All contributions for publication or comments to the Editor, Mrs. Hazel Arnold MacIvor, should be sent to the above address. Purpose: The purpose of The Arnold Family Association of the South is to bring into contact with one another all those who are researching Arnold and allied families, who either originated in the South, or came through it and stayed long enough to leave records. We hope to do this by publishing an Arnold Family Annual Newsletter which will contain records of a private and public nature on the local, state, and national level. Our ultimate purpose is to publish an Arnold Family History containing as many branches of the Arnold family as can be documented. To this purpose, the Arnold Family Historian- Genealogist will accept, evaluate, file, preserve, and possibly publish records as they are received. Publications: The Arnold Family Association presently publishes an Annual Newsletter and has published a Quarterly since its inception in 1970. Complete sets of the Quarterlies are available from the secretary at $11.00 for each set of four. This includes an index to each set. Quarterlies can be bought separately for $3.00 per copy. The Association has also published, Hazel Arnold MacIver’s SOME ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN ARNOLD OF KING WILLIAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA AND GREENVILLE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA. A few copies are available at $11.00 per copy. Membership: All individuals, regardless of surname, libraries or societies may apply for membership, which is on a yearly basis, beginning on 1 August of one year and ending 31 July of the next. Membership dues are $5.00 annually. Membership entitles one to receive the Association’s Annual Newsletter free of charge. All members, other than libraries and societies, are required to complete applications and fill in pedigree charts to earliest-known ancestor. Requests should be made to Ann A. Hennings, 6600 Placid Street, Falls Church, Virginia, 22043. Please make check or money order to The Arnold Family Association of the South. No cash, please. Holdings: The Arnold Family Association will place all of its records, publications, books, etc. in the hands of its Historian-Genealogist. In the event of his/her death, the surviving officers will decide the place of repository. Genealogical Inquiries: The Arnold Family Association keeps a record of all members’ surnames in its files. Members will be furnished upon request, if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope, the names and addresses of others working in similar families. It will also furnish lists of genealogists (in most cases supplied by Archives in Southern States), but it cannot assume responsibility for nor guarantee the nature and accuracy of work done by any such genealogist. Editorial Policy: Neither the Editor, or The Arnold Family Association of the South and/or the members of the Editorial Staff, assume any responsibility for error of fact or opinion expressed by contributors. It is our earnest desire to publish only reliable source materials of a genealogical nature. Materials for publication are welcome and should be sent to the Editor. Please type such materials or send Xerox copies of original records. -3- From the Editor’s Pen: -4- At present, we do not have a President to head our organization. It is felt that someone bearing the surname Arnold should hold this office. If readers have any ideas or suggestions regarding a person for this office, Ann and I will be happy to hear from you. The position is largely honorary and entails few duties. We are in process of reorganization. Mrs. Rex Arnold has resigned as one of the Co-Chairmen of our Family Group Program. This important program must go forward. Could we please have a volunteer to do this work? We badly need someone to index the Newsletter. It is a job that requires no typing and can be done a little at a time. At present, Ann and I are carrying the full load. If AFAS is to continue, we must have help. We also need someone to type the newsletter. We had to pay to have this issued typed. This money could have been used to buy Arnold records. Please show your faith in our Association and write Ann that you will be happy to help in any way. It is September 1975 as I write this. It is hoped you will have this issue in your hands before January 1, 1976. May you enjoy it and may it help you. God bless and keep you all in His loving care throughout the coming year. Editor, Hazel Arnold MacIvor Meet our Members: Since our last publication, the following persons have joined our association: 183. Mr. Brian H. Arnold, P. O. Box 213, New Waverly, Texas 77358. No pedigree chart received as yet. 184. Mrs. Ann C. Long, 4101 West 7th Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Earliest proved Arnold ancestor: SARAH ELIZABETH ARNOLD, born 1832, Logan County, Kentucky—died 1919, Texas, daughter of REV. J. E. ARNOLD and CATHERINE JACKSON. 