63-05-08 Omaha Nebraska Territory May 8th 1866 to A & E Damrell from L Canterbury Dear Father & Mother I sit down at the presant time to write you a few lines and first I will say, that we have got along vary well on our journey so far, and yet we have been made to mourne. Tonly(?) Cynthann's babe died when within 15 miles of the Bluffs. We lay by 1/2 day made a coffin a buried it. it had been sick several days. There was a doctor traveling with us, who attended on the child, complaint inflamation of the Lungs. Nortons overtook us just one week after we started. The old man has been vary sick. We had to lay by with him one day. He is better now. is able to sit up. had a Doctor to see him. two of our children has had the chicken pox on the road. was quite sick, is better now. We got into Bluff City early yesterday morning. bought some supplys & then came on to the Ferry a distance of 4 miles and after staying there till Evening we got over the River but came near having to fight for our rights but we was determined to have our turn and not be trifled with. We are now in camp one mile up the River from Omaha. will stay here till morning, wash & etc and then start on our Journey. Grass is tollerable good when it is not graized to much. We bought our flower at $2.50 per hundred, paid from 20 to 30 cts for corn. Have not yet found P. Johnson or Henderson. Birds, J Hunsaker & etc etc crossed the River the day before we did. They have gone on. I saw Tom Bird in Bluff City yesterday. Now as I have several letters to write you must excuse this short note. Tell Elisha to write to me at Fort Larime so that I may get it on my way. This letter is intended for Elisha's folks as well as yourselves. I will write again from F. Larime. The roads are thronged with Emmigrants too many for convianance. We will travel slow, and take care of our teams, we get lots of milk to do us and to spare. This leaves us all well except colds, we have 15 wagons in our company. Take care of yourselves as best you can amid these troubles. We feel like that we are in a new atmosphere. We enjoy ourselves fine. the roads are excellent. No more at presant but Remains your son & daughter til Death. Farewell. L. F. Canterbury
