67-11-24 1867 Nov 24 Vacaville Solano County California to A & E DAMRELL from L F Canterbury Dear Father & Mother I seat myself once more to write to you. You no doubt think it vary strange that I have not written to you before now. Now let me explain the matter, when I Received your Last Letter I was fixing with all my might for Cal but still thout I would get time to write but didnot. well after I got here, I still wanted to get settled, so as to tell you where to write to. and then when we got into a house we had so much to do I could not write, and so altogether I have delayed too long, please excuse. well it has been a Little over 6 weekes Since we Left Oregon, we was 3 weeks & one day on the road, had a very plesant trip except 1/2 days rain & cold frosty nights, in the mountains we staid at John Nortons one week but could rent no place and so came on down here 20 miles further in the Same neighbourhood where we Lived when here before. We have rented a place of 140 Acres. we aim to get it all in grain, some of it will do to volunteer. The balance we will plow. we have been here 2 weeks, have got up most of our winter would. I have bought 3 Tons of wheat. 1/2 ton of Barley, also our cow for which I paid 60 dollars, beside other things in the house & have bought 2 plows and the boys have plowd Ten or Twelve Acres. ain't that pretty good for two weeks. Now grand Ma you are aware that I neaver Liked the winters of Oregon & so determined to try Cal once more and now we are here and I am glad of it. I tink we have a good prospect before us, all I ask is good healt, and the Divine favor and I'll go under to the "Bed Rock" I want to widen out until I can put in 500 Acres of wheat in one year. One man here is putting in 1600 Acres this season. That Same man cleared Ten Thousand dollars Last Year on his grain. We are between 2 1/2 and 3 miles of Vacaville. will send our children there next summer to the College. Now Grand Ma you wanted to know why I did not sign Amors name to _______of Last Letter. You thin thought perhaps she might be dead and I was keeping the fact from you. not a bit of it, it was only an oversight in me, not intentional. Amor's health has been better the Last Summer then any previous summer since we came to the coast she is not vary well just at this time. I Received a Letter from Cynthia A. a short time before we Left Oregon. The way I understood her Letter Ben D, Samp Hunsaker & Them were all on their way to Washington T(erritory). The Letter was mailed at the Dalls(?). Their Post Office is Fort Symco W. T. Now Grandma I write this on a board on my Lap and am getting tired humped over so please excuse this short scrap. More next time. Our weather hen now Looks Like spring. we have had some good rains and everything growing fine. Direct your Letters to Vacaville, Solano County, California. The Family is all well also Johns a few days since. Oh the flys & musskutios bothers me so. Our Respects to our friends there. No more at present. Farewell. L. F. Canterbury/R Canterbury