185. Mr. Lule K. Williams, 5000 Rock River Drive, Fort Worth, Teaxs 76103. Earliest proved Arnold ancestor: REBECCA ARNOLD, born 1630, married HENRY WHITE, Albemarle Parish, Surry County, Virginia. -5- ARNOLD/ARENDELL, etc. of North Carolina The following county records are by no means complete. If you find your ancestor in a given North Carolina County, you should conduct your own research in the primary court records. The 1790 census for all Arnolds/Arendells in North Carolina was given in AFAS, I, No. 4, as well as a number of other North Carolina records. The reader should refer to that issue for a more complete picture of Arnolds/Arendells in the counties. The Editor, Hazel Arnold MacIvor Albemarle Precinct Albemarle Precinct was form 1663, one of the three original counties. It was discontinued in 1751. JACOB NORFLEET, lived in Gates Co., NC on land he inherited from his father, which was originally in Nansemond Co., VA., but after the survey the barn and grist mill were in Virginia and the house in NC, so they became residents of NC. I think the nearest town is Corapeake (originally Orapeake), NC but very near the VA line. ELIZABETH and JACOB’s children were: dau. Elizabeth dau. Pleasant Lawrence dau. Easter son Kinchen b. 9-21-1775; m. 6-4-1800 Sarah Riddick dau. Mourning, b. 10-9-1779 (posthumous); m. 1808 James Rea of Winton, d 3-24-1842 Hertford Co., NC, leaving dau. Hannah Pack Rea. Jacob Norfleet’s will dated 12-12-1778, p. Gates Co. Aug. Ct. 1780. Elisha Hare was named Guardian for Mourning Norfleet (not named in her father’s will), and on Dec. 28, 1790 married his ward’s sister, Easter Norfleet. Elisha Hare’s parents, Moses and Honore Speight Hare, lived on adjoining lands, according to the Aug. 27, 1779 deed of WM. ARNELL to (his bro.) EDWARD ARNELL, of land inherited from EDWARD ARNELL, (SR.). On Nov. 18, 1780, EDWARD ARNELL sold for 3600 pounds Continental money to Elizabeth Norfleet a part of his land, the deed being witnessed by JOHN ARNOLD and Elizabeth Norfleet. (The latter presumably being the oldest daughter, Eliz.). ELIZABETH (ARNOLD) NORFLEET on 1-25-1781 signed the division of the estate of husband JACOB NORFLEET between children: Elizabeth Norfleet, Pleasant Lawrence Norfleet, Kinchen Norfleet, Mourning Norfleet and Easter Norfleet, in that order. The division of the estate was made pursuant to a Court Order, the dividers being: EDWARD ARNOLD, James Norfleet and Jethro Ballard. I have copies of these papers, also Guardian reports of Elisha Hare for 1791-1792 and 1793…covering the time after the death of the mother, who evidently died after the 1790 census was made. Returning to EDWARD ARNOLD---the 1777 Chowan Co. Court (March Ct) Session (7th page from beginning of Court Minutes) an inventory of the estate of EDWARD ARNELL was returned by WILLIAM ARNALL, who filed a motion to divide the estate, and an order was issued that Jacob Hunter, Dempsey Sumner, Luke Sumner, Esq., and Mr. Elisha Hunter divide it. In June 1777 there was an order that James Knight, Guardian of EASTER ARNELL, orphan of EDWARD ARNELL, make bond of 500 pounds with Jacob Hunter and WILLIAM ARNELL as securities. (Evidently JAMES KNIGHT had married PLEASANT ARNELL before EDWARD ARNELL had made his will in 1777, and James Knight would naturally become EASTER’S guardian if she made her home with her married sister.) (JOHN & RICH’D ARNELL were also minors). -13- (Communications cont’d) I checked on Jacob Hunter (b. 1737 d. 1787) and found that his wife was named Sarah Hill; I did this just on the chance that surely there must have been a family connection, and there yet may be one…since I don’t know the name of EDWARD ARNELL (2)’s wife. I, too, found the GEORGE ARNOLD in Surry Tithable list 1674, and WM. 1678 in Lawnes’ Creek P’sh, and WM in Surry 1688, THOMAS in Surry 1698, etc., also I found in VA Land Patents, the John Barefield grant of 150 acres Southern Br., Nacimon River 10-30-1662 for 3 persons: Susan Haynes, Mary Trotter, and WILLIAM ARNOLD; and in studying the Mayo map in the Richmond Library, I noticed how close the Southern Br. of Nansemond River was to Surry County, sufficiently to keep me believing that WILLIAM ARNOLD of Surry was the progenitor of EDWARD who died between 1748 and 1752, naming wife, PLEASANT. Upper Parish (of Nansemond) Vestry Book (1743-1793) p. 37 In lists of lands “processioned” show that in 1747 processioners were to work ‘a line between Peter Franklin and EDWARD ARNALL.’ p. 188 And on December 30, 1767 processioners were to renew all the lines from Cypress Swamp to the Orapeake (Corapeak) Road…’ to a line between John Brinkley and EDWARD ARNAL, with Dan’l Franklin present. To a line between EDWARD ARNAL and Eleanor Franklin with Dan’l Franklin and Thos. Wilkins present.’ p. 211 In 1772 the processioners reported ‘a line between James Knight and the following: John Riddick, Luke Sumner and EDWARD ARNELL; a line between John Knight and EDWARD ARNELL and a line between John Knight & James Knight…so we learn that James Knight was a neighbor of EDWARD ARNELL, as well as husbland of EASTER ARNELL. p. 234 Then in 1775 on Dec. 9th, the processioning included a line between Daniel Frankline & EDWD ARNAL and between Ellener Frankline & EDWD ARNAL, Luke Sumner & John Riddick present. In the 1777 settlement of the division of Estate of EDWARD ARNELL (son of EDWARD AND PLEASANT) no wife was mentioned but another descendant of the line, Dr. C. T. Smith, found some reference to EDWARD’S wife having been a daughter of William and Anne Hunter, which would support the two Hunter brothers, Jacob and Elisha, being named as dividers of the 1777 estate…In Mar. 1777 the inventory was filed by the son WILLIAM, and the court ordered the division to be made by Jacob