All contributions for publication or comments to the Editor, Mrs. Ann A. Hennings, should be sent to the above address. Purpose: The purpose of The Arnold Family Association of the South is to bring into contact with one another all those who are researching Arnold and allied families, who either originated in the South, or came through it and stayed long enough to leave records. We hope to do this by publishing an Arnold Family Quarterly which will contain records of a private and public nature on the local, state, and national level. Our ultimate purpose is to publish an Arnold Family History containing as many branches of the Arnold family as can be documented. The Arnold Family is collecting complete family group sheets for each member which will be used for this purpose and then be deposited in the Virginia State Archives, Richmond, Virginia. Membership: All individuals, regardless of surname, libraries or societies, may apply for membership which is on a yearly basis, beginning on 1 August of one year and ending 31 July of the next. Membership dues are $4 annually (subject to change at the beginning of each year and entitles one to receive the Quarterly free of charge. Individual Quarterlies are available at $2.50 each as long as they last. All members, other than libraries and societies, are requested to complete application forms and fill in pedigree charts to earliest known ancestor. Requests for membership should be directed to Mrs. Ann A. Hennings, Corresponding Secretary, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia, 22043. Please make check or money order (NO CASH PLEASE to The Arnold Family Association of the South. Editorial Policy: Neither the Editor nor the Arnold Family Association of the South and/or the members of the staff assume any responsibility for error of fact or opinion expressed by contributors. It is our earnest desire to publish only reliable source materials of a genealogical nature. Materials for publication are welcome and should be sent to the Editor. From the Editor's Pen: It is absolutely heart warming to see the renewals pour in for the new year and I want to take this opportunity to thank each member that sent along that something extra to help with our printing bill. To know our efforts over the years have meant something to someone is enough to keep us rolling for quite a while. Hazel has forwarded a listing of corrections to her new book and they are included as a separate section which can be removed. I want to apologize to those members I've promised copies from our unpublished files. The response to my notice in the last Quarterly was quite large and I will either publish the information in the next few Quarterlies or forward as time permits. There was much interest in the West Virginia counties and therefore I'm going to devote this Quarterly to this area. The Association has received-from Fredd E. Castleberry, Executive Director, Castleberry Clan of America, P. 0. Box 651, Washington, D, C. 20044, a request that the following article be circulated among our members in the hopes someone will find the information outlined: "Magdalena (Van Sintern) Kolb, America"s 'First Genealogist'?" "MARTIN KOLB,....a grandson of PETER SCHUMACHER, was born in the village of Wolfsheim, in the Palatinate, in 1680 and came with his brothers JOHANNES and JACOB to Pennsylvania in the spring of 1707. He married May 19 1709, MAGDALENA, daughter of ISAAC VAN SINTERN and she may claim the distinction of having been the first -2- genealogist in the province. ISAAC VAN SINTERN, a great grandson of JAN DE VOSS, a Bourgomaster at Handschotten, in Flanders about 1550, was born September 4, 1662, and married in Amsterdam CORNELIA CLASSEN, of Hamburg. He came with four daughters to Pennsylvania after 1687, died August 23, 1737, and was buried at Skippack. MAGDALENA (VAN SINTERN) KOLB, about 1770, when a very old woman, prepared a record of about five hundred of the descendants in Pennsylvania, which was sent to Holland and incorporated in the DEVOSS genealogy." The first person who makes available this information to all researchers will become an "INSTANT HERO" in genealogy and history. Any information on this request should be directed to Mr. Castleberry. Arnold of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, writes "On page 121 of Volume 3 of the quarterly, there is a tabulation of Lincoln entries of 1780 taken from `Old Kentucky Entries and Deeds' by Jillson. Four of the entries are under the name of Jos. Arnold. That is an error. Since one of my ancestors was Joseph Arnold, I obtained photocopies of the original entries, and they are in the name of 'James Arnold.' Apparently Jillson abbreviated James as 'Jas.' and when his book was printed his handwriting was misread as 'Jas.' Incidentally, I have found other errors of the same kind in Jillson when looking for information on other names in my ancestory. For example, I found the name Karr entered as 'Kaw.' There have been two chances for error, one in Jillson's reading of the original record, and second in the printer's reading of his handwriting. Consequently, where there is any possibility of a misreading, it is important to check the original record." Good advice, Mr. Arnold, and thanks. Hennings) p 22 "It is said that the branch of the Arnold family that settled in Maryland and West Virginia had fled from Scotland, Wales, or England to Holland or Germany (Europe) sometime in the early 1600's due to religious persecution. 