been created, nor have made such great progress in the last 4 years. I believe that to allow our Association and Quarterly to languish and die for lack of art editor would be a shameful lack of dedication on our part and, indeed, a disservice to our own descendants. Could we begin to generate some correspondence among ourselves to find a solution to this problem? I feel that we might divide Mrs. MacIvor’s duties into smaller parts, with several different people assuming various jobs, so the actual individual effort required to edit the Quarterly would be reduced. Remember the fate of our organization and Quarterly rest with us; we must act! I've sent copies of this letter to all officers of the Arnold Family Association or the South. Sincerely, (signed) Ted 0, Brooke If you share Mr. Brooke’s concern, send him a letter offering your help and support. Queries: John Felix Arnold, P.O. Box 595, Enfield, North Carolina, 27823.