and Elisah Hunter, Dempsey and Luke Sumner. In June 1777 James Knight was appointed Guardian to the minor daughter EASTER ARNELL; and letter of Admin. were issued to WILLIAM ARNELL; a deed of gift from EDWARD to his son RICHARD was produced and proof postponed to the next Court. WILLIAM ARNELL was appointed Guardian to his brothers JOHN ARNELL and RICHARD ARNELL, with Jacob Hunter and James Knight as securities. When the division was returned, WILLIAM ARNELL was ordered to sell the perishable part of the estate for JOHN & RICHARD, James Knight ordered to sell perishable part of the estate of EASTER ARNELL. In September the Deed of Gift from EDWARD to his son RICHARD was proved by Thomas Parker and WM. ARNELL. In December the accounts of sale for EASTER was returned by James Knight, and for JOHN and RICHARD by WILLIAM ARNELL. -14- (Communications cont’d) The son JOHN ARNOLD made his will Oct. 7, 1823, in Gates Co. NC proved Feb. Ct. 1824, naming wife SARAH, daughters PLEASANT BENTON, MARY BENTON, and ELIZABETH ARNOLD, grandsons, RIDDICK, JOHN & SETH ARNOLD (sic)… My earliest North Carolina references are from Higher-Court Records, Colonial Court Records 1670-1696, pp. 14-15, Feb. 4, 1691 Petition of ELIZ. ARNOLD for all her children’s cattle returned to her, and order for her give security to the Council to pay her husband’s debts, and that she have possession of the moveable estate of LAWRENCE ARNOLD, late of this County. Pages 369-372: 1685 Jurors included LAWRENCE ARNOLD and the same 1686; also named as member Grand Jury prior to December 1686. Page 392: Aug. 1693 Petition exhibited by ELIZA. ARNOLD showing her husband LAWRENCE ARNOLD left his estate to his son JOHN ARNOLD to be enjoyed at 13 yrs. of age but being uncapable to manage it by reason of his tender years asked the Court to choose Jonathan Bateman for his guardian. Order that Jonna. Bateman who married the widow be his guardian and that the mother bring an inventory of all estate to the next Court. I find nothing to connect to my WM & EDWARD. Your (HJAM) earliest Chowan Co., tax list Mar 25, 1731 reflected 400a and 1 tithe…with the will of EDWARD ARENDELL 11 Nov. 1731, prob. Jan. 1732, wife ISABELLE, sons EDWARD, THOMAS; Daus. MARY, REBECCA. Chronologically these may be of my line because of the time element, however, one of my records shows my EDWARD receiving land from his brother, WILLIAM born in Fauquier Co. VA. This is source for my trying to find the parents of these men in Virginia rather than in NC. (The WM. (b Fauquier) was married to NANCY BERRY, who d. 1811). Maybe the Chowan Co. EDWARD (d 1731) is the one I belong to. 2nd letter (7 Aug. 1975) I, too, feel that ARUNDELL/ARNELL/ARNOLD are all from the same source, particularly so, in the early English documents. In Mrs. Cross’ “Nansemond Chronicles 1608-1800”…there are very few ARNOLD references (the book has no index) but on p. 144 she cites “Land Pat.” “Wm. Baker came in “Jonathan” 1609. John Barefield 150 acres Southern Branch Nancimon River 10-30-1662 for 3 persons: Susan Haynes, Mary Trotter, WM ARNOLD.” Page 172 (probably from “Hathaway’s”, Vol. II, p 456) “Thos Harris 3-2-1658 N. Page 174 “Halek Heres (and others) 2-20-1669 for JOYCE ARNOLD.” I plan to scan this book for more and also will try to find the record about WM b. Fauquier Co. VA land to his brother EDW. It seems it was in some out- of-print book—perhaps “Memories & Records of Eastern NC Families” M. N. Lambeth—I do not have the book but made note of the page. -15- Editor’s Comment: HJAM The land patents and wills given below throw light on possible origins of Mrs. Thelma Martineau’s ARNOLD line. EDWARD ARNOLD, 170 acres of New Land in upper Parish of Nansemond County near a place called Arapeak*(1), adjoining William Kelly*(2), and William Sumner*(3), 28 Apr.1711. Book 10, p. 30. EDWARD ARNOLD, 225 acres of New Land in upper Parish of Nansemond County near a place called Oropeak, adjoining John Perritt’s*(4) land, 24 Jan. 1717. Book 10, p 357. Then we have the will of EDWARD ARENDELL, Chowan County, NC signed 11 Nov. 1731; probated 8 Jan. 1732. Executors: wife, ISABELLE, and Thomas Pierce*(5). Sons: EDWARD & THOMAS; Daughters: RACHAEL, MARY and REBECCA. Witnesses: Heshton Noe*(6); John Bennett*(7); Frances Pettitt*(8). *(1) Orapeak (now called Corapeak) was then in Virginia, now in Gates County. Gates County was formed 1778 from Chowan County. The boundary between Virginia and North Carolina was not finally settled until 1728**. Thus, persons living in the disputed area held grants from both Virginia and North Carolina. ** William Byrd, “Histories of the Dividing Line betwixt Virginia and North Carolina,” Dover Publications, New York, 1967. *(2) William Kelly, Jr. was a witness to William Haig’s will signed 4 Nov. 1718 in Pasquotank, NC, and when James Sumner died between March and May in 1750, he bequeathed land to his son, David, “land whereon David Kelly now lives.” The Kellys, Sumners and ARNOLDS were neighbors and probably relatives. *(3) John Sumner died in Chowan between April 1754 and January 1755 who left son, William, land he “bought of Joseph and Gregory Stallings and John Knight”; he left his “land on Orapeak Swamp” to son Jacob; land to son Moses that he “bought to William Webb.” Two of the witnesses to his will were Joseph Jones and Roxanna Reddick. Capt. Joseph Bridgers brought over