It will be a big issue, 50-100 pages per year. The first issue will contain North Carolina records only and will be published 1 January, 1976. The cost will be $5.00 per year for the Newsletter and all other privileges of membership - publishing your lines, queries, participation in the Family Group Record Sheet Program, help on your Arnold line from other members and Mrs. MacIvor (as time, allows). In the year’s leave of absence, Mrs. MacIvor, has used her available time to analyzing the various Arnold/Arrendell problems. In the upcoming North Carolina issue, which was beautifully organized by counties by Marian Ledgerwood (and indexed by her as well), Mrs. MacIvor will attempt to add further light to the origins of the Arrendeils In North Carolina. It is a very good issue with much information. The January, 1977, issue will be completely devoted to Virginia records. Hazel, Marian, and Ted Brooke have been working on Arnolds of Northeastern Georgia counties and; tracing their origins In Virginia and their migrations to Tennessee, Arkansas, and points west. These families include descendants of Thomas Arnold and wife, Grace, as well as possible children of Francis and Rachael Arnold. This promises, like the North Carolina issue, to be an exciting prospect as it opens new fields of research and new ways of looking at old data. Hazel has also worked out Arnold lines for the Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of Colonial Wars and American Founders and Patriots. In the future, please send all data to be publIshed to Mrs. Hazel A. MacIvor, 2481 Eaton Gate Road, Lake Orion, Michigan, 48035, and not to me. Let’s have a total renewal of subscriptions and stay behind our association until our Arnold problems on this side of the water have been solved. Your renewal slip can be found opposite this page of the Quarterly Please send these to me as Treasurer. Chappelier-Arnauld of France-England-America Families of Virginia-Chappelear (Vol II) by George W. Chappelear (The Shenandoah Press, Dayton Va. 1932.) (Cont. by Ann A. Hennings) Pgs 3-13 "It is interesting to note in connection with this sketch of the Huguenot reformation that in 1625 an Arnauld was in command of Fort St. Louis at LaRochelle and that LaChapeliere was pastor of the Huguenot congregation of this city and that they jointly frustrated a plot to deliver the city to the Catholic forces." The Huguenot reformation was especially strong in southeastern France, in the province of Languedoc, and Nimes and Uzes were two of the chief Huguenot towns. The latter was the home of the Chappelear family. It was there that Louis1 Chappelier married Simonne Rons, and it was there (in 1672) that Isaac2 Chappelier, their son, was born. There are no records of the fate of Louis and Simonne but Isaac was trained as a physician and surgeon. He emigrated after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) to London, according to the records of the French Church of Threadneedle Street. From this point the history of the family is told through the medium of the church and public records. 41 Families of Virginia-Chappelear (Cont'd) Isaac Chappelier married Ann, daughter of Elie Arnauld, or Arnaud, who was a native of LaTremblade, Saintonge, France, on October 28, 1696. (Publications of the Huguenot Society of London, Vol. 16, p 34: "Chapelier, Isaac, notif, (born) d'Uzes (in Uzes) fils de few (son of the late) Louis Chapelier et de (and his wife) Simonne Rons: Anne' Arnaud, native de LaTremblade, fille d (daughter of) Elie Arnaud et de Madelaine DeValau, October 28, 1696."] Isaac entered service-aboard H.M.S. Canterbury as surgeon and died in American waters between January 18, 1706/07 and May 10, 1707. His will is filed in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 103 Poley, and lists his wife, Anne, and children Isaac Chapalier and "..'..Chapalier the child being born since my being abroad I don't know the Christian name." Proved in P.C.C. London 10 May 1707 by Peter Gambo alias Cambauld, executor. It further appears that Isaac Chappelier and his wife, Anne Arnaud, had 5 children, according to the register of the French Church at London; and according to his will all must have died before the making of the will except Isaac, Jr. and Louis. 