63-06-07 June 7th 1863 Dear Grand Mother & grandfather (A & E Damrell) from Eliza E. Norton (parents are L.F. & R. Canterbury) I thought I would write you a few lines to let you know how I was geting a long. Well we have has finiel(?) roads sins we stared we had a storm last wednesday night. We had to stake our wagon down to the ground. We are now a bout 50 miles from Fort laramy. we have not seen vary many indians yet but dont know how soon we may. seen several herds of buffalos and antelopes. I see a train agoing up the south side of the river now while I am writing. There twenty two wagons in our train. there was thirty but they fell out and left us. Ben Damerell and Shanhigh Brown has gone in a train that is going to Oregon. We had one accident in our train. our wagon runs over Persey Hulel but did not brake his leg. in a nother train below us one night the cattle tuck a stampead and run over a woman. we had one stampead. all of the horses got scared at some indians one evening and run about 6 miles before they stoped. June 10th (same paper) We have soped to wash and rest for the last three or four days. We have had some vary heard storms. it raind and hailed last sunday. the hail was as big as hen eggs. the children have got the houpen cough. I want you all to remember us. excuse any bad pelling and writeing as I have not got a good place sit. Tell Lizzie Damerell that I will write to her when I get to salt lake. we will get to fort laramy day after morrow. milch cows is worth from $25 to $70 dollar a head. I want you to write as soon as you get this so I can get it at Salt lake. Tell Mary beall I will write to her. I will bring my letter to a close. Eliza E. Norton