Edward Sumners 7 June 1666. The land he received for this headright lay on the Black Swamp in Nasemond County. Nugent, “Cavaliers and Pioneers,” p. 559. Colonials referred to some Virginia rivers as “swamps,” thus this Black Swamp is today the Blackwater River that flows out of Virginia into North Carolina and is the dividing line between lower Nansemond and Southampton Counties. Southampton was formed from Nansemond and Isle of Wight in 1749. The Blackwater River becomes the Chowan River in North Carolina and divides Gates and Hertford Counties, both of which were cut out of Chowan County. *(4) John Perrott had received 900 acres in Nansemond County on 2 July 1650. Cf Nugent, “Cavaliers and Pioneers,” p. 179. Earlier he had received 450 acres of land which he sold to Robert Newman on 11 Nov. 1635. In this patent he is referred to as being of Marry’s Mount. There is a John Parratt, age 36 in Mr. Daniel Gookin’s Muster of 1624, taken at Newport News. The John Perritt who was an adjoining neighbor of EDWARD ARNOLD’S in 1711 was probably the son or grandson of this earlier John Perrott. -16- (Editor’s comments cont’d-HJAM) *(5) A Capt. William Pierce had been early in Virginia and had a patent on Warwick River by 1619. He is known to have had a daughter Joane who married John Rolfe whose second wife, Pocahontas, had died earlier in England. A William Pierce died in Westmoreland County and named deceased son, James, and grandson, William. He had daughters Elizabeth Bridges, Mary Rawsey and Margaret Graham. The relationship between Capt. Pierce and Pierce of Westmoreland has not been established. John Pierce, who died before 13 September 1682 in Perquimans County left a son, Thomas, and a son-in-law, Thomas Daw, sons John and Joseph. Son John died in Perquimans before Oct. 9, 1726 and left sons Copeland and Thomas. Joseph Pierce died before 6 June 1700 in Perquimans and named his brother, Thomas, in his will. Then the elder Thomas Pierce died by 30 March 1732 in Perquimans. He named his sons Thomas, Joseph and John in his will as well as his son-in-law, Peter Jones (daughter Mary’s husband). His son Thomas Pierce died in Chowan before October Court, 1756. He left daughters Mary Nixon (wife of Phineas Nixon), Jemima and Kesiah Newby. It was probably this Thomas who witnessed the will of EDWARD ARENDELL. *(6) Heshton Noe is not found in “Abstracts of North Carolina Wills,” the source used for all of the wills given above and below. But an Elizabeth Hestin was brought over by Robert Eley 17 Sept. 1639. Land for his headright lay in Isle of Wight (later named Nansemond) County. *(7) John Bennett was probably of that family of Bennetts that lived in Curritick (taken from Albemarle) and might have been connected in some way to the large family of Bennetts of which Richard was the most famous member, having served as governor of Virginia. He had been a Puritan but became a Quaker toward the end of his life. In view of the fact that many eastern North Carolina ARNOLDS were Quakers and connected to Quaker families (Nixon, Newby, Stallings, etc.) it would be well for descendants of this family to study Hinshaw’s Quaker records for that area as well as Boddie’s “Colonial Surry and Isle of Wight.” The Pierce-Bennett connection is treated in Annie L. Jester’s “Adventurers of Purse and Person.” Cf. also numerous references to John Bennett in “Cavaliers and Pioneers.” *(8) Francis Pettitt received 300 acres in Northampton County on 14 October 1665 (Northampton originally Accomac). Getting back to EDWARD ARNOLD, there is a notice in Nugent, p. 363, that one EDWARD ARRUNDELL was brought over by Thomas Broughton by 20 November 1657. What follows is purely speculative: We note in Mrs. Martineau’s first letter that THOMAS ARNOLD, a carpenter, who had come to Virginia on the “Culpeper”, appointed Robert Perry, a merchant, to recover the estate of THOMAS’S brother EDWARD ARNOLD, from James Barnett and John Nicholas, executor’s of ANN ARNOLD, EDWARD’S widow. Thus we know that both EDWARD and his wife were dead by 17 March 1682/1683 and THOMAS, who was heir (indicating EDWARD left no male heirs), was trying to recover his estate. -17- (Editor’s comments cont’d-HJAM) It is possible that this THOMAS ARNOLD, with the proceeds from his brother EDWARD’s estate, went very early to the eastern North Carolina area and founded the large ARNOLD/ARUNDELL family that is found there. It is further possible that EDWARD ARNOLD of the land grants and of the 1731-1732 will are one and the same and the eldest son of this THOMAS ARNOLD. What would be more natural than to name a son after a brother who left his estate to THOMAS and had no males to perpetuate his name? Note that EDWARD ARRENDELL names his sons, EDWARD and THOMAS. The first named is undoubtedly for himself and perhaps for this uncle. The second could be for THOMAS ARNOLD or perhaps for Thomas Pierce (maybe the father of Isabelle—though an Isabelle is not named as daughter in either of the Pierce wills given above. The editor has seen several references to this THOMAS ARNOLD in the early NC records, among them the will of John Arderne which THOMAS ARNOLD witnessed 22 October 1707. CF. Grimes, p 9, and note that Mrs. Martineau found a THOMAS ARNOLD in the Surry County Tithables in 1689. Cf. also, THOMAS ARNOLD’s deed in Beaufort Co. (then in Bath) in 1701 in which Nicholas Daw