'The story has been handed down to us that Francis Scott Key ....was related to one of our ancestors '....'according to letters from the Maryland Historical Society of Baltimore, Maryland dated 23 January 1964 to the compiler.' 'The mother of Francis Scott Key was Ann Phebe Penn Dagworthy Chariton. Key's great grandmother was Alicia Arnold, who came to Maryland about 1723; she was the daughter of Michael Arnold of Westminster, England.' If there is a relationship to this family, it looks as though it would be a very remote one." -13- Our Kin (Cont'd) p 23 Earliest Brethren settlers were the Arnold family who bought land in the Burkittsville area (Maryland). This family originally came from Hanover, Germany, and were first in Pennsylvania within the bounds of the Conewago Congregation where the record states that Samuel was a member of the church there. History records that sometime later the Arnolds moved to near Burkittsville together with a Rev. Boone (a brother of Daniel and a Brethren minister). Land records in Frederick County, Maryland, show proof of land ownership by three Arnolds, likely brothers, whom we know were members of the Church of the Brethern. John George(1), Samuel(1), Daniel(1)- deeds with their names were in 1748, 1752, and 1754. Daniel(1) bought just south of Burkittsville while others probably bought north of the town near the village which bears the name Arnoldstown. Brothers likely Dunkers. Daniel(1) was a minister. John George(1) and wife Catherine. Issue: David(2), Samuel(2), Daniel(2) (all ministers) and Zachariah(2) (Deacon). Will note of John George and Catherine Arnold dated 16 October, 1790 mentions: brother - Daniel; wife's daughter - Mary Ludwick; sons - John, Samuel, Zachariah and Daniel (David not mentioned); daughters Mary Ferguson, Susanna Gonse; Margaret Whipp, Catherine Whipp (married Dan). About 1785 some of the children of John Arnold moved to Beaver Run Congregation near Burlington, West Virginia, and were instrumental in establishing the first Brethren church in West Virginia. From Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, p 126, there is the following: John George (Johann Gorg) Arnold, age 34, came to Philadelphia on the ship, Elizabeth, in October, 1738, from Rotterdam by way of Cowes (Pa German Pioneer Vol. I, p 243-244). He must have gone immediately to the part of Prince Georges County, Maryland, which became Frederick County because Annapolis Land Record EI, p 876, recited that John George Arnold was settled on land called Ash Swamp, 150 acres. "....and the proprietors warrented land to him 6 May 1739. He was born 1704. His son Samuel was born probably about 1734 and he apparently married about 1756/7." John George(1) Arnold married Catherine _______. Issue: Samuel(2) (born in Germany and came to America and landed in Philadelphia about 1770. "(Note - There is a discrepancy in this date since the second son was born in 1767 according to his gravestone." Samuel was of the German Baptist Brethern (Dunkers) Church and he married a German girl soon after he came to America. He and Abigail (possibly Miller, daughter of Peter), settled in Middletown Valley, Frederick County, Maryland. They moved to Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1785 and settled at the Jake Cheshire place about three miles from Burlington, East, on Route 50 where it joins Beaver Run Road. Samuel(2) and Abigail (Miller?): Issue: Samuel(3) Jr. (wife unknown) came to Hampshire County about 1784/85 and settled about 2 mile east of his father. He was a Dunker minister. Zechariah(3) (b 5 Dec 17667 - d 5 June 1829) married Abigail Miller and lived at Jake Cheshire place with his father. Zachariah was a stonemason. Daniel(3) (b 1768 -16 June 1849) married 1792 1st Elizabeth Thomas (b 4 March 1774 - d 5 July 1820) and married 1832 2nd Elizabeth Wine (1762-1853 from Rockingham Co., Va.). Daniel was a minister in the Dunkard Church and lived near the Beaver Run. David(3) (b 1757 - d 24 February 1841 - Will in Frederick Co. Md married Elizabeth Slifer (b 26 Sept 1768 - d 18 January 1851). Catherine(3) Arnold married Dan Whipp. Charity(3) Arnold married Jacob Ludwig. -14- Errata Page 7 Footnote (Fn) 15, change cited reference to page 4 not "6."
