75-02-27 Colfax Whitman County W. T. Feb the 27th 1875 Henry & Abba Hunt and Children possibly from Cynthia Damrell Henderson Very Dear Brother & Sister your welcome letter came safe to hand nearly two weeks since. it found us moderately well, but rather low spirited. Oh it ririves us up so much to hear from our near and dear Friends so far away and learn how they are getting along and so on. we have had one of the Hardest winters here every any of us Experienced in our lives before. Those that have no feed for their cattle are out of Luck. Robert has anough feed to take these cattle through besides he has let other people have Hay. I will tell you it freeze chickens to death. They said if it had been a few degrees colder it would of froze cattle to death, some men freeze their feet and fingers and ears and nose. you may know it was severe. Snow drifted very deep. where it did not drift it was 12 or 13 inches I would suppose. There is a good many cattle dying. Some go on the ice to drink and they would go under and drowned. We heard of a snow slide killing 9 Head on the Palouse 20 or 25 miles from here. It has been a hard winter every place we can hear from. We expect to hear of you having a serious winter also. I am thankful to tell you that most has been melting off fast for the last 2 or 3 days. if it wouldnt freeze of Nights it would soon be gone. Then is the time for cattle to get in miny places and a many one die, to what are dying now; Robert and the Boys had a rough time finding and feeding stock. the most of them are turned out to grass, the hills are mostly bear, the grass is not much strength in it. They will feed the weakest ones some time yet. there is 6 young calves. Robert is complaning a good deal his lungs hurts him. he spit up some blood today for the first in a long time. I feel very much discouraged at times. It is quite lonely here. I and Hannah gets to gather and talks over old times. 5 women is all I have seen this winter. They have all been to see us. Hannah is one of them. There has been several men, here every Night or two men hunting cattle ______. to stop over Night So sure a nough I have no time for mischief. Oh yes we have not got those papers yet. They say they are to Colfax. We will get them next mail. The children are very anctious to get them. They think it a great treat to get those nice Papers to read. They are nice presents also. I feel glad for them. Sister I hardly know what to write that would interest you. We have no late news. times are very dull here. Times must be pretty good where you are, so many weddings going off. Tell Enoch I would love to been to his wedding. It seems funny to hear of him being married. The last time I seen him he was a little boy. It dont take little boy and girls long to get to be men and women now days. Ben has a Daughter nearly grown Laura I have an Idia she is taller then her mother, She makes me think of you so much. Henry you must be sure and write next time. You have no idia how it revivies us to hear from you and all of the Brothers and Sisters. Abba has been more punctual in answering our letters than any of the Brothers or Sisters. If we fail to get her letters we fail to get any information from Henry believe it is from Cyntha Henderson