is a witness. See above where Thomas Daw was a son-in-law of John Pierce who died in Perquimans before 1682. There is no doubt that these numerous ARNOLD families are related. Extensive, in-depth research should reveal how they are related. The second EDWARD ARNOLD died some time before April 1752 in Chowan, when his wife, PLEASANT, and son, EDWARD, were made executors of his estate. In addition to his son, he left a daughter named HANNAH STALLINGS. This EDWARD and JOHN who died in Perquimans (1735) both had crests on their seals. An examination of these seals might establish that they were of the same line of ARNOLDS. The third EDWARD ARNOLD’s estate was divided in 1777 in Chowan County—his sons were named as EDWARD, JOHN and RICHARD ARNELL; his daughters were ELIZABETH NORFLEET (Mrs. Martineau’s ancestress), PLEASANT KNIGHT, BATHSHEBA and EASTER ARNELL. This EDWARD ARNOLD’s (ARNELL) wife is proved to be ALICE HUNTER by her mother’s will who died in Chowan before October 1751. She named her son William Hunter and EDWARD ARNOL her executors. Her daughters were named as Judith Bland, Ann Winborn, Hester Knight and ALICE ARNOL. She had made her will 24 May 1749. See Mrs. Martineau’s letter regarding ALICE ARNOLD’s maiden name. The will your editor found substantiates her information. This brings us to the final point of this ARNOLD/ARRENDELL excursis. The editor firmly believes that the ARNOLD and ARENDELL families of southern Virginia and eastern North Carolina are one and the same. Jeanette Osteen has also come to that conclusion in her independent research. The ARENDELLS who read this will no doubt be upset, as your editor has encountered hostility when she has tendered this suggestion. It should also be remembered that in Colonial times persons cared little how their names were spelled. The editor has seen documents where a man spelled his name three different ways in the same document. It is only very recently that we have become so particular about how our name is spelled. -18- (Editor’s comments, cont’d-HJAM) The Arendells of Granville County, the progenitors of the Spartanburg County, South Carolina and Logan County, Kentucky ARNOLDS/ARENDELLS are descendants of this Chowan County group. We first pick up these ARENDELLS in Granville County around 1754 when BENJAMIN, JAMES and THOMAS are shown in a Muster of Militia in that county. Their father is proved to be RICHARD ARENDELL who died some time between 1758 and 1762. It should be remembered that Granville was taken from Edgecombe in 1746. Edgecombe was taken from Bertie in 1741 and Bertie was taken from Chowan in 1722. Your editor proposes that THOMAS ARENDELL, son of EDWARD ARENDELL who died in Chowan before January 1732, could very well be RICHARD ARENDELL’s father. The records of Edgecombe and Bertie should be sifted very carefully, and note the names the Granville group uses; Thomas, Bridges, Bennett, etc., all names associated with the earliest EDWARD ARNOLD of record in Chowan County. Some of the members of this large family became noted by the name ARNELL (and the Coweta County, Georgia group), others became ARNOLDS and even forgot they ever were ARENDELLS (Mrs. Marian Hammers had this experience in contacting ARNOLDS who had been ARENDELLS several generations earlier), while others have stubbornly stuck to the name ARENDELL under a variety of spellings (ARRENDEL, ARUNDOL, ARRUNDALL, ARRUNDELL, ARUNDLE, etc.). What the name was originally, your editor cannot say. It should also be remembered that both names, ARNOLD and ARENDELL, have as their root the work eagle, therefore both names have the same meaning. Whether ARNOLD or ARENDELL is the name used by a branch of this family, it is a proud name—as proud as the eagle whose noble wings sent it soaring against the sky. But all ARNOLD and ARENDELL searchers should keep an open mind and remember not to pass up a record just because it isn’t spelled the way the searcher thinks it should be. In conclusion, searchers for origins of Northeastern North Carolina ARNOLDs must look to Virginia as the place from whence their ancestors came, as historians are in agreement that it was settlers from Virginia who first came to this area. -19- Pasquotank County Formed 1670 from Albemarle Precinct. 1798 Pasquotank Marriage Licenses 1797-1801 1798 Jan. 4 – MICAJAH PANDLETON – MIRIAM ARNOLD (JNCG – Vol. III 1957, p 365) Tyrrell County Formed 1729 from Albemarle Precinct. 1786 (1783-87 Census) JOSEPH ARNOLD 1 white male 21-60; 6 white males under 21 or over 60; 4 females; 0 slaves (year 1786) 1800 Census p. 668 JOSEPH ARNOLD, JUN’R 00100 10010 04 p. 668 JOSEPH ARNOLD, SR. 10110 00000 60 p. 676 WILLIAM ARNOLD 00010 10000 00 Bath County Formed 1696 and discontinued in 1739. It would seem THOMAS ARNOLD, SR. had died before that time (and his land was not divided until Jan. 1796), or else he was “away.” Wasn’t EDWARD his son? ARNOLD HENRY ARNOLD JOHN ARNOLD THOMAS ARNOLD of Pitt County (contributed by Marian Carter Ledgerwood): There was a THOMAS ARNOLD, planter on Pamlico River in (then) Bath Co. in 1701. He deeded 300 acres to William Brice in that year. Witnesses: Nic. Daw, Nic. Taylor. THOMAS ARNOLD who seems to be father of the several boys (who divided his land in 1796) is probably the THOMAS ARNOLD who was mentioned in Grant Books as early as 1779. He was a Chain Bearer on several grants involving