'The latter was born while his father was at sea and probably died without issue,. as he is not mentioned in the will of his grandmother, Madelaine DeValau Arnaud. Issue of Isaac Chappelear and Ann Arnaud: Isaac3 (b March 16, 1698); Marienne3 (b Jan. 14, 1701); Arnaud3 (b July 30, 1702); Estienne3 (bap. March 11, 1705); Louis3 (bap. Dec. 23, 1706). The will of Elie Arnaud, father-in-law of Isaac2 Chappelear is recorded in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 16 Plymouth, dated 4 Feb. 1726. It bears the note "Translated out the French". In it he leaves everything to his wife, Magdalen, to use and dispose at will to their children (unnamed). His wife is appointed executrix. Signed and sealed 14 Sept. 1724 - Arnaud (L.S.) Witnesses: Antonio Chabrol and Gabriel Doller. Proven in P.C.C., London 4 Feb 1725/6 by Magdalen Arnaud, alias Devallaud, widow, relict, the executrice named in the 'will. Madelaine DeValau Arnaud died about 1730 and her will tells more of the family history. It is recorded in P.C.C., Isham 23, also translated from French. Magdalen Arnoud, widow, was living at the time her will was written in Spittlefield, Middlesex. Her household goods were left to her grandson Peter Arnaud in consideration of service he had given her. One-third of her estate she bequeathed to her son, Elias Arnaud, distiller at Gosport, County Southampton. One-third of her estate was to be divided equally between her granddaughters, Mary Magdalen Arnaud and Susanna Arnaud, daughters of her late son John Arnaud. The remaining third she left to her grandson Isaac Chappelier. She appointed her son Elias Arnud and her granddaughter Mary Magdalen Arnaud as-executor and executrix of her will. It was signed and sealed at London 16 October 1730 by mark. Witnesses: Stephen Benee, Isaac Norman, and Ben Bonnet. It would appear from the will of Madelaine Arnaud that Isaac Chappelear, Jr. was the only surviving child of her daughter, Anne. At this time Isaac was not married or at least had no children: of whom his grandmother was aware. "Besides, he had left England and was in Maryland when her will was made." From the data given above it is evident that Isaac Chappelear and Rachel, his wife, had two sons: Elias Arnold Chappelear, who married Anne Brammell, and James Chappelear, who married Elizabeth Dent." "Elias Arnold Chappelear was probably born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, after 1730. Certainly he was a minor in 1743, and he was not known to his grandmother, Madaline Arnaud, at the time of the making of her will in 1730. He probably was named for his great grandfather, Elie Arnaud, who was also called Elie Arnauld." 42 Families of Virginia-Chappelear (Cont'd) p. 94 - ARNAUD "Among the Huguenot refuges from the-religious persecution incident to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes were Elie Arnaud and his wife, Madelaine de Valau. Their connection with the French Church of Treadneedle Street, London, is mentioned in the account of the Chappelear family. The Arnaud family was distinguished, in the records of the Huguenot movement in France." The will of Andrew Arnaud of St. John Wapping, Middlesex, was made April 29, 1699, just before he embarked in the ship Warrington for "Guiney." It was probated March 8, 1699/1700. His sole heir and executor as "My Loving cosen Elias Arnaud of St. John Wapping, Middlesex." The will of-"John Arnaud, late of London, merchant now living at Islington," was made May 5, 1730, and was recorded May 11, 1730, in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Mention is made in this will of "My granddaughter, Jane Ester Fonretier, at her full age of twenty-one or day of marriage." The will of Anne Arnaud, widow of Peter Chastaigner, was made July 5, 1720, and was recorded July 7, 1726. Mention was made in this will of her daughter, Mary Combauld; son-in-law, Peter Combauld; grandchildren, Philip Bureau and Thomas Bureau; and son-in-law, Philip Bureau. In the record Anne is referred to as the widow of John Arnaud. Claudius Arnaud of Knightsbridge, Middlesex, gentlemen, made his will on August 4, 1748, and it was probated in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on December 1, 1748. His wife was Mary Arnaud. His daughter Margaret had married Jonathan Clarke of Knightsbridge. His daughter Ann had married James Marcell of the Strand, Middlesex. His daughter, Jane Arnaud, was at that time unmarried. Henry Arnaud of Plymouth made a will dated June 11, 1737, and left his estate to his wife, Esther Arnaud. Elias Arnaud in his will of April 15, 1689, willed his estate to his father, Jonas Arnaud. He appears to have died aboard H.M.S. Centurian. MISSOURI "Many Travelers Stopped at Arnold's Inn During Early Days of Area" by Mrs. Edwin Maxwell, The Boonville Advertiser, Boonville, Missouri, July 1953 (Cont. by Mrs. F. M. Durfey - Please note that Mrs. Durfey probably has further details) "I've never fully realized until in later years what a wonderful part of our nation we people in this particular section of the country live - the Boonslick country. It is practically teeming with adventure and interest. Lately I've been reading the earliest histories written about the Boonslick country from the time it was first visited by white Americans until the organization of Howard County. "The first authentic history we have was written by Levins and Drake in 1876. There was no previous record from which they could get information, only from persons living could the facts be obtained. The first Americans who are known positively to have visited this part of the country are Ira P. Nash, deputy United States surveyor, Stephen Hancock and Stephen Jackson, who came up the Missouri River in February, 1804, and located a claim on the public lands in Howard County, nearly opposite the mouth of the Lamine River. 43 Missouri (Cont'd) "At this time there is a record that the Barclay's and Boone's Licks, also a trading post about two miles northwest of Old Franklin, were in existence, proving that white Americans had been in this territory even before 1804. "Howard county originally comprised all northwest Missouri (as then bounded) and portions of southern Iowa. It presented an area of nearly 22,000 square miles and it was one third as large as the present state of Missouri and much larger than several of the New England states. "Original Howard county in 1816 included the following counties: Worth, Gentry, DeKalb, Clinton, Clay, Daviess, Caldwell, Ray, Mercer, Grundy, Livingston, Carroll, Putman, Sullivan, Linn, Chariton, parts of Schuyler, Adair, Macon, all of Randolph, parts of Monroe, and Audrain, all of Johnson, Henry, St. Clair, Saline, Pettis, Benton, Cooper, Moniteau, Morgan, Cole and a part of Miller. "The settlement of Moniteau township began comparatively early, in 1812. At this period Price Arnold located on Section 23. He was from Mercer county, Kentucky, and arrived in Franklin township in 1811. Here he remained until the following year and took a claim where his grandson, Matthew Arnold, Esq., lived until 1883, when the history I read was written. "I found at Fayette in the first record at the land office in Old Franklin, while Missouri was still a territory, where Price Arnold had been in the New Madrid earthquake and lost his possessions. This Howard county land was deeded to him by Taylor Berry. It stated that Arnold should have full possession even after and-when a patent should be given to the land, which meant after Missouri should be admitted as a state. "On the abstract the first transfer was made to Price Arnold September 11, 1821. There is nothing anywhere that I can find that tells about the building of the house, but I have been told by persons who remembered others saying the bricks were burned in a kiln on the place. We do not know the exact time lodging and serving meals started at the Inn. We do know positively that it was known and patronized as 'Arnold's Inn,' by travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. "A copy of Price Arnold's will which was enclosedwith the abstract to the land, made in 1821 and registered as Plat Number 1, follows: [There follows a complete copy of the will which ends "In testimony whereof, I have here unto set my hand and subscribed my name this first day of March A. D. 1829, eighteen hundred and twenty nine etc.] Editor's note: The above are Mrs. Durfey's insert.] "Feb. 12, 1873, James T. Arnold and his wife Sally deeded to George W Drake 228.69 acres. [See article by James T. Arnold about the Arnold Family.] "Inn Closed in 1870's - Just a few years ago Mrs. Lou Drake Pipes, now deceased, daughter of the late George W. Drake, mentioned above, told me that her father bought this land which was the Drake home for many years from Arnold. Mrs. Pipes was only six years old at the time her father purchased the farm but I think the Inn was still in operation or had not been closed very long when bought by Drake. She said they told her the meals had been served on the lower floor and travelers were put upstairs to sleep. I can remember a long flight of stairs that went up on the outside of the building on the west of the house. Mrs. Pipes said her father built rooms and porches as his family increased. It was a great place for family gatherings and was a beautiful country home." 44 Missouri (Cont'd) "I remember it many: years later when the Luther Pipes family came into possession. Mr. Pipes was a civic minded man and was interested in everything for the betterment of the community. Although no hard surfaced roads were in the county at that time the dirt road from Rocheport north which passed this place was widened and graded, and was one of the best in the county. "It followed the old trail route into New Franklin. The beautiful old house in the setting of native trees was very impressive. The family contributed much to the hospitality and refinement of the community. In 1913 the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a brown granite marker commemorating the existence of Arnold's Inn. It remains where the old gate stood leading into the front yard. [There axe two or three paragraphs relating to the change of hands and the bringing back the 225 acre farm to its former high standard of fertility The original Arnold land consisted of some 2000 acres, see census record 1850.] "Today a ghost of the once lovely old inn remains. Within a short time, if present plans are carried out, the few remaining brick rooms will be towed away and the witness of the story of past generations of the Arnold's Inn on the Santa Fe Trail will pass into oblivion." [There is nothing left now only the old cemetery on the Polly Arnold Jackman land. Again see Will. The Pipes family in this article, I believe are descended from the brothers of Betsy Pipes Arnold, wife of Price Arnold.] History of Missouri, Vol. III (p 115-116)-Hauck (Cont. by F. M. Durfey) "The muster-roll of Captain Sarsall Cooper's Company, April 1812, and which manifestly embraced all of the settlers then living in the upper Boonslick Country, on both sides of the river, preserved in Draper's Notes, Vol. XXII, pages 65-71, is not without interest, and gives us the names of the following officers and men." (After naming the officers he names among others Price Arnold and his son, John. Price Arnold No. #2083641, served as a private in Sarshall Cooper's Company, Lt. Dodge's Command of Missouri Militia, October 25, 1814. Place of residence given "Boon's Lick. Price Arnold and William Pipes were granted Tavern License, Howard County, 1821. Fort Kindied, Howard County, Missouri, located in Missouri River bottom, one and one fourth miles above Boonville and one mile north of the river. "In the spring of 1810, they returned, however, to the same locality with a company of 150 persons, embracing men, women and children, and thus effected the first permanent white settlement of the Boonslick Country .... In the spring of 1812, however, trouble with the Indians began .... Dec. 2, 1883. He claimed to have descended from Lord Arendall of England and his more immediate ancestor was probably Benjamin Arendall who lived in the Cheraw Dist. of South Carolina in 1790. He married Elvira Elizabeth, daughter of John Winston who was born in 1821, probably in Virginia and died at Belle, Mo. in 1912. The family lived on and near Pea Vine Creek for many years after their marriage and all of their children - eleven in number were born in this county. They moved to Miller County in the eighties and after the death of Mr. Arendall, his widow returned to this (Marie’s) County, making her home here until her death. Of the children born to him, two, Catherine and Edna died in infancy. The nine living to maturity were: Albert A., Laura Ann, John Henry, Annis, James T., Augustan L., Mary Alice, Augustine L., and Joseph B. Arendall. p. 821 Albert Allen Arendall, son of Joseph Jones Arendall, started his active career by driving an ox-team to Pike’s Peak over the Indian-infested plains when 16 years old and it is typical of his later years that he took his outfit there and back safely. He served in the Union Army during the duration of the Civil War, mostly as a wagoner. On May 30, 1867, he was married to Helen Mar Goforth at Stony Point. The young couple farmed a part of the Dave Hoop’s place for a few years and then moved to PayDown where he operated a woolen mill four years, later taking over the flour mill. In 1876 he was placed in charge of the Bray’s Mill on the Big Tavern in Miller County in which position he remained more than 30 years until the death of the owner led to the sale of the property. He died Sept. 30, 1925, and his widow is also long since dead. Two of their children, Augusta L. and Lady Maude Arendall died in infancy. Allen J. Arendall, the surviving son of Albert A. Arendall lives in Kansas City. His wife as Bessie Atkinson of Eldon. They have one son, Norman Arendall, also of Kansas City. May Mar Arendall, the living daughter of Albert A. Arnold - book found in library, McArthur, Ohio) (pages 1182-1185) [Editor's note: A full copy of this article is in our files. As much of it has already been covered by the above I am extracting various parts in hopes of adding additional information.] [Given in generation order.] Archibald Arnold was one of the pioneer settlers of Vinton County, where he continued to reside until his death, and it is believed that the Arnold family was founded in Virginia in the early colonial era of our national history. Archibald Arnold was twice married before leaving Virginia, and his second wife accompanied him and the children on the immigration to Ohio. He was a skilled machinist and soon after establishing his residence in Vinton County he opened a village blacksmith shop in the little Hamlet of McArthur, this pioneer smithy having been situated on what is now High Street and in close proximity to the present 52 Ohio (Cont'd) Presbyterian Church ....He was one-of the well known and highly honored citizens of Vinton County and continued his residence at McArthur until his death, in July, 1906, at the patriarchal age of ninety-three years. James H. Arnold, who was born in Virginia and who was a boy at the time of his parents' removal from the historic Old Dominion to Ohio. James H. continued as the skilled, successful blacksmith of Vinton County's judicial center for many years, was known for his great heart and strong and worthy manhood, and continued his activities at his trade until he retired in favor of his son, two years prior to his death, which occurred in February, 1910, his birth year having been 1834 and he having survived his venerable father by about four years. James H.'s wife, whose maiden name was Tryphenia Westcoat, was born in Elk Township, Vinton County, Ohio, about the year 1837, and she still maintains her home at McArthur, well preserved in physical and mental powers, and a loved pioneer woman of the county ....Of their children eight are still living and all are married and well established in life. William Henry Arnold .... was a young man at the time of his marriage, in 1885, to Miss Emma Kennard, who was born at Locust grove, Vinton County, on the 4th of October, 1862, a daughter of William J. and Martha (Culbertson) Kennard, both of whom were born and reared in Ohio, their marriage having been solemnized in Licking County. William H. and Emma (Kennard) Arnold hold membership in the Methodist Church in their home city, as does also their daughter Linnie A .... who is the older of their two children. The younger of the children is James Frederick, who was born in the year 1890 and who now maintains his residence in the City of St. Paul, Minnesota ....He married Miss Charlotte Pond, of Clinton County, Ohio. Linnie A. Arnold was born in Clinton County, Ohio, but was only three years of age when her parents established their home at McArthur, where she was reared to maturity and where she continued her studies in the public schools until she had completed the cirriculum of the high school of which she is now the efficient and popular principal. [At the time the article was written Miss Arnold was thirty years old and and had been a teacher for seven years. Regan 1968 [Editor's Note: Part V of this paper is a speech given by Carl. R. Arnold at the Arnold Reunion, Troy, Ohio, July 26, 1964, and the first part is an attempt to explain the unknown Arnold ancestor.] "This John Arnold had seven sons, some of whom probably came from England with the family in the sailing vessels. If there were any daughters, their names were not recorded. The sons were Butler; David, who later moved to Maryland; Benjamin, who went to Pennsylvania; John (the second), who stayed in North Carolina and who was our ancestor, being my great, great, great grandfather. "Of the other boys, William went to Pennsylvania; Frederick stayed in North Carolina; and one other whose name is not recorded also remained in North Carolina. I have listed these names as nearly as possible in the order of their births--the oldest first. "This John Arnold (called John the second), my great, great, great grandfather, moved over into South Carolina, into what is now Newberry County during the Revolutionary War. He had eight sons but no record is left of any daughters. These sons were George, Moses, William, John, Isaac, Jacob, James and the youngest whose name is lost. The five youngest sons all stayed in either North or South Carolina while the three oldest sons moved to Ohio. "George, the eldest, came to Warren Co., Ohio, in 1805; William, the third son, came to Ohio in 1806; while Moses, the second son and our ancestor, came to Ohio in 1808. (Orrio told me that one of the brothers migrated to Kentucky and from there to Ohio and another brother--several greats grandfathers-- migrated to Virginia and came to Ohio from