Boyds, Dixons, Jones, Armstrong, Nelson, Watkins, Salter, etc. THOMAS ARNAL got his grant of 175 acres in 1782. In 1782 the name of WILLIAM ARNAL began to appear as chain bearer or witness. (I believe he was THOMAS’ son, WILLIAM.) John Watkins deeded 25 acres to THOMAS ARNOLD, SR. (no date—probably about 1784). It is interesting to note the name Grimes appears with THOMAS ARNOLD several times, about 1786. WILLIAM ARNOLD deeded 70 acres to Demsie Grimes – 1787 – land which adjoined THOS. ARNOLD, father of WILLIAM ARNOLD (according to the deed). John Taylor deeded 80 acres to WM ARNOLD in 1788. In 1790 census, there were 2 ARNOLDS in Pitt Co.: ELIZABETH ARNOLD had 2 males over 16, 3 females, 0 slaves WILLIAM ARNOLD had 1 male over 16, 5 under 16, 2 females, 0 slaves. Apparently ELIZABETH’s husband, THOMAS SR, was already dead, or else he was gone. WILLIAM may have had some of the younger brothers in his household. In 1800, ELIZABETH ARNOLD appears again, and she has only 1 male in her household, he being 16-26. She was over 45, and had a female under 10, and 2 daughters 10-16. Others in the county and on the same page (except for EDWARD, who was on page after) include WILLIAM, who was 26-45 (therefore born 1755-74), HENRY, and JAMES who were 16-26 (therefore born 1774-84) and EDWARD on the page after who was also 16-26. -24- (THOS. ARNOLD of Pitt Co. mcl cont’d) Incidentally, in 1800, THOMAS ARNOLD was in Beaufort Co. He was 26-45, as was his wife, and they had a boy and a girl under 10. I suppose he was THOMAS, JR. and of course the one who died 1812. In the 1790’s the name THOS. ARNOLD appears once—in Aug. 1795. He was a witness for deed of William Buck to Uriah Elks. Perhaps this was THOS. JR.? In Jan. of 1796, the land of THOS. ARNOLD, dec’d, was divided among sons HENRY, THOMAS, WILLIAM, and JAMES (Edward not mentioned—why?) In 1797, JAMES ARNOLD sold 100 acres to Isaac Boyd, and it was land of his father, THOMAS ARNOLD, dec’d. But that wasn’t the last mention of JAMES in the deed book. In 1804, WILLIAM, JAMES and PATTY ARNOLD sold 100 acres and they were stated to be heirs of THOMAS ARNOLD, deceased. JAMES ARNOLD isn’t mentioned any more in Pitt Co. Must have left the country. In 1808, WILLIAM ARNOLD was in Beaufort Co. NC. He sold land in Pitt Co. along with William Buck of Georgia. (Bucks mentioned several times.) In 1812, EDWARD ARNOLD is mentioned in Pitt Co. records as being in Greene Co. Apparently he sold to HENRY ARNOLD, right to land left to THOMAS ARNOLD, deceased, his brother—former owner THOMAS ARNOLD, deceased, father and ELIZABETH ARNOLD, wife of THOMAS ARNOLD. (Greene Co. NC is west of Pitt Co.) In 1815, one JOHN ARNOLD witnessed a land sale of Gorham to Simpson; HENRY ARNOLD also witnessed (something) in 1815. To sum it up: THOMAS ARNOLD, born before 1755, probably; died before 1790(?)—at least by Jan. 1796. Wife ELIZABETH, born before 1755. She was still alive as late as 1800. THOMAS could have been “away” in 1790. Or, he may have died before then and ELIZABETH kept the land intact until all the boys reached 16 or so, then they divided it in Jan. 1796. In 1790, ELIZABETH had 2 males over 16 in her household—probably THOMAS JR. and perhaps JAMES (One person said James was listed as 26-45 in 1800—this must be checked). WILLIAM was listed in his own household, but he had 5 males under 16 (perhaps the younger boys). ELIZABETH had 3 females in her household—herself and 2 daughters. WILLIAM had 2 females—his wife, no doubt, and a daughter? In 1800, ELIZABETH was over 45, had a female under 10—if this is a daughter, either old THOMAS was still alive in 1790 or there was something “irregular.” Could be a granddaughter. She had the 2 daughters 10-16, so in 1790 they would have been less than 6 years old. No doubt one of them was named PATTY? Or was PATTY the name of JAMES wife in 1804? Probably so. -25- (THOMAS ARNOLD of Pitt Co. mcl cont’d) ELIZABETH had a male who was 16-26 with her in 1800. Who was he? The sons—WILLIAM, HENRY, JAMES and EDWARD were listed by themselves; we presume THOMAS JR. was the one in Beaufort Co. who was 26-45. Or was THOMAS JR. with his mother, and therefore one of the younger boys? Maybe that is the way it was and he died in 1812. (So, who was the THOMAS who was 26-25 in Beaufort Co.?) Children of THOMAS SR. and ELIZABETH: 1. WILLIAM born 1755-74, on records by 1782 2. JAMES born either 1755-74 or 1774-84 (depending on which version of the 1800 census we believe—I am inclined to think he was born 1774-84) had wife but no children in 1800. Sold land in 1797 and 1804—no further. 3. HENRY born 1774-84, appears on records as a witness, 1791. 4. EDWARD born 1774-84, appears on record as witness in 1796. Alone in 1800. Sold his portion of land in 1812, at which time he was in Greene Co. 5. THOMAS JR.—perhaps in Beaufort Co. in 1800, in which case he was one of the older boys, born 1755-74. Or he may have been with his mother in 1800, in which case he was born 1774-84. He died in 1812. 6. Daughter born 1784-1790 7. Daughter born 1784-1790 8. (Daughter? Born 1790-1800)(granddaughter?) But – ELIJAH ARNOLD – I know absolutely nothing about him, and so far, have found no trace of him in the library, etc. The first record (above) was recorded in an old Family Bible, which burned with the original ARNOLD homeplace, many years ago. SAMUEL ARNOLD (b ca 1750, d Dec. 1831) married 5 Sept. 1771 ELIZABETH WRIGHT, born in Fauquier Co. VA, daughter of Capt. John Wright, Jr. and Ann Williams. (SAMUEL and ELIZ. were, both, 1 of 18 children… -45- (Surry Co. NC – information from Mrs. Tom Sprinkle, cont’d) …my g.g.g.g.