there.) Mary Bales, could that have been John or Moses? "The Arnolds were Quakers and they came to Ohio from the South as a part of the migration of several hundred Quakers around the beginning of the last century. They encountered ridiclue and at times some persecution in some areas of the South because of their disapproval of slavery and their refusal to keep slaves. Also, they had the pioneer spirit. There was no slavery north of the Ohio River, but the danger from Indians had been quite severe. "....The first permanent settlement in Ohio was at Marietta in 1788 just 20 years before our ancestors came and Ohio was made a state in 1803, five years before Moses came. Many people in the area from Greenville south to the Ohio River can still trace their ancestry back to the Quakers. At one time a little later the Arnolds, Albrights, Jays, Townsends, and a few others planned to organize a Quaker meeting house south of Greenville, but for some reason it was never done. Instead they nearly all became Methodists. "Many Quakers, including our ancestors, settled first in Warren Co., Ohio, since it was considered to be safer from the Indians than places father north, such as Darke County. As we know, the old Lebanon College was a Quaker school established in 1844. A few of the Quakers joined the "Shakers' and were commonly known as the 'Shaking Quakers.' My father attended the old Lebanon College, probably in 1880 .... 54 Ohio (Cont'd) "Moses Arnold, son of John Arnold the second and my great great grandfather, was born in North Carolina in 1763 and married Rachel Lynch. The Lynches were also Quakers and of Welsh descent. They all came to Ohio in a wagon drawn by four horses, with their family 1808 when Moses, was 45 years of age. The route was by the Cumberland Gap to Cincinnati where they crossed the river by ferry. From Newberry, South Carolina, they then went to Greenville and Ashville, North Carolina, and Tazewell, Virginia, on their route. "They had seven children--five sons and two daughters: Isaac, Aaron, William, Lydia, David, George, and Mary. "Isaac, a younger brother of Moses Arnold, was born in 1784 and moved from the Carolinas to Mississippi, where one one of his daughters had gone after marriage. Luke and Martha Arnold, who always attended the Arnold reunions 50 years ago and whom some of you remember and who lived in Ansonia, Ohio, were descendants of Isaac. Isaac visited Ohio in 1834, coming by way of the Cumberland Gap in a one horse wagon. He considered moving to Ohio, but never did. He died in Mississippi in 1855 at the age of 71 years. "Aaron, another brother, was born in 1785 and died near Greenville in 1839 at 54 years of age. He left three children: William, Rachael, and Henry. William, just younger than Moses and known as 'Uncle Billy,' was born in 1789, came to Ohio, had 13 children--six by his first marriage and seven by his second wife. His first wife was Elizabeth Townsend and his second wife was Margaret Folkerth. He purchased 428 acres of land southeast of Greenville for $2 per acre. About the year 1827, he built the two-story brick house, which was among the first brick houses in the county and now a part of the Warner farm. He already had a log cabin near this site and was well known to oldtimers in the Jaysville area. William died in 1875 at the age of 86 years. "George Arnold, Moses' youngest son and my great grandfather, had six daughters and one son: Amelia, born April 7, 1821, married George Floyd Lydia, born Dec. 13, 1822, married Henry Houk John Chambers, born Aug 20, 1826 (our-grandfather), married Elizabeth Shepherd Elizabeth, born July 19, 1828 Rachel, born May 29, 1830, married David Shivedocker, died 1879 Matilda, born Sept. 1, 1832 Mary, born July 25, 1834, married Schlects, died 1865 "John Chambers Arnold, the third child and only son of George Arnold and his wife, Mary Dynes, was born in the old 'weaning' cabin on August 20, 1826. He married Mary Elizabeth Shepherd on January 14, 1847. He was 20 and she lacked one month of being 17. She was born on February 10, 1830. They had 14 children in 24 years, five of whom died in infancy before the age of 12 years. Mary Elizabeth, my grandmother, died July 11, 1888; at the age of 58 and grandfather remarried three times after she died. John Chambers, my grandfather, died June 25, 1906, less than two months before he would have been 80. All nine children who had lived to maturity were at his funeral and the picture of the group, which is available here today, was taken that day. "The children of John Chambers Arnold who lived to maturity were as follows: 1. George W., b 2/8/1849, m.