-grandparents) SAMUEL was in the Rev. War; wounded; prisoner of war. Made guns after the war in Hamptonville, NC (formerly Surry Co., now Yadkin Co. NC) SAMUEL and wife, ELIZABETH (WRIGHT) ARNOLD moved from VA to Surry Co. NC around 1776. I have a copy of SAMUEL’S will, dated Mar. 17, 1829, in which he stated that his son, WILLIAM, had already received his “full part” of the estate. WILLIAM ARNOLD, son of SAMUEL and ELIZABETH, was born about 1772 in Fauquier Co. VA; married in Greenville Co. SC; died after 1838. He married NANCY BERRY, daughter of Hudson Berry and his wife, Sarah Anthony. NANCY b. 1777, died 1811. WILLIAM and NANCY (BERRY) ARNOLD had a son, LAWSON TERRY ARNOLD, born 11 June 1800 in Greenville Co., SC. LAWSON TERRY married 1827 MARY MACHEN, daughter of John Machen and Dicey (Holland) Machen. LAWSON TERRY died 1891 at Anderson, SC. SAMUEL ARNOLD and ELIZABETH WRIGHT ARNOLD had the following children: 1. JAMES ARNOLD (1783-1841) m. lst HANNAH BORIN; m. 2nd MARGARET BAGBY. 2. ELISHA ARNOLD (engaged to be married at the time of his death in Hamptonville, NC.) 3. JOHN ARNOLD went to KY 4. THOMAS ARNOLD went to KY (JOHN or THOMAS married a Miss BRADFORD) 5. Married SARAH SMITH, b. 1793 in NC d. 1881 in Tenn. daughter of Samuel Smith and Sarah Powell. This Eligah had a son, JOHN ARNOLD. 8. DANIEL ARNOLD (ca. 1796/7-1839) married SARAH HARDESTY. She was One of the first school teachers in NC. (This DANIEL was my g.g.g.-grandfather.) (Part of these children lived in Wartrace, Tenn., Coffee Co., Tenn. and Bedford Co. Tenn.) Referring to the 1850 Surry Co. census, page 400 house 582 fam. 585, JACOB ARNOLD b 1822, NC with wife SUSANNAH b. 1821 NC and children. When I requested a copy of my THOMAS ARNOLD’S will, the clerk at Dobson sent a copy of THOMAS ARNOLD, SR’s will, dated 12 May 1822, married SOFIAH (?) and names sons: JOHN, THOMAS JR., WILLIAM, and JACOB ARNOLD. This was NOT my THOMAS and so far, I have been unable to find who he is and where he lived. Referring to the above census records – could this JACOB be the son of THOMAS, SR. of the 1822 will? They named one of their daughters, Sophia E. I still don’t know how this family makes a connection with my line. p. 403 house 607 family 610 – this is my family. Imes and moved to Missouri; her sister, SALLY, married a Blackburn and moved to Missouri; evidently, Sally was about 19 or 20 years old when the 1850 census was taken and had already married and moved away from home. WILLIAM S. (my g.g.grandfather) was 64-65 years old when he married the 2nd time, MARTHA JANE EVANS (21 years) and they had 7 children, the last one born in 1899. WILLIAM S. died in 1906 and his 2nd wife in 1942. WILLIAM SMITH had a daughter, DELLA ARNOLD, who is 81 years old and a retired school teacher. W. born 1880 married FREDA HUGHES * Reportedly a descendent of WOOD ARNOLD through DICY who married IVY KEARNS says the Family Bible is in possession of a member of the family in North Carolina. I hope to see this in 1971 (Ruth B. Moody) -59- (Study of Randolph Co. ARNOLDS, cont’d) Notes from Swem’s Index – found several years ago – and periodical not listed: Wm. Kendrick. Is this not confused with above Martha Kendrick or vice versa? It would be a great help to know what JOHN ARNOLD SR’s wife MARTHA maiden name was. Family of JAMES FIELDING ARNOLD (of Randolph County, NC?) as given in letter from MABRY WARD ARNOLD BATSON (Mrs. E. O.), Notasulga, Alabama, 1962 to Ruth B. Moody. “JAMES FIELDING ARNOLD served in the American Revolution as a Major in the North Carolina Militia throughout the war.” (See Biographical Souvenir of Georgia and Florida by his son, JESSE HENRY ARNOLD) (Publication: “Recollections of the Arnold Family: Ancestors and children of Moses Arnold” by JESSE ARNOLD, Ft. They had WALTER E. ARNOLD (1860-1919) who was the father of MAYBRY WARD ARNOLD BATSON. -60- (Study of Randolph Co. ARNOLDs, Cont’d) Walton County, Georgia Marriages ELIJAH B. ARNOLD married SUSANNAH WARE 1829 JESSE H. ARNOLD married MARY JACKSON 1831 A WILLIAM ARNOLD married Mrs. ELIZ. AYCOCK 1825, also listed in Walton County 1821 lottery as WILLIE Arnold. (Could this have been JAS. W. ARNOLD?) Note: Mrs. Batson said AUGUSTUS ARNOLD died unmarried however in the 1880 Census of Henry County, Georgia (adjoining Coweta wherein Mrs. Batson’s grandfather ELIJAH B. ARNOLD lived) there is an AUGUSTUS ARNOLD 49, wife ELIZABETH 44, sons MILTON 10 and EMMETT 8. Mrs. Batson also said the only cousin she remembered meeting was EMMETT ARNOLD. Note also that in Randolph County, NC Deed records – JOHN ARNOLD sold land 1787 to Wm. Bailey. “Col. FIELDS W. ARNOLD of Morgan County, Georgia, married Miss ANNA MARIA GHOLSOM Feb. 26, 1827 at home of John Gholson, Pendleton District, SC” (as shown above, he married ELIZABETH BRIMBERLY of Morgan County in 1832). The first marriage notation was from newspaper files. Morgan County 1850 Census has FIELDS W. ARNOLD 47, born North Carolina, LAURA 12; IRENE 10. Thus he must have again been a widower. Family of JAMES ARNOLD, Private and Corporal in the Continental Army (VA?). ELIZABETH STROUD married Augusta County, Virginia 1794. Children: SOLOMON born 1795 married ELEANOR J. Spiller, Tulsa, Oklahoma, April 16, 1937 by Mrs. Epartha R. (Heard) Kreutner who stated “my great grandfather (JAMES ARNOLD) was given a grant of land in Wilkes County for his services in the Revolutionary War.” (Mrs. Kreutner was living at time the letter was written in Montgomery, Alabama). -61- (Study of Randolph Co. ARNOLDS Cont’d) (Family of JAMES ARNOLD) Notes from cards on Revolutionary soldiers in files of National Archives: “SOLOMON ARNOLD, Moore County, NC (at time of pension?) born Virginia 1758, formerly of Warren County, NC, until 1816. He married MARY GURLEY, Moore County, NC 1784. He died Luxenberg (Lunenburg, Virginia?) County 1844” SOLOMON ARNOLD, wife JENNETT, Pvt. Capt. Pope’s Co. GA Militia. Residence 1850 Wilkinson County, Georgia Residence of widow 1878 Randolph County, Alabama They were married 1827 Wilkinson County, Georgia Miscellaneous ARNOLD notes: FRANCIS ARNOLD of Clarke County, Georgia, married ELIZABETH ARENDALE, same county, March 19, 1806. (This could not be the FRANCIS ARNOLD listed in Randolph County, NC, 1790 Census as that FRANCIS ARNOLD was then married, head of household and had children.) CHESLEY ARNOLD: Obituary in “Southern Christian Advocate,” May 25, 1853, says he was born Cumberland County, Virginia, 1779, settled near Lexington, Georgia, 1805, died Oglethorpe County 1853. The 1840 Oglethorpe County Census has the following ARNOLDS listed: ELIAS, NANCY, CHESLEY, WM, PARKS, SUSAN, ELIZ., JOHN F. (all were heads of households). Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Wills (AFAS Vol. I, p. 98) has will of JEREMIAH ARNOLD 1809, gives money for 3 years schooling for CHESLEY ARNOLD. The JEREMIAH ARNOLD of Randolph County, NC 1790 Census does not show any children nor are there any later records (deeds, etc.) in his name; thus, he could have moved back to his home in Virginia. “ELIZABETH ANN ARNOLD, niece of Rev. WM. ARNOLD, Methodist minister, married NATHANIEL GARNETT COLQUITT” (From Upson County, Georgia History) Note: The Oglethorpe Co. GA 1800 Census has in one household: JOHN ARNOLD 2 males (25-45); 1 m. 50-60 and 1 m 70-80 Could this possibly be the 3 generations of JOHN ARNOLDS who moved to Georgia? There were three JOHN ARNOLDS of similar ages living in Hancock Co. in the 1820s Notes on CHESLEY ARNOLD NATHANIEL GARNETT COLQUITT born 1816, Oglethorpe, Georgia, died 1876, Columbia County, Arkansas, where he is buried. Married ELIZABETH JANE ARNOLD (daughter of CHESLEY ARNOLD and SUSANNAH ANDREWS) born 1818 Oglethorpe County, Georgia, died 1888. -62- (Study of Randolph Co. ARNOLDS Cont’d) (Notes on CHESLEY ARNOLD) The above data links ELIZABETH ARNOLD COLQUITT to my grandfather, Rev. WM. ARNOLD through his brother, CHESLEY ARNOLD of Cumberland County, Virginia (at birth). There were MOSES and FRANCES ARNOLD on the Cumberland County tax list 1784. The will of THOMAS ARNOLD, Oglethorpe County 1793 shows three sons, JOHN, WILLIAM, THOS. JR. and six daughters and has as a witness, MOSES ARNOLD. Executors are the three sons and ZEPHANIAH L. ARNOLD. A MOSES ARNOLD, 1793 Wilkes County Tax Digest. He inherited from WM. ARNOLD, SR. 1810. (This is piercingly interesting but hard to unravel.) CLEMENT ARNOLD It is very easy to believe that CLEMENT ARNOLD, along with WHITLOCK ARNOLD, was a son of JOHN ARNOLD of Randolph County, North Carolina, married and out of JOHN ARNOLD’S family in 1790 Census. This is deducted from the types and many deeds recorded there. (See Randolph County deeds). Furthermore, one of Rev. WM. ARNOLD’S (son of above JOHN ARNOLD) sons, THOS. T. ARNOLD had a son named CLEMENT. Later in 1870 CLEMENT ARNOLD is head of a household in Gordon County (adjoining Floyd County where many of the family moved) with his mother, MARY ARNOLD, living there, age 76. Miscellaneous ARNOLDS: Another pertinent record is a deed from WHITLOCK ARNOLD of Randolph County, North Carolina, to WM. Congratulations! The editor has lost the following ARNOLD relatives: Machelle Proffitt Maggard, daughter of JACQUELINE SHIRLEY ARNOLD and JAMES PROFFITT, died 1 April 1975. She was buried at the White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, Michigan. Machelle was the editor’s niece. Mrs. GLADYS ARNOLD MINTER, lost her son, Doyle Minter, on 10 January 1975 of a heart attack. Doyle Minter was the Editor’s first cousin. We offer condolences to both families. Your editor visited four days with Ann Hennings in Falls Church, VA, this past July. We spent the time sorting and filing ARNOLD records and accessing where our directions must focus. In between work sessions, we went sightseeing in the DC area and did research at the DAR Library. The DAR Library is presently closed for repairs but one can still use the stacks and the microfilm records of members’ applications. The card catalogue is off-limits until the roof can be fixed. Mrs. Ann C. Long, 4101 West 7th Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76107 has four volumes of Cemetery Records of Kentucky and will research any name for self- addressed, stamped envelope only. Thank you Mrs. Long. Send in your notice of births, deaths, and marriages and other news items to be included in this column. -67- Members of THE ARNOLD FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF THE SOUTH As of 9 October 1975 Alexander, Mrs